Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:greg lestrade, kate tesla

Who: Kate Freelander and G. Lestrade.
What: Kate is occasionally nice.
Where: Their flat.
When: Saturday, evening.
Rating: TBD.
Status: In progress.

It was weird living with one person, after so long in the Sanctuary, and Kate realized she actually missed having everyone driving her crazy. Lestrade even kept to himself, and she was seriously fighting the urge to go and ask Tesla if he wanted a roomie. He, at least, would be sufficiently annoying. If she was lucky, Will or Hank would show up soon and life would return to its crazy norm. Ashley provided entertainment, but Kate still missed her friends. She'd even take Big Guy at this point.

Still, G. wasn't bad...even if he wouldn't tell her his name. He was smart and he called her on her bullshit. It was kind of fun. He also worked a lot, and Kate kind of found herself worrying about him sometimes. She wasn't sure he took good care of himself, and she cursed Magnus for making it so she cared about things like that. Damn bleeding hearts, ruining her reputation. But she found herself sometimes doing stupid things like suggesting he get more sleep or, tonight's example, cooking food for more than one person. It wasn't a widely known fact that she could cook, mostly because she seriously didn't want to deal with what Will or Hank would say about that one, but she could. Anyway, it wasn't like she'd cooked for him, and she'd kick anyone's ass who suggested she had. She just cooked because she wanted to, and made enough for more than just her.

So when G. finally dragged himself back from what ever detectivey thing he was doing, there was real-people food. "So, you should eat," Kate said casually, as if this wasn't weird at all. "If you die, people will blame me and then I'll have to kick your ass. Besides, I was bored and this seemed safer than getting up to illegal shenanigans." Just let him say something smartass. She would so hurt him.

"Well, it's certainly legal."

Lestrade eyed her then the food with a bit of a smile. So under the tough girl exterior was a nice girl. To many it wouldn't seem like a big deal, but after working with Sherlock Holmes for five years, he knew that when subtle things showed, it meant that was more of who they were. He wouldn't call her on it. Hell, he never called Sherlock on it either.

"If you did kill me, it wouldn't be the police department you'd have to worry about."

"Are those keen observation skills what got you where you are today?"

Kate rolled her eyes as she fixed two plates and set one on the counter for him. She glanced over, feeling a vague sense of annoyance that she just managed to suppress. Whatever he might think, this didn't mean she had gone soft. She just didn't want food to go to waste. It didn't mean she liked him or anything.

"Oh, Sherlock would have more of a chance of catching me," she agreed. "But he actually likes me. And he's smart enough, he'd work out it wasn't intentional."

"No. That's where they got Sherlock." Lestrade said as he moved further into the flat, leaning down to inspect the food. He was just damn good at his job. He was brilliant, but apparently, not brilliant enough.

"And you're assuming he'd care enough to keep you out of prison."

Kate laughed and shook her head, poking at her own food. "So, how long have you guys known each other?" she asked, curious about the detectives. There were some of the more interesting people she had met in her time here, and they made her miss Will and Hank.

"Oh, it has nothing to do with me," she said. "He cares about being right and proving stupid people wrong. Helping me out would do both."

"Five years back home." Lestrade said. He pulled up the fork nearby and suck it in the food, turning it around on the fork. "He helps us out for free because he knows we need him. Bit pathetic, isn't it? One bloke who walks in off the street corner is smarter than the entire bloody Scotland Yard."

He gave a shrug though. "Helps you out how, Freelander?"

"That's a pretty long time," Kate said, though maybe it only was to her. After all, she'd never spent long in one place before the Sanctuary, and her work had necessitated not letting anyone close. "It could be worse," she pointed out. "He could really be just a guy off the street. But he's not. He's an annoying genius who is way too clever for anyone's own good and has no problem letting people know it. And he's good."

She shrugged. "We're talking about the hypothetical situation where you work yourself to death and I get blamed," she reminded him. "If I'm gonna get arrested, I'd rather have it be for something I did.
