Who: Marian and Robin
What: Early birthday present since the zombie!fail xD
Where: There apartment
When: Late Morning.
Rating: TBD.
Status: In progress

When Marian had woken to something she had never really expected on the network, she would probably be laughed at if people found out her main worry was Robin's birthday on Thursday. But she had a reason. His little extra presents were tucked away in her wardrobe but the main present was still waiting to be picked up. She had intended on doing so when Robin was at work during the day but she knew this places and if past events were anything to go by, this would get worse the longer it happened. And she wasn't leaving this present any longer than she had to. She glanced at Robin's sleeping form before slipping out of bed and getting ready. If he knew what was going on, well, he wouldn't let her go. Writing a note to say she was going to spend a couple of hours with the horses, which she also intended on doing just to ensure they stayed safe, she left the house.

It didn't seem too bad just yet, and Marian managed to get to the stables with ease. After making sure the horses were safely put away with enough food and water to last a week at most, she headed to the store where she had found had puppies. It didn't take her long to find one that she could not say no to. She was lucky that the store was close to her home, and was back at the door within ten minutes, cardboard box with a sleeping puppy inside. When she walked in, she smiled at Robin before her smile fell when she saw him with the PDA. No doubt he was reading just what was going on out there.

"...Morning."

Robin had grown used to waking before Marian, so it was still something of a surprise on those occasions when he woke to find she was not beside him. It happened more frequently these days, now that she had a job, even though her hours were more of her own choosing than his were. He had the day off today, so it was not really all that odd to wake and find her gone. It wasn't until he'd had a shower and dressed that he picked up his PDA, and found the messages describing the latest strange thing happening. All thoughts of breakfast were forgotten in an instant. Marian was out there, alone, whilst these...things, these zombies, were out there too.

He was just closing the message he'd been reading when the front door opened. The majority of his anxiety fled in that second when he saw her standing there, not paying attention to the box she carried in her arms. All he could think was that she was safe, and in a few steps he was in front of her, disregarding what she was holding as he wrapped his arms around her neck in a hug before stepping back.

"Are you okay?" She would lie about it anyway, if she was not, but he had to ask.

Marian's free arm wrapped around his waist when he pulled her into a hug, nuzzling his neck before dropping it to her side when he pulled away. She felt guilty leaving him to read about what was going on whilst she wasn't here, but she was determined to make sure he still had his present. Even if he would probably think it a stupid reason for her to leave this house.

"I'm fine. Nothing happened, don't worry."

She gave him a reassuring smile before kissing his cheek. Squeezing his hand, she nodded to the couch. She wasn't exactly going to wait any longer to give the pup to him even if he was sleeping at the moment.

"Sit down?"

He was reassured greatly by the fact that she returned his hold. If she was hiding something, she would not readily stay so close to him. Regardless, as she moved back his eyes searched her face. He could not help but worry, despite her telling him not to.

"You know I can not help but worry," he said plainly. Just as she would worry about him. "Promise me you will not go out again alone, until this is over."

He returned the squeeze to his hand by doing the same to hers, his fingers tightening around hers. Her question was a little surprising, and drew his eyes to the box under her arm. Obviously, it had something to do with what she'd gone out for. But what, he couldn't guess.

There was no reason not to comply with her request, and he moved around to the couch, sitting down.

"I know you can't, just as I can't help but worry when you do something. But fine. I promise I wont go out alone again."

She watched him sit down before following him and placing the box down gently on the floor. Sitting next to him, she found herself nuzzling his neck before pressing a gentle kiss against his skin.

"I left because it's your birthday in two days. And nothing was going to stop me from getting the present I really wanted to get you. I just...hope you like it."

With that said, she opened the box and lifted the tiny, now slightly awake, puppy. Grinning hopefully at Robin, she cradled the pup in her two hands.

"This is Toby."

"Thank you," he said with sincerity. It wasn't that he thought she would disagree, just that she could be exceptionally wilful and stubborn when she wanted to be. Like this morning. She had known what was happening and had simply gone out anyway, for his birthday.

"Marian, you didn't need to do that." He would just as soon have waited than have her put herself at risk, and he knew she knew that.

He didn't bother saying that though, because she did know, because it was done now, and because she had made her promise. He watched curiously as she opened the box, and she took from it what it took him a moment to realise was a puppy. So small, it fit in her two hands.

"Marian," he said, with a small laugh, more out of surprise than anything else. At her hopeful look, he smiled, not wanting her to feel disheartened. Reaching over, he ran two fingers gently over the pup's tiny head. It was so small he doubted it could even walk.

"I know but I wanted to," she said with a smile.

But then he was laughing and she was worried that he wasn't laughing in a good way. As if it was a stupid thing, a stupid idea that she should get a puppy for him. She just thought it might be something he would like. After all, he had mentioned being bored and if he had a puppy to play with and help look after surely that was something to tackle boredom.

But then he was petting it gently and she felt the hope come back. Maybe he did like him. And Marian wasn't going to take him back no matter what.

"Do you like him? I saw him and I couldn't choose any other puppy."

"I do," he answered her immediately, hearing the uncertainty in her tone. "He is very small," he said, to explain his surprised laugh, which he assumed had caused her doubt. "I can see why you couldn't choose another."

There was something endearing about its tiny face, the way its eyes were barely open. It was just that he was considering that that the tiny pup, Toby, she'd said his name was, yawned, its eyes closing, his tiny mouth opening, and he couldn't help but smile at the sight. Reaching over, he picked up the tiny animal from Marian's hands. He was so small he could just about fit in one of Robin's.

"What made you think to get me a dog?"

"Well he's not that old."

She grinned when he took Toby from her, her heart melting slightly when she saw just how small the puppy was in Robin's hold. Yes, even if this was a present for him she had a feeling it would be something good for her. Purely because Robin looked lovely with the sleepy puppy curled up in his hand.

"Well you said you were bored and needed something new. I thought it would be nice if you had a puppy because it's something different to do."

As she spoke, the puppy stretched slightly and nuzzled against Robin's hand. Marian couldn't help but make a noise of adoration as she reached out to run her finger down Toby's back.

"Is he even old enough to be away from his mother?" He asked at her comment about his age. He seemed small enough that he wasn't. He ran two fingers gently over its small head again. Anything else felt as though it would squash him.

He smiled, looking up at her when she explained her reasoning behind getting him a puppy. "He is not very exciting just now," he said teasingly. Leaning over, he kissed her cheek. "Thank you."

At the noise she made he looked down at him, laughing quietly at the little stretch. "Does he have something to sleep in?" He nodded toward the box.

"His mother died. He actually has to be fed with milk through a bottle just now. The people at the store were doing that."

They had provided her with enough of the things she would need for the sake of the puppies health that would last a few weeks. She nudged him when he claimed he wasn't exciting but gave a smile at the kiss.

"You're welcome. And he's tired, and only little. Give him some time."

She didn't have a proper bed just yet, and didn't have enough hands to carry all the supplies she would need. "I just need a lot of newspaper and blankets, or old shirts and I'll make a bed up for him."

"Another reason why you chose him. I guess that means one of us will have to stay with him?" He doubted he could take a little puppy to work, but Marian could take him to the stables he was sure, if it became necessary.

"I know he is," he replied. "I was only teasing. I'm betting soon enough we'll miss him being this quiet."

He nodded, using his free hand to pull the box closer and look in it to see what was there. "We have some blankets we don't use, in the cupboard in the other room. They'll be fine."

"At least for a few weeks until he's bigger and can feed on his own. But I can take him to work with me, that's not a problem."

Well, whenever they could go back to work. She would maybe see if Robin would come with her one day to check on the horses, knowing that he might be a little more willing to let her go if he went with her. She smiled a little at his bet, resting her head on his shoulder.

"Just now he seems to small to do much. His legs aren't as strong as they will be but he can still walk a little."

Or so she had been told by the woman she talked to. When he moved to get the box, she lifted her head to make it easier, reaching out to run her fingers over Toby again.

"Well that's something. I knew we would have one thing at least to help him stay comfortable."

He'd assumed that would be the case. Though who knew when that would be anyway. There was no way she was going off to work when the zombies were around. Not knowing what they could do. Though having read some of the messages people had left, he might go in to work to get a gun for himself, and Marian. He had his bow, but he doubted its usefulness against these things. Or more accurately, a gun would bring about a more certain result. And he had told Marian not to go out alone. He was under no illusions that she would stay inside during this. Knowing she had a way to defend herself would be a comfort. He knew she could look after herself well enough.

He looked down at Toby when she said he could walk a little. He thought that would be an amusing sight. "It was an excellent idea, for a present." He pressed a kiss to the top of her head before she pulled her head away again.

"I'm glad you think so."

She once again vocally showed how much she adored the puppy when it nuzzled more against Robin. Cooing, she leaned in to press a kiss to Toby's head. She couldn't believe how such a simple thing could command her attention so easily.

"He's lovely isn't he!"

Yes, this was for Robin. But that didn't mean she couldn't find enjoyment in the little animal.

He laughed quietly when she leaned down and kissed Toby's head. "Yes, he is," he agreed. "And it is good to see you will get as much enjoyment from his presence."

He lifted the puppy higher so he could look at its little face. "She might seem a little scary sometimes, but I promise she is nice," he said to him with a perfectly straight face before lowering his hands to his lap again.

As if he hadn't said anything, he continued. "When he is big enough, we can take him to the park."

"I can't help but get enjoyment from his presence. He's absolutely adorable." She was sure her voice came closer to the tone used when talking to a baby but she didn't comment on it, hoping he wouldn't.

Marian poked his stomach when he talked to the puppy, even if it was the most adorable thing she had ever seen. She kind of wanted him to keep talking but then he was lowering the tiny puppy to his lap and talking as if he hadn't been talking to Toby a moment ago.

"I am not scary. And of course, more space for him to run."

"You are right about that. I don't imagine anyone could look at him and not like him." He ran his thumb over the soft fur of the puppy's head again, as he spoke. It might have been because he was so small that made him so likeable. Then again, maybe it was the way Marian was speaking, as if she were talking to a child. He couldn't help but think rather wistfully about her speaking that way to their own child, some day.

He grinned innocently at her when she poked him. "You can be."

"Exactly."

She smiled and watched as Robin again ran his thumb over the puppy's head. Nuzzling closer, she smiled as she looked up at him, one of her fingers stroking Toby's back gently. She just wanted to pick him up and cuddle him but he was Robin's present. He needed some time to bond with the small dog.

"I am never scary."

Her tone was far too soft to make it seem like she was annoyed or anything at him, and she couldn't even bring herself to feign anger. She was far too happy and relaxed.

He watched Marian surreptitiously as she petted Toby. The look on her face was incredible. She was always beautiful, and always would be, but the adoration in her eyes lit her whole face up.

"Would you like to hold him?" He asked. "If you admit that you can be scary, you may," he added with a teasing smirk. He slipped the hand not holding Toby around her back as she moved closer.

"That's bribery my love. That's not nice."

Her smile was so gentle and even when she was teasing, she felt too content to fully show that she was teasing. But he knew her well enough to know if she was being serious or not.

"He's mean to me, isn't he Toby?" she said quietly as she scratched a finger behind his ear and cuddled up more as Robin wrapped his arm around her.

"You only dislike it because you do not want to have to admit the truth."

He laughed softly when she spoke to Toby, and scratched behind his ear. "That won't work. He is already on my side. And he thinks that I am very nice."

Marian becoming so gently affectionate was another benefit of her giving him a puppy as a present. Apparently, it brought out that side of her. And he was in no way complaining about that.

"It is not the truth."

She rolled her eyes playfully before turning her head to press a kiss to his neck. She loved how he could be when they were curled up, even if it was just the way he held her. She never felt safer.

"He is also close to sleep, he's unaware."

"Whatever you say," he replied in a placating tone.

He smiled down at her when she kissed his neck. He would never tire of these moments with her. Of course, outside there might have been a large number of zombies who wanted to do Lord knows what to them, but they were here together, safe inside. Boredom would set in soon enough, and he might even consider going outside at some point. But for now, he was content to stay here with his wife.

"So he is," he laughed, looking down at Toby.

"Do you think I should set up the blankets for him? Or is he fine there?"

She really just wanted to make sure the puppy was as well looked after as possible. She had read the odd horror story about ways some people treated animals and, although she knew she would never be capable of that, it made her more determined that ever to ensure this puppy was happy and kept healthy.

"Maybe even set some blankets up on your lap if you'd rather not let him go just yet? It's up to you."

The consideration in Marian's tone was unsurprising. Though at home, and previously here, it had been horses, she certainly had a way with animals that was unmatched by most.

"It's probably not a good idea to have him become used to sleeping on my lap. We'll end up with a puppy sharing our bed," he laughed quietly, not wanting to wake him. "He will be all right in a bed on his own."

"We don't want that."

She smiled and nodded before giving him a gentle kiss. Pushing herself up to stand, she excused herself and went to the other room to get a few of the spare blankets they had. When she came back, she knelt onto the floor and prepared the little box she had. When things were safer she would get more supplies and a proper bed, but for now the cardboard box would do.

"There," she said when the bed was ready. "That should be better for him."

He sat, eyes on the tiny puppy in his hands as Marian went to get the blankets. As a gift, it had been successful in more than one way. It was not only incredibly thoughtful, but had been completely surprising as well. That was not something that happened often between them. They knew each other too well for that.

Watching as she made up the makeshift bed in the cardboard box, he lowered Toby in to it once she was done, laughing at how small he looked amongst the blankets.

She smiled at Robin's laugh as Toby got settled within the blankets before moving to she was sitting closer to him. Her eyes couldn't once leave the puppy, there was something so hypnotic about watching the small aanimal lying there, falling asleep. He was so adorable and even if he was Robin's pet, she would still find herself wanting to do as much as possible with the small thing.

"So are you honestly happy? Tell me the truth."

She wanted to know if he really did appreciate the present or if he was just saying that so she wasn't put out.
