Entry tags:obi-wan kenobi, yvaine

WHO: Yvaine and Obi-Wan Kenobi
WHAT: He's not exactly a knight in shining armor, but he's close enough.
WHEN: Early evening
WHERE: A side street by one of the parks
RATING: PG
STATUS: Closed; in progress

It hadn't occurred to Yvaine to seek out the housing that had been prepared for her. She was used to sleeping outdoors. More accurately she was used to sleeping in the sky, but in the time since she'd fallen she had grown accustomed to sleeping under trees. She might have been further away from from her sisters and her mother but at least she could see them and sense them.

So Yvaine kept to the schedule she preferred. She tucked herself away in a secluded hollow between a rock and a large tree during the day, letting the light block out the strange silence that filled the space between herself and the other stars. She slept for hours, unmolested and unnoticed. And when dusk fell she woke up and wandered the city. Somehow the robe she'd been wearing had been replaced with her familiar silvery dress when she'd arrived, and she suspected most people took her for a ghost or some other apparition.

The occasional person, however, gave her a second look. And one man gave her a third look, and saw the ostentatious jewel still hanging about her neck.

"Excuse me, you -" Yvaine struggled as he latched his hand around her wrist. "You get your bloody hands off me, I'm not going to be captured again!" She couldn't run with her leg still hurting.

Obi-Wan was another one who'd taken to wandering the city. After he'd met up with Jaina and they'd started exploring the area around the library, he'd continued to learn the layout of the place as he walked the streets. He had conducted a lightning-quick survey of the area at first, so that he wouldn't ever get lost, and now he had time to explore areas at his leisure.

Of course, he couldn't help being himself, so when he heard a woman shouting at someone, he listened to what was being said and then he was making his way towards them. They were only one block away, so it didn't take long for him to reach them. The man appeared to be wrestling with the young lady, attempting to grab at her necklace by the looks of things.

Obi-Wan walked towards them, even as he reached out with the Force and grabbed the man, slamming him up against the nearest wall. "You would be well advised to leave the lady alone," he said, not even bothering to replace the Force with his own arm. He just walked over and checked that the young woman wasn't injured before looking back round at the man. A quick hand gesture and "You're going to go home now," and the man was hurrying away from them even before he looked at the woman once more.

"Are you alright, ma'am?"

"Of course I'm not all right, I've just been attacked. And my leg's still broken and it hurts more now that he was trying to drag me off. And I'm a bit frightened, since you're using magic or something to throw people about." Yvaine frowned. That was more than she wanted to tell him. "Are you using some sort of truth spell on me?" Magic was clearly the most obvious answer. She hugged herself, more afraid than she'd been since she'd come here.

Belatedly, she realised she should at least pretend to be grateful, even if she was frightened. "Thank you for chasing him off."

Frowning, he looked closer at her with the Force, and sure enough, there was a still-healing fracture. Then her words sunk in a bit more and he looked up at her face. "Truth spell? Ma'am, I am not doing any sort of spell on you. Nor am I using magic, I assure you. I am a Jedi. I use the Force."

He nodded when she thanked him, sending a quick pulse of the Force towards her injury. It wouldn't heal her completely, but it would hopefully take the edge off of the pain and encourage the fracture to start knitting together. "Don't panic," he told her, referring to the sudden bloom of warmth around the injury that was the Force getting to work. "I'm trying to help your leg get better. Where do you live, ma'am? I'll help you to get back there."

"It certainly looks like magic," she said, still not comprehending. The warning not to panic didn't keep her from startling, trying to move away from the spreading heat in her leg. A futile gesture, as it turned out, and Yvaine settled for leaning against the wall. "And it feels like magic." Whatever force it happened to be wasn't all that different from the magic she'd seen worked for centuries.

"I don't live anywhere here. I've been staying in the park a few streets away, sleeping under one of the trees." Yvaine clamped her mouth shut with an audible click and narrowed her eyes. "Who are you? Why should I trust you? The last person who said they'd help me was trying to cut out my heart."

"I assure you, it is not magic. The Force is very natural. It surrounds every living creature, it penetrates us and binds us all together. I am simply able to work with the Force, where most others cannot. It is nothing to be afraid of." He spoke calmly and quietly, and he found himself remembering the last time he had creche duty with the younglin- oh.

Oh, the memory that followed was as terrible as seeing the actual recordings at the temple over again. He closed his eyes for a moment, and forced the grief down, then looked at the young woman.

"The park?" That was... odd. She was too well-dressed to be a homeless person, he thought, and was about to ask further questions when she started asking ones of him. "I am Obi-Wan Kenobi, and you should trust me because I am a Jedi Knight," because that much should have been obvious. "I promise I will not try to injure you in any way, Ma'am." Unless she tried to attack him, of course.

It still wasn't anything she'd heard of, but Yvaine didn't question him further. She carefully tested her leg by leaning a little more weight on it and winced slightly. But it wasn't nearly as bad as it had been before. The flicker of expression over his face didn't escape her, but she didn't want to ask. Especially given that they were still standing in an alleyway.

"Yes, the park. Is there somewhere else I should be staying, then?" If he tried to drag her off somewhere she was going to scream. Or lie down on the ground and make herself as heavy as possible. But he seemed to have at least somewhat honourable intentions. "What do you promise by?"

"If you arrived here via the library, then you have been allocated a room to sleep in. The communications device you were provided with should tell you where it is," he said, crossing his arms as he watched her. A few of the more graphic memories were trying to make him pay attention, but he focused on being in the here and now with the strange lady who was exhibiting a distinct lack of trust in him. No doubt he looked incredibly grumpy, but he really couldn't care less.

"What do I promise by? Ma'am, I am a Jedi," he repeated, since everyone knew that if a Jedi gave his word on something, then whatever had been promised would be done. He raised an eyebrow and then realised that she was entirely serious. "Fine. I swear on my lightsaber and on the Force itself that I will not try to harm you or injure you in any way."

"Oh." Yvaine fumbled in her dress for the strange little device. It wasn't something she knew how to use very well, though she'd puzzled out a bit of it. "Two-oh-two C," she read off it, then looked up at him. "I assume you have some idea of where these lodgings are."

His insistence that this strange word meant something was starting to frustrate her. But he was trying to help, she reminded herself, and he'd already saved her once for no reason. "I don't know what a Jedi is," she said reasonably. "I've never heard of one in my years watching the earth. But you seem to mean well, and you've helped me so far, so if you would help me find these lodgings I would be very much obliged to you." Not that she had any way to repay this kindness, even if she wanted to. But she'd sort that out later.

He blinked as she finished reading out her room allocation. "I know exactly where those lodgings are, yes. Apparently, you're living in the same apartment as I am. Separate rooms," he added quickly, in case she saw fit to protest, "but we share a common room and a kitchen."

"A Jedi Knight is someone who uses the Force in order to keep the peace and ensure that justice prevails throughout the Galaxy. And if you've only been watching this 'earth', that might explain why you don't know of the Jedi. I've never been on the earth, I'm from a different galaxy altogether, never mind a different planet," he explained, before stopping himself from stepping closer to her. "If your leg is too sore, I could help you walk," he offered.

Her eyes narrowed. "That is a startling coincidence," she said flatly. "But I suppose since I shouldn't be sleeping in the park that it will have to do." Why did fate continue to throw her together with strange men? Was it some peculiar destiny of hers, or just accursed bad luck continuing on from her fall?

Yvaine blew a bit of hair out of her face, considering him. "A different galaxy? Those are only stories. At least, from my perspective." She could see his hesitation and read the clarity of his intent on his face, and her leg did still ache, and she was suddenly very tired. "I... yes. That would be very kind of you. Thank you," she added. Humanity did so love its courtesies.

"Everyone's life is only a story, from someone else's perspective, ma'am," he said with the barest hint of a smile, then stepped closer to offer her his arm. He would have carried her, to spare her leg more pain, but he was fairly certain that if he even offered, she'd disagree. Loudly.

"Moralizing. Is this the sort of thing I'll have to put up with if we share a home?" She gave his arm a look before reluctantly taking it, leaning on him more than she wanted to. "Lead on, I suppose." At least he was helping her rather than dragging her over hill and dale without even offering assistance.
