WHO: Marian and Robin
WHAT: Bad Tiems v.2 (damn you plot)
WHEN: Middle of the night
WHERE: Their apartment
RATING: Not too High
STATUS: Complete

Marian stirred awake, turning onto her back and instantly feeling the warmth of another body near her. Smiling, she looked at Robin for a moment before pushing herself out of bed. She had woken up with her throat feeling exteremely dry and she had forgotten to put water next to her before sleeping to so she had no other choice. Making sure he still had the covers over him, she slipped her feet into the slippers she kept close by and pulled on her dressing gown. She had felt the chill the moment she left the bed and didn't really want to get cold.

Padding out of the bedroom, she shut the door quietly before switching the light on. Blinking a few times, it took her a moment to adjust to the lighting in the room before she moved to the kitchen. But something was there that she had not seen before she slept. Barely glancing at it, she walked to get a glass and filled it with water before moving to the table. Picking up the papers, her curiousity getting the better of her, and her hold on the glass loosened as it fell to the floor. She felt sick as the word 'divorce' stood out.

He was only slightly aware of her leaving the bed, the movement rousing him from a deeper sleep. Hearing her leaving the room, he rolled over on to his back, assuming she was going to get a drink, as she'd done plenty of times in the past. It was just as he was drifting off again that the sound of a glass shattering jerked him back to full wakefulness, sitting upright. Leaving the bed, he pulled on a t-shirt against the slight chill in the air, moving down the hall to the kitchen.

Entering the room quietly, it took his eyes a moment to adjust to the light as he stepped up behind her. "Marian?" He asked, glancing over her shoulder, trying to see if she was okay. It was then that he saw what she was holding, and he felt as though he'd been punched in the stomach.

"You..." He didn't even know what to say. She wanted a divorce?

She vaguely heard the bedroom door open but then Robin was behind her and she tensed. He was going to act so casual about this, wasn't he? When he trailled off she turned to face him before shoving the papers at his chest, not caring if he dropped them or not. Walking away from him, she folded her arms over her chest before turning to face him.

"I found them, yes, if that's what you were going to say. You weren't exactly discreet about it!"

It was better to be angry than to cry. Shaking her head, she looked away for a moment to collect her thoughts before looking to him again. There was no disguises the hurt in her eyes.

"Is this because of the talk about having a family? Because I'm sure there are better ways of dealing with that than a divorce."

"Found them?" He asked in disbelief, watching her as she turned back to face him. What the hell was she talking about? "You bring those home, then try and accuse me of wanting a divorce?"

He shook his head at her when she mentioned their talking about having a family. A conversation that had meant so much to him. As if he had done this to get out of it. "How could you say that, Marian?" He could read the anger in her face, but surely she could see how much what she was suggesting hurt him.

"I did not bring these home! Is this why you came home late?!"

How dare he suggest such a thing! She hadn't even been out, she had stayed in and done some cleaning and watched a film or two. Just relaxing since he wasn't going to be home until late. She took another deep breath, trying her best to keep the tears at bay. She could feel the pain from being hurt so badly run through her, worse than the stab wound from Guy.

"This is the second time since that conversation that you've said you didn't want to be married any more. Why can't you just be honest with me?"

"Then who did?!" He couldn't hold back his frustration. How could she say it wasn't her? What was he supposed to think? Looking away, he took a deep breath before facing her again, lowering his voice. "I know. Maybe someone else came in to the apartment, placed them neatly on the kitchen counter, and walked out again. That seems like a pretty reasonable explanation," he said sarcastically.

"What are you talking about, the second time? I am being honest! Why can't you?"

Her gaze turned harsh at his words, her fists clenching. How dare he blame her for this? She felt like saying she would be a lot more tactful about such a subject but had a feeling he would just take that as an admission of guilt in the mood he was in.

"Well I certainly did not put them there, and if you're claiming to not then perhaps someone did do that! Robin I swear I did not bring those in here, I won never want to end us."

She still couldn't believe he was denying this. She knew that she certainly didn't want a divorce. An alcoholic drink wouldn't go amiss, but not a divorce.

"You are honestly questioning that? The other day, when you seemingly had no recollection of asking for a divorce and I still had the messages where you said exactly as such. And I am being honest!"

"You never would, but you think I could?" He asked her, hurt. How could she suggest that he would want to end things with her? When they had so recently been suggesting moving forward, and starting a family.

"Yes, I am! I'm questioning it because you're suggesting that I'm lying to you!" Looking away again, he ran a hand through his hair.

"I never sent you any messages. Think about what you're saying Marian. Why would I do that? What reason could I possibly have?"

"Then how did they get here?!" she yelled, her hand waving in the general direction of the papers. "Because I promise I did not bring them here, I've not even had anything to do with outside this apartment today!"

She put her head in her hands and groaned before looking to him when he began speaking again. He had to be lying because she certainly wasn't. Unless someone somehow got into their apartment without them knowing and placed them there as a joke.

"Well I don't know, you tell me! Because you have! So tell me, what was so important that made you come home late last night?!"

"I don't know!" He yelled back, just as loud. He hated yelling at her like that, but she was doing her best to inspire it in him at the moment. "I'm supposed to believe you, when you seem so incapable of believing a word I'm saying?!"

Walking a way a few steps, he looked up at the ceiling, knowing he should calm down, because the way they were yelling at each other, they weren't going to get anywhere. Slowly, he turned back to face her again, his hands dropping to his sides.

"I swear to you Marian, I did not send those messages." When she asked about him coming home late, he frowned. He hadn't been late, had he? God, now she was making him doubt himself. "Work," he answered. That would be the only reason. "I was late because of work."

"Because I am telling the truth! And I know for a fact I did not bring those in here so who else could it be?!"

She watche him as he walked away, eyes on the ceiling. She should stop yelling, she knew that. It wouldn't help if this turned into a screaming match but it was better than crying. Anything was better than crying.

"So someone else just happened to have your phone?" She watched him as it took a moment for him to response, shaking her head when he replied. "You came home after 11. Ths store closes long before then, so what were you doing for the remaining, what, two hours? Three?"

"Forgive me, I guess because you know for a fact, then you must be right," he crossed his arms, leaning against the bench opposite her.

He looked away when she mentioned the phone, sighing. "I don't know Marian, I said that. But it would be nice if my wife could give me the benefit of the doubt when I tell her something."

Turning his gaze back to her, he frowned. He couldn't believe she kept accusing him like that. "I wasn't aware you needed to know where I was at every moment of the day," he shot back defensively. "Maybe you should start calling me and letting me know when you watch a movie, or have one of your baths."

At the moment he leaned against the bench she hated her brain. Because now was really not the time to notice how enticing he was when angry and she blamed the leaning. She had to look away to try and push those thoughts to the very back of her mind because she would not let him distract her.

"I just want to know how I ended up with messages from you and yet you deny it completely." She looked back to him and goodness he was still doing it. No, her mind was wrong and it had to stop wandering. What he said next done a lot to stop such thoughts in her head.

"I wasn't aware you had something to hide about where you have been that would cause such a reaction. If it was not for the papers you brought here I would think that you would rather me a proper little wife. One who shuts up and doesn't ask questions!"

"What do you want me to say, Marian?" He made a frustrated gesture before firmly crossing his arms again, trying to rein in his temper. "I'm not lying to you. You expect me to believe you, why can't you believe me?"

Attempting to push down his anger wasn't helped by her repeated accusations about the papers. "I didn't bring them home, Marian," he said slowly, jaw clenched.

"Maybe a wife who shuts up and doesn't ask questions would be better than one who has nothing better to do than make false accusations!"

"Because how else did they get in here?"

Her gaze hardened when he disagreed about the papers again, noting the way his jaw was cleching. He had to stop lying but she knew he wouldn't so she started to walk to the bedroom, intent on just leaving again. But what he said next stopped her in her tracks right in front of him. She barely had time to think before she was slapping him, the sound filling the quiet room.

"If that's what you want, go find a girl like that." Her voice was deadly quiet and her gaze remained challenging. If he didn't want her, just like his words and his actions suggested, then she should just let him go do what he wants. Even if it would kill her.

"I don't know, you tell me, Marian."

How could she keep accusing him, as if it was possible for him to have brought them home, but not her? How did she think that was fair? He was going to say how typical it was for her to just walk away, when suddenly she was turning back to face him, and her palm connected solidly with his face.

Bringing his hand up to his cheek he stared at her in stunned silence. "You know I would never want anyone but you," he said quietly, his tone hurt.

She watched him after she hit him, her eyes slowly going wide as she realised exactly what she did. She had only ever hit him seriously once before but he wouldn't know that. When he spoke, she slowly lifted her hand to where she had hit, making sure he knew it wasn't going to happen again. Moving his own hand, she softly ran her fingers over his cheek.

"Tear them up," she said quietly before dropping her gaze to the papers on the floor. Picking them up, she passed them to him.

He could hardly believe that she had just slapped him. She had been mad at him plenty of times. Furious, in fact. But she had never hit him before. To say it was surprising was an understatement. He didn't move when she brought her hand to his face, numbly lowering his own hand, not stopping her.

When she held out the papers he looked down at them, then back up at her. But he didn't take them from her. He hated the fact that she had been so outraged at his accusation, yet wouldn't let her own go. "You do it," he said as he brushed past her, walking out of the kitchen in to the living room to sit on the couch.

She watched him walk away and she instantly felt her heart pang with guilt. Looking back to the papers she tore one firm rip down the middle before ripping again. With that done, she tossed them into the bin and walked to the living room.

"I'm sorry," she said quietly as she sat next to him, hand going to his reddening cheek. "I don't know why I did that to you and I'm sorry."

He heard the pages ripping from where he sat, but didn't acknowledge it. Leaning back, he kept his eyes on the ceiling. He looked over at her when she sat next to him, placing her hand against his cheek. It barely hurt, though he knew there would be a mark there.

"It's not what's bothering me Marian." Truth be told, in part it was, but it paled in comparison to everything else that had happened. She had him worried. If she was telling the truth, what did that mean? How many coincidences could there be? The phone, and now this? What was going on?

"Oh," she said quietly in response to his words, hoping he took that as the hint it was. He had to keep talking and tell her what was wrong. She knew for her the divorce papers were still bothering her despite them being ripped and binned.

She stroked his cheek on more time before dropping her hand to her lap. She didn't take her gaze from him, just simply waited for him to talk. Maybe there was something else that was causing this.

"Which isn't a suggestion that I want you to do it again," he said lightly, in what was probably a pathetic attempt to change the mood a little.

If she thought he was going to talk about this, she was wrong. She had to know why he was bothered. She had to be wondering the same thing. Just what the hell was going on?

"I wont," she said with a slight smile before, on instinct, she pressed her lips softly to her cheek. Pulling back, she bit her lip and watched him. She knew what he was talking about, of course she did, she just hoped he knew why he kept acting like this.

"So neither of us want this. That's all that matters."

Reaching across, he took her hand after she'd kissed his cheek. Like her, he wanted to move past this, and didn't want her to think he didn't want to be close to her.

Neither of them wanted this, and that was all that mattered, and yet that didn't change one fact. "You still think I did it, though."

She smilesd a little when he took her hand, squeezing gently. They were quiet for a moment and when he spoke she bit her lip. The only thing she could say to that was yes, she thought he did it. Because no one else had access to their apartment and would be able to place the papers neatly there.

"That doesn't matter. It's done with now. I know you don't want that."

He shook his head at that, looking down at their joined hands. How could she say it didn't matter? Especially when she wasn't denying it. Which meant she couldn't, without lying.

"Yes it does. It means you think that I did want that, that I'm lying to you about it."

"I know you don't want to now." She sighed softly before looking away. "I love you and I'm sorry but a part of my mind can't understand what happened."

She was completely confused about this and just wished she could forget all about it. They loved each other and he clearly didn't want this divorce to actually happen. Neither did she.

"Now?" He asked, incredulous. "Now, but not before. Before, you thought that I wanted to." He looked away from her again. "If you think that, what else do you think? That I was lying when I said I wanted a family?"

He looked back over at her when she said she couldn't understand what had happened. "Neither do I, Marian. Just because you think it was me does not mean that I am lying to you. How do you expect me to forget about this when you won't believe that I'm telling the truth?"

Something had to be happeneing for him to change his mind so often. She watched him for a moment before nodding. She'd believe him, there were other stupid explanations for both the messages and the papers.

"Okay. I believe you."

"Let's just pretend this all never happened okay?"

She didn't want to think about it any more. All that mattered was that they weren't going to stop being together and things would be okay. Looking at him, she took a deep breath before squeezing his hand.

"I know you love me. I'm as confused about this as you are but if you say you didn't do that then I believe you. Maybe it is just someone playing tricks in which case I say we change locks and your phone."

He nodded at that, looking back down at their hands when she squeezed his, returning the gesture. He didn't think it would be that easy, but he wouldn't say that to her.

"I'll...go and get a new phone tomorrow, arrange someone to do that." He was doubting the point, even as he said it. He didn't believe anyone could have gotten in here, without his knowledge. And if they had done...well, he didn't want to think about that.

She nodded when he agreed to deal with those two things. They might as well, even if it made little sense. It was just a way of proving to herself that it couldn't have been Robin. Because he wouldn't deny it twice if it was him. She almost wished Guy was still here so she could blame him.

She looked at the clock and sighed. There was no way she was getting any more sleep tonight. Glancing to the kitchen she suddenly remembered the broken glass.

"I should clear that up."

"Don't worry about it now," he said weakly, knowing there was probably no point. She'd just go ahead and do it anyway.

He didn't know about her, but he doubted he'd get any sleep. Even as he thought it, he yawned, covering his mouth with his hand. Still, he was reluctant. The last two days he'd woken to these accusations from Marian. What would be waiting for them in the morning this time?

"You should go rest if you're tired."

She had seen him yawn but there was no chance she was going to bed anymore. She was awake, and would be until later today when tiredness was bound to catch up on her. She would clean up a little then find something else to do. Whenever she let go of his hand, that was.

Nodding, he pushed himself to his feet, letting go of her hand. He had to work in the morning, and he'd had more than enough of arguing with her for now.

She stood as he did, tying the dressing gown shut. Nodding, she looked at her feet. She really did doubt she'd sleep at all today and he would be getting up for work soon anyway. She'd probably still be doing whatever had to be done.

She watched him walk away before sighing, closing her eyes. After collecting herself she moved to the kitchen and began tidying up the glass, making sure there was no way anyone could get hurt. Once that was done she wiped every inch of water from the floor before standing in the silent kitchen. After a moment she lowered onto a chair at the table, head going into her hands*
