Who: Cas and Sam
What: A date
When: Sunday night, after Sam asked Cas to move in to his apartment. (backdated)
Where: An upscale restaurant in town
Warnings: Possibly boy kissing. Will update if necessary.

Sam intended to take Cas shopping for some new clothes. Whether or not Cas needed new clothes was irrelevant. Sam wanted to take Cas shopping. He wanted to update the angel's wardrobe, and see him wearing something other than that trench coat all the time. Cas looked damn fine in the trench coat, Sam had no ill feelings toward it, he just wanted to see Cas branch out a little and try something new.

About the only thing that could distract Sam from his want to go shopping just then, was the prospect of dinner out with Cas. They had been seeing each other for a while now, and while they had slipped off to spend the night under the stars, they hadn't been on a proper date. Thinking like that made Sam feel like a teenaged boy again, but he figured that was fair. he hadn't dated much, in his teen years, because his dad had dragged him around in the back of the Impala, and he hadn't stayed at any one school long enough to get to know anyone. Besides, he'd been kind of small, geeky, and shy back then.

None of his later relationships had really worked out either. Jess was about the only one that had any real potential, but Sam didn't want to ruin his mood thinking about what happened to Jess. He'd rather focus on Cas, and going out to dinner, with Cas. It took him a good fifteen minutes to decide which shirt to wear, finally settling on a smokey gray T-shirt and a darker gray button down to wear over it. He went for Khakis rather than jeans, and was glad he didn't have to worry about accessorizing.

After giving his hair one last brush, Sam sauntered into the main room of the apartment he and Cas now shared. He smiled at Cas, and when he did, his heart fluttered a little in his chest. He really did feel like a teenager, going on his first date. "Hey. Ready?"

Castiel had learned about dating from Jo. During their brief relationship they had had several dates, almost all of which had involved burgers, fries and park benches and that had been fine with Castiel. He didn't mind where they spent their time as long as they were together. The food was an excuse to sit still and talk. It was the same with Sam. As long as Sam was happy with where they were, as long as they could talk like they did in the forest, in the park, in the house, or even enjoy companionable silence, that was good.

It took Castiel a little time to realise the importance of a date as an event, to understand it was about dedicating time and focus to the other person and not about eating in an unusual location. Once he did he paid more attention to them. He never, however, bothered to prepare in the way a human might. He never fussed over what to wear or fixed his hair. He never checked his skin but he did bring Jo flowers once after seeing it in a film (where he did all his research). He contemplated doing the same for Sam. As far as Castiel was concerned there was no difference between dating a woman and dating a man apart from the fact he had to tip his head back to kiss Sam.

When Sam emerged Castiel was still sitting stiffly on the couch in his usual garb but he stood to great him. Castiel had learned that part of a date involved complimenting what the other person was wearing. He didn't really understand why except that it seemed to please them and this was enough reason. "That is a pleasing configuration," he said, though he would have found anything pleasing on Sam.

Sam beamed at the compliment. Cas often used awkward phrases, choosing words others wouldn't commonly use. That was one of the things Sam liked about Cas, though there were many. "Thanks. You look pretty snazzy yourself," Sam answered. He made a point of using words Cas might not know sometimes, just for the reaction. Words were an interesting thing, and often had a life all their own.

Sam closed the gap between Cas and himself with a few ling strides. Once close enough, he leaned in to kiss Cas softly, but firmly, on the lips. Touching Cas always made Sam feel a little tingly, and he felt the tingle all the way down his spine when they kissed. He brought a hand up to Cas' neck, fingers barely grazing the ends of his hair. He'd be happy to call the date off now, and spend the evening just sitting together on the sofa.

After a moment, Sam pulled away. he smiled at Cas, and thought if they didn't walk out the door right then, they might not make it out at all. "I was thinking Italian?" Sam suggested. Italian restaurants tended to have low, intimate lighting, which was just what Sam wanted.

Castiel tilted his head at Sam. "I presume that is a compliment. it is not req- thank you." That had been something he had had to learn too. Castiel had ambivalent feelings about compliments, particularly about his appearance as it wasn't strictly even his appearance that was being complimented but... being something that pleased Sam in any way deserved a little graciousness.

The kiss, as always, made his body react in curious ways involving pricking hair and a tingle in his skin. It felt good which was how he was able to endure long sessions on only that when before he had found touch to strange as to almost be painful. Castiel's personal space had well and truly been obliterated when it came to Sam and, yet, they had never been unclothed together.

Despite his limited experience and his backwards entrance into a romantic existence Castiel was oddly confident that they would reach the time when that would happen and there was no need to force it. He had found that he liked sex but he liked it more after he and Jo had had time to develop a closeness. With Sam he already had that connection and that desire to be closer still would come and, when it did, Castiel would welcome it. He reached out his hand and took Sam's in his. "I would like that," he said, not really knowing what he was agreeing to but trusting Sam enough not to care.

Sam linked his fingers with Cas and gave a firm squeeze. "Good. Italian it is." He felt so comfortable with Cas he sometimes forgot that Cas didn't always process things the way he did. That was all right though, it made things more challenging sometimes, but Sam enjoyed the challenge. Sam enjoyed most everything about Cas, actually, and especially liked spending time with him, no matter what they were doing. Going out to dinner was more about the tradition of dating, than anything else.

"Have you ever had Italian food?" Sam started toward the door, and reached forward to pull it open. He didn't bother with a jacket, he was pretty sure he wouldn't need it. Lately just being around Cas was enough to get his blood flowing and that kept him warm if nothing else.

Sam hadn't slept with anyone for a while. It wasn't that he lacked interest, he just hadn't been inclined to have a one night stand, or a short lived fling. He was pretty sure that wasn't the case with Cas. They'd been seeing each other for several weeks, and it just felt right, even if it was slow going. Sam kind of liked it that way.

Lookie

Castiel walked beside Sam, hand in hand. It would take someone who knew him well to pick up on the fact he was a little more relaxed than when he wasn't with Sam, in contact. He liked very much to walk like this. Only their hands touched but it made him feel a connection beyond that of mere skin. He squeezed Sam's hand in return as he pushed the button for the lift.

"No, Sam. I have been to many diners but not an Italian restaurant. Do they serve pizza?" That was the extend of Castiel's Italian cuisine experience and that had come thanks to Dean. Castiel didn't mind if they didn't have pizza, he liked to try new things and he was happy for Sam to share this new experience with him. He led Sam into the elevator and down to the street.

It was a mild evening, only a soft breeze to play at their hair. The chill of evening was slight. Castiel look a deep breath though his nose and stopped. He realised he didn't really know where they were going. "Do you have a place in mind?" he asked Sam, looking up at him with his default expression lately, a kind of content affection that it was likely he wasn't aware he was wearing.

[That? Is awesome! How did they know??]

"Yeah, I know a place. We're headed the right direction." Sam liked the way the breeze moved like fingers through Castiel's hair. At least it felt kind of like fingers in his own hair. He needed a trim, but he needed to take the time to actually do it.

"They have pizza. Really good deep dish pizza. And the calamari appetizer is the best." He smiled a little smile, he just couldn't help himself. The fact Cas was so relaxed wasn't lost on him. The angel had a tendency to seem uptight, even stoic. Sam had noticed when they were together, Cas didn't seem so stiff, and that made Sam feel good inside.

Sam let his own guard down, with Cas. Not too long ago, he had felt apprehensive with the angel. He hadn't trusted Cas, for a long while. He wasn't even sure when that started to change, but now he considered Cas family. It might have started out as a pseudo brother thing, but Sam's feelings were evolving way beyond that; Sam was falling for Cas. He wasn't ready to give it a name, but he knew it was there, and he was okay with that. He was even starting to think about the day he might be able to give it a name.

[They know that Sam is a big romantic sop who likes mood lighting^^]

"I wish to try something new. Would you choose for me Sam?" It was a clever ploy. Not only did it show Sam that he trusted him but it negated the need to look down a long list of words he didn't really understand and try to make a selection from it. Though the thought of Sam patiently explaining it to him also had its appeal. He squeezed Sam's hand again and returned Sam's little smile automatically. Castiel certainly smiled a lot more these days.

Feeling a wave of affection he titled his head to rest it in Sam's left shoulder, just to add another point of contact. If Sam had happened to pull him off into the bushes for a somewhat extensive kissing session he would not have mentioned the pizza or the calamari for some time but he was not about make such a move. He was still new enough to dating to exercise a little caution and he was getting the sense there was something a little special about this date.

Castiel lifted his head free of Sam's shoulder after a few moments, his message sent. "Perhaps after we can return to the apartment, watch a movie? I have one in mind." Watch movie had become shorthand for 'sit on couch making out over sappy fair Castiel had found in the romance section of the video store because it was the quickest way to learn about romantic human interactions.'

Sam would have liked to push Cas into the bushes and spend a few minutes just kissing him, but he didn't really think to do it. He didn't mind when Cas leaned his head against him either. He smiled a little, and thought about kissing him then, but he didn't want to make a scene while they were walking.

"I'll choose for you. Or maybe we'll just share the spaghetti. Have you ever seen Lady and the Tramp?" Sam raised a brow. He didn't think it likely that Cas had watched an animated movie about dogs, he'd be surprised if Cas had seen it, but he couldn't resist asking. The spaghetti scene was iconic.

Sam had no objection to going home after dinner. They'd have a nice walk in the evening, between the restaurant and home. Maybe Sam would manipulate things so they took the long way around. Not to avoid the movie, just to spend a few more minutes with Cas under the night sky.

Castiel frowned a little, as he tended to do when he didn't know of something another was referring to. "No, Sam, I have not seen it. Is it relevant?" He could not presume that it was. Humans went off on tangents all the time without warning and Sam more than many. They had reached the edge of the restaurant strip. They seemed to inspiring a few double-takes from passers by, hand in hand as they were, but Castiel made nothing of it, was not even aware they were looking at them in particular. He was far too concerned with following Sam's conversation and the feel of Sam's hand in his.

"I was thinking... perhaps this weekend we can spend another night outdoors. It has been a difficult time and I can think of nothing I would like to do more." Castiel pressed his shoulder to Sam's for a second. "If you are available," he added in hope.

As they reached the ice cream parlour, though, Castiel stopped. He turned towards it and stared inside, his body tense.

Sam felt his mouth turn up in a smile at the mention of another night under the stars. Cas had tole him the names of the stars, but Sam couldn't remember them all, and he wanted to hear them again. Mostly, he just wanted to lay next to Cas, feeling him breathe, listening to him talk.

"I'm definitely avail..." Sam started, but the word available sort of faded before he finished it, when Castiel's body tensed. Sam felt it like a slap across the face, and he responded in kind. He turned his gaze toward the ice cream shop, though his focus remained on Cas. "Cas? What is it? What's wrong?"

Castiel kept his hold on Sam's hand as he glared at the wooden booths, the blackboard, the row of colourful confections. "I don't want to end up here," he said softly. "I... don't want you to leave."

He didn't look back at Sam, just stared at the dark red paint, the oblivious diners, the lovers spooning ice cream into each other's mouths. Then he straightned as if he had decided something significant, the fear in his eyes replaced by resovle. "I need to come here with you first. That is the way it should be done."

"What? Cas. I'm not going anywhere." Sam turned his body to face Cas. He squeezed Cas' hand. "I'm right here," he followed up, reiterating. While his relationship with Cas had taken a turn he never saw coming, he wasn't going to back track. He liked being with Cas, he liked how he felt with Cas was near. He felt a sort of emptiness when Cas was away for too long, and seeing him again made Sam smile.

"So, wait. You mean you want ice cream before dinner?" Sam shifted his gaze, looking to the shop window as if he might see what Cas saw. He was oblivious to the people who stared at the two of them, two men holding hands in front of the ice cream shop. He might have felt a little awkward about that, if he'd thought about it, but he was far from shamed to be seen holding Cas' hand.

Castiel smiled a little, only a faint distance in his eyes as Sam assured him, as Sam filled his vision. "I don't know if you have a choice but, while you are here, I want to be with you, very much so. It is only... this place... It is where Claire came when her first man left. It was where I came when Joanna left. I don't want to come here for you. I want to come here with you. I want it... to be a good place again."

He brushed his thumb over the back of Sam's hand. "Perhaps after we eat we can come here for the sweet course?" he said, a little smile lighting his features. "They ice cream is good and they have flavoured syrup." He seemed a little surprised by this. He glanced at the cosy couple feeding each other then back to Sam. "We could... do that." He looked a little wistful.

"We could do that," Sam echoed, his tone just as wistful as Cas. He smiled at the image of the couple, and tried to imagine sitting there with Cas. It wasn't a ready made image because he hadn't ever thought of it before, but now that he had, he smiled a little smile. "We'll make this a good place for you. For us."

Ice cream was one of Sam's weaknesses. He generally tried to eat healthy, and he didn't splurge often, but sharing a sundae with Cas seemed like a good enough reason. It was a good enough reason to skip dinner, but dinner was already planned, and Sam was hungry.

"The sooner we have dinner, the sooner we can have ice cream," Sam said with a little nudge toward walking further down the street.

Castiel, content again, allowed Sam to lead him on. It wasn't hunger but curiosity that drove Castiel on. That and his enthusiasm for just sitting with Sam and talking to him. Another wave of affection washed over him as Sam promised to help him over come his association with this place. Sam Winchester had a good heart. It was one of the many things Castiel was discovering about him that made him want to spend all his free time finding out more. There was something good about Sam, a gentle intention, a softness of voice, a kindness of eye. If they weren't walking...

The restaurant strip was well-lit and busy with other couples out on dates as Sam and Castiel were. The angel liked this, being surrounded by affection and the soft side of human nature. He saw the other couples hold hands, a couple kissing on a bench, eyes only for each other. There were other benches.... But that was outside the focus of this mission. Castiel kept stroking the back of Sam's hand as they walked. "Are we close?" Castiel wanted to stop walking. Walking was suddenly very restricting.

"Just a little further." Sam used his free hand to point out the building, not too much further ahead. He didn't mind the walk. He liked seeing the other couples, now that he was part of a couple. He hadn't really cared, before, or he might have felt a little jealous sometimes when he thought about the relationships other people had. He'd never managed to maintain a relationship for long, but this time, with Cas, was going to be different.

A breeze picked up and whispered through Sam's hair. He smiled at the feel of it, like a soft caress. He wondered what Cas was thinking. His mind was jumping around, thinking about ice cream and park benches and mostly just kissing Cas. He was pretty sure that was his favorite thing to do, lately.

Castiel thought of trying to rush them but, then, none of the other couples were rushing, they were doing what they wished. Walking, embracing, kissing, as they pleased. Castiel pleased. He stopped outside, ironically, an adult shop and turned to Sam. "I am going to kiss you," he announced then he tipped back his head, reached up a little and pressed his hand to Sam's cheek. His lips met Sam's, his kiss slow and warm, gentle and affectionate but quickly building to something more impassioned. He would be like them, the couples who just kissed when the desire took them.

He barely noticed the wind playing with his hair, of the people watching or the ground beneath his feet or the wall at his back. He only noticed the tingle at his lips, the feel of Sam's skin under his hand.

Vaguely, Sam heard someone make a comment about the fact two men were kissing. Sam brought a hand up to the back of Castiel's neck, to hold him closer, in response. He wasn't going to let someone shame him from kissing his date, his boyfriend, any time he pleased. Kissing Cas felt too good, all the way down.

Sam was considerably taller than Cas, but he adjusted easily. He was used to kissing women, who were generally smaller than him. He didn't mind the height difference, and really didn't even pay attention to it except when kissing. He didn't want Cas to be uncomfortable kissing him.

At this point, the quest for food seemed unnecessary. Sam was hungry enough that his stomach rumbled slightly, but he would rather be with Cas, kissing Cas, than eating. He almost regretted the date, he would have preferred to stay in, or simply sit out under the stars.

If Castiel was the sort to be taken by fancy he would have pictured rainbow and kittens and green, green fields but he was mainly the sort to focus in on Sam and ignore all flights of fancy. He lost track of time, lacked the spur of hunger. He moved his hand around to the back of Sam's head for a moment before resting it on his shoulder. His eyes were closed but his mouth was warm and open.

He would have been content to stay like that all evening but he heard the growl of Sam's stomach. His boyfriend needed to be fed and Castiel was going to ensure that was done. Anyway, they already had plans for desert and there would be no desert without the meal. Reluctantly Castiel broke off the kiss, more satisfied than when he started, they could wait a little longer. He took hold of Sam's hand again. "I would like to taste something else now," he said with a hint of mirth. He did, however, shift closer to Sam, wrapped an arm about his waist, matching some of the other couples. He liked this new closeness.

Sam leaned into Cas as they approached the restaurant. He had never been overly affectionate in public, but found he didn't mind so much when it was Cas. He thought he should have minded more given that Cas was another man, and Sam had never even considered liking another man before. Now that it happened and he was with Cas, he just didn't see why it was such a big deal. They were just two people who enjoyed each other's company.

Sam moved ahead to reach for the door, holding it open for Cas. He might have let his other hand linger at Cas' back a moment longer than necessary, but he was sure Cas wouldn't mind. Once inside, Sam told the hostess there were two of them, abd gave Cas' hand a squeeze.

If the hostess thought anything of Sam and Castiel's situation she didn't show it but she did find them a nice, private, table by a large planter bristling with ferns. A single flower stood in a slender white vase and two wine glasses waited to be filled. The hostess gave them their menus and told them their waitress would be with them soon before bustling off to greet another couple who had just arrived.

Castiel looked across the table at Sam. "What do you suggest?" he said not even bothering to open his menu. Even while they were sitting there he ran the back of his finger over Sam's hand, just because he wanted to touch him. This was new to Castiel, too. He had never been demonstrative, his movements always contained, hand kept close to his body. He had held hands with Jo too but with Sam he found a stronger drive to touch and he wondered if it was because he had almost lost him, because he thought he had. It was the only difference he could see. Castiel himself was aware his behaviour had changed but no aspect of it displeased him. He looked at Sam and waited for his recommendations. So far, he decided, this date was going very well.

"I think I'd like to see you eat spaghetti." Maybe not the most romantic thing on the menu, but he would possibly enjoy teaching Cas to twirl the slippery noodles on his fork. That could be amusing, and Sam was smiling just thinking about it.

In truth, he didn't care what they ate. Food was a necessity. Spending the time together was the luxury, and that was why they were there. Sam glanced around the restaurant. He felt the jitters that were customary for a first date. It wasn't nerves, he was anything but nervous with Castiel, but a date carried its own stigma.

"Shall we have wine?" Sam asked, fingering the wine glass set out on the table. He wasn't much of a drinker, but he'd make an exception, to mark the occasion.

Castiel didn't know what spaghetti was so he didn't know why his eating of it would please Sam but that really didn't matter. "I would like to try it," he said, a slight quizzical tone in his voice.

The question about wine was met with the same mild pragmatism. Castiel, this time, knew what wine was, he had tried it, and found himself largely ambivalent to it but he was more than content to have it and he sensed that Sam needed a little encouragement.

"Yes, we shall," he said, smiling warmly at Sam. "I have a slight preference for red if that is significant," really more for the colour than the taste but that wasn't important to mention. He tilted his head a little. "Is there anything else we require?" The waitress was already hovering over their table, watching Castiel hand as it brush against Sam's with a small smile.

Sam ordered for the both of them, and sent the waitress on her way. As soon as she was gone, he adjusted his chair so he was a little closer to Cas. He looked down at their hands and smiled. He kind of liked how Cas was stroking the back of his hand, and didn't want him to stop. At least, not until the food came.

"Do you even know what spaghetti is?" Sam asked Cas. He didn't always know what Cas would know, and what he wouldn't know. He enjoyed learning the little things, and teaching Cas what he didn't know. It was an aspect to their relationship he wouldn't really have with anyone else. Most people knew what spaghetti was, and Sam would never even have to ask the question. Rather than feel annoyed at the things Cas didn't know, he looked forward to the challenge of explaining those things.

Castiel kept up the gentle contact. "No. I don't," he said, slightly embarrassed because he really didn't like not knowing things he was expected to. Sometimes this came out as irritation at the other person though, unless it was a tense situation and the other person (Dean) was being obscure, his irritation was largely at himself. In this context, in this company, he was rather more curious than concerned.

He tilted his head. "Why do you want to see me eat it?" It was an affectionate suspicion but suspicious nonetheless. Was Sam hoping for some amusing reaction? Something mildly unpleasant for Castiel that would illicit a reaction? What was it about spaghetti that made it novel? He knew Sam wasn't inherently unkind but he also new of the jokes he used to play on his brother. He had a sense of humour and Castiel would not put a little good natured ribbing past him. Still, if it make Sam smile and it did no harm Castiel saw no need to change his order. He waited for Sam to explain his choice.
