WHO: Claire Bennet and Sam Winchester
WHAT: A late night chat.
WHEN: Around 3AM
WHERE: The balcony of apartment #401D
RATING: TBD
STATUS: In Progress

Claire couldn't sleep. She had tried, and failed, several times throughout the night thus far. She had stared at the ceiling, tried counting sheep, and forced herself to lay still for nearly half an hour with her eyes squeezed shut. Yet no matter what she did, she just couldn't fall asleep. Her mind was too busy running in circles - bouncing between the utterly mundane sorts of thoughts such as the inventory of her store and just when the sign-up for fall classes at the University began, and the more serious of topics such as Lucifer and the send of foreboding that permeated the air throughout the city since his arrival. Finally, after nearly forty-five minutes of trying to relax her muscles via every technique she'd ever heard or read about, she had given up.

Now, nearly half an hour later, she was sitting on the balcony with a pot of hot chocolate on a small, portable burner on the table beside her and a mug filled with the liquid in one hand. There was a pen in her other hand; she was idly chewing on the end of it while going over the latest figures from her video store's quarterly report from its spot on her lap. Her hair was piled up on her head in a sloppy ponytail with a few loose strands waving in the wind and occasionally tickling her cheek.

To anyone who might have spotted her who didn't really know her, she would have appeared to be completely focused on what she was doing. Yet even as she scribbled down a few figures in the margins of the paperwork, her mind wasn't really on the task. A fact made obvious when a few seconds later she set the mug down, then the paperwork, and rubbed at her eyes with a frustrated sigh.

Sam hadn't been sleeping, either. Though it should have come as a surprise to absolutely no one, given the current happenings around the town. Colligo, at the start, had been something of a safe haven for Sam, though he should have known better. Safe haven really didn't exist. It had been nice to fool himself for a little while, but now it was back to the old grind.

Sighing, he saw that the balcony light was on and figured that someone had forgotten to turn it off when they went to sleep, Sam walked toward the door to step out and do it for them. He was surprised, however, to see Claire there. Sliding the door open, he stepped outside and sat in a chair across from her, giving her a sad smile. He was used to not sleeping well by then. At home, he'd have been lucky to even get a half nights sleep on a regular night. But it still bothered him. He wondered if Claire was the same way.

"You couldn't sleep either, hm?" he asked, the question more empty than anything, because he already knew the answer before he asked it.

Claire glanced up at the sound of the door opening. She offered Sam a small smile that wasn't as cheerful of one as she probably would have given under different circumstances but certainly wasn't forced either. "I tried," she admitted with a slight shrug. "And failed pretty spectacularly. Just too much on my mind, I guess."

Absently she picked up her mug of hot chocolate and took a sip. She peered at him over the rim. "I didn't wake you up, did I?" she asked almost as an afterthought. She didn't see how she could have, considering she'd been outside and hadn't made much noise beyond an occasional squeaking of the lawn chair she was propped up in whenever she shifted a certain way. However she wanted to make sure because, for all she knew, he was the world's lightest sleeper or something.

Before he could answer, though, she looked at her drink then back to him. "Want some?" she tacked on, giving a slight jostling of the mug in his direction. "I have a whole pot of the stuff."

Sam shook his head when she asked if she woke him up. "I wasn't sleeping either," he said softly. "I'd been reading, and then went out to see if Squeaky needed food," he said with a shrug.

"Then I saw the light out here on and figured someone left it on when they went to bed," he said, relaxing in his chair and smiling when she offered him some hot cocoa. "I'll run in real quick and grab a mug for myself," he told her, giving a warm smile as he stood from his chair and headed inside.

He hated that he'd more or less brought this on these people. No, he obviously hadn't asked to be have Lucifer show up here, not by any stretch of the imagination, but that didn't change that it had happened. Sighing, he shook it off and grabbed a mug from the cabinet, before closing it and heading back inside to sit with Claire again. "This whole lockdown thing sucks. I mean, I don't mind hanging around with you or Dean or Cas, don't get me wrong. But being told, more or less, that we can't leave? It sucks."

He knew that it was no news to her. But he also figured that misery loved company way more than was fair. So if neither of them could sleep? Why not just sit on the balcony and bitch?

When Sam returned with his mug, Claire picked up the pot of hot chocolate and poured him some. She ignored the soft hissing sound of the too-hot handle on the pot touching her palm and, by the time she'd held the mug out for him to take and set the pot back down on the burner, the blisters had already healed over. She met his gaze when he started to complain, giving a nod before picking up her own drink once more.

"Tell me about it," she agreed with a slight frown. "Like you said. It's not that hanging around you guys isn't great, but I'm not really liking this having to hide stuff. I'm not exactly one for sitting on the sidelines."

With a quiet sigh she took a drink. Her gaze slid to the hot chocolate then back to Sam. "I just wish someone would do something," she added. "Even if it doesn't fix the problem just seeing some kind of action being taken would probably make things seem a little less hopeless, you know?"

Sam nodded his head when she mentioned that someone needed to do something. "I don't understand why he wasn't dead the second that his face showed, you know? I mean, I know that there must be some grand plan for it all, but..." he smiled politely in thanks when she poured some hot chocolate into his mug, raising it to his lips to take a sip before he continued. "I don't know. Usually, I'm on the front lines," he said softly. "Feels pretty crappy to be benched..."

He stopped then, because complaining wasn't doing him a world of good. Especially since, all things considered, he'd had a pretty easy ride so far. Easier than last time, anyway - which wasn't saying much.

But she'd lost so much. He looked at her, wondering how she was even functioning right then. Sighing, he cast his eyes out over the city. Usually, it was alive at this time of night. But right then...it was dead. And that was almost more ominous than anything else. Frowning, Sam immersed himself in carefully sipping from his mug again.

"Things are almost easier when you're not benched."

"I don't know about easier," Claire countered, her own gaze having fallen to the cityscape around the time that Sam's had. She looked back to him with a slight smile. "Definitely more exciting, though."

Scooting up a bit in the chair, she drew her legs up so she was sitting cross legged. She studied Sam for a minute. When she spoke again, her voice was softer. "I think my biggest issue is that, for once, I'm not the special one." Realizing how that sounded, she did her best to explain. "It's like, back home, most of the time that a treat would pop up it was somehow because of me. Either it was my fault, or it was because of my ability, or something. Here, that's not the case."

Taking another sip of her drink, she sighed quietly. "I just keep thinking that it's not really fair for me to be here, hiding, when everyone else that it's not about is out there. Because this isn't about me, not even close, so why do I get this special treatment when they don't?" She snorted a little.

"Plus," she admitted, "I've never been very good at doing what I was told. So there's probably that, too."

Sam chuckled. "Only reason I say easier is because there's less time to think about it, you know?" he asked, shrugging and taking another sip from his mug. "I mean, not that I prefer that to this...no way."

He looked at her in confusion when she mentioned that she wasn't the special one, but when she elaborated, he nodded. "I get that. It was about a fifty-fifty split between Dean and I at home - though mine were always the doozies," he laughed softly. "I can't believe, though, how everyone's at each other's throats over this. No one's putting any trust in anyone and..." he shook his head. "I shouldn't be surprised, but I can't help it."

"It's about you, because you're important to Dean and I, though," he said, giving her a small smile. "He'd use you against us. We'd both do just about anything to get you back from him, too. And I'm sure he knows that. So I, for one, am pretty glad we're keeping you hidden and safe."

He didn't have a lot of actual friends. He liked to keep the ones he had alive. Call him crazy.

Claire gave a faint sigh and shook her head. She was smiling, lightly, as she glanced at Sam but there was also faint worry shining in her eyes. "That's just it," she pointed out gently. "I shouldn't matter, Sam. No one and nothing should matter, besides stopping him, because he's going to do everything he can to use all of that against you guys." She sipped at her drink then frowned lightly down at the liquid.

"Which I think is what he's sorta doing, with everyone else, honestly." She looked back to him, turning so she was sitting sideways in the chair and therefore facing him directly. "It's like... God gave everyone these orders, right? And if I had to bet money, I'd say that they all tie in together somehow. But then Lucifer comes along, and he pretty much knows that's the case too. So he's... sowing all this mistrust between everyone, doing things to make them want to act and to question whether or not following those orders is the right thing to do."

Setting down her mug, she continued. "It's almost like it's this big jigsaw puzzle. Everything will fit together, as long as you don't lose any of the pieces. And I think he's trying to make us lose some of the pieces so whatever the plan really is, can't happen." She shook her head and snorted lightly.

"And that sounded a lot less lame in my head."

"I know. But we're people and it doesn't work like that," Sam said, shrugging. "When you start messing with emotions, I guess some beings would call it where humans fall short," he said softly, swallowing thickly and looked at the ground. He didn't know if he'd call it falling short, but it was a bit of a pain in the ass when it came to situations like this.

Sam listened when she told him what about God and bigger plans and he nodded his agreement. "I know, you're right, it's just..." he shrugged a shoulder, looking at her and swallowing nervously. "I wish they'd get on with it..." he laughed bitterly. "No, it doesn't work like that, but man do I ever wish it did..." he said, stopping himself from talking for the moment by taking another sip from his mug of hot cocoa.

"It's not lame, it's true..." he told her, giving her a soft smile.

Claire grinned. "No, it was pretty lame. True, but also definitely lame," she replied easily. "What can I say? I'm good at a lot of things. Dying especially. But deep, thought provoking analyzing of situations? Not so much."

Picking up her drink, she took another sip then absently licked her lips to rid the taste of chocolate from them. Putting the mug back on the table, she absently pulled her hair out of its ponytail and ran her fingers through it to smooth out the lumps and tangles. "You know," she continued thoughtfully, "We could just ask them why they're not doing anything."

Claire uncrossed her legs and drew them up to her chest. Wrapping her free arm around them, she rested her chin on her bent knees. "I mean, obviously Castiel doesn't know, but maybe Gabriel does. Or Michael. Or, you know, any of the other fifty billion angels running around right now," she pointed out. "What's the worst they're going to do? Tell us even less than the great big nothing that they're already telling us?"

"It's no wonder you and my brother are so perfect together," he laughed and looked over the town again, half-hoping that somehow he'd turn his head and see that everything had changed. Nothing had changed.

"I guess it's worth a try, though I don't see us actually getting anywhere..." he laughed bitterly. "I know Cas doesn't know. And Anna doesn't. Do you think it's even worth using our breath?" he laughed, because he knew that the chances of anyone other than Lucifer speaking up about their intentions was slim-to-none, and frankly, Sam didn't need to know about his intentions. Or maybe he needed to, but he definitely didn't want to.

"We could still try, though, I guess."

"Like I said," Claire replied with a bit of a shrug, "it can't hurt. The worst they can do is just not tell us anything." She paused. "Well, that's not the worst they can do, not even by a long shot, but I don't think they'd do anything worse than that." At least she hoped not. If the angels had issues with them wanting to know stuff beyond 'stay hidden and trust in us as we continue to drop like flies', the world was pretty much screwed anyway because that would just be stupid.

"And I don't know if Dean and I are necessarily perfect together," she added almost as an afterthought. She finished off the last of her drink before idly running her finger along the inside of the cup to get the last of the chocolate. "But we do mesh pretty well, and don't let the other get away with being too much of an idiot." She licked the chocolate from her finger and set down the mug.

"Which is why we're both here. He wasn't exactly big on the hiding when it was first suggested. Still isn't, really, but unless he wants me out there getting into God only knows what kind of trouble, he'll stay put because he knows I will." She shrugged a bit and cast a grin toward Sam. "Most people would probably call that blackmail but I think of it as... creative convincing."

Shrugging when she mentioned that it couldn't hurt, he nodded his head. "Yeah. And best case scenario, we get answers. We'll probably have to keep whatever answers we get private, but whatever...not like we're doing anything that isn't already being done, right?" he asked, finishing the last of his hot chocolate and smiling at her.

Sam laughed. In trying to make him think that she and Dean weren't perfect for each other, she'd listed all the reasons that they were. And he had to laugh at that. Smoothing a hand through his hair again, he straightened the front of his shirt where it had wrinkled from how he'd been sitting and watched the grin on her face. "See, that's why I think you guys are great together. You know how to get Dean to listen. You don't know how hard I had to work to get him to listen to me for even half a second..." he chuckled softly.

Claire shook her head lightly. "See, but that's different," she pointed out as she sat up a bit straighter. "I'm his girlfriend. You're his brother. I never listened to my brother either." Her nose scrunched up a bit and she grinned. "Even when I probably should have. It would've saved me a lot of trouble, at least."

Talking about Lyle made her think about him and realize just how much she missed him. It was easy to pretend for the most part that he was just off somewhere else, doing his thing. However there were moments when it really hit her that she might not ever see him again. And for all of the headaches he'd caused her when they were going up, that wasn't something that she liked to dwell on all that much.

"So I vote we go to Gabriel. He might have done some pretty awful things to you guys before, but I think we stand a better chance of getting him to talk than Michael," she suggested after a second. A slight scratching sound at the door made her glance toward it and she smiled. Chomper was standing there, head tilted slightly to the side and trying his best to figure out how to reach the handle. Standing up, she moved to the door and opened it to let him out.

The baby raptor immediately made a dash past her and all but leaped up into her abandoned chair. Claire snorted softly and scooted him to the side. The minute she was seated he climbed half into her lap and got busy trying to gnaw his way through the arm of the chair. Claire turned her attention to Sam again.

"And he did bring me ice cream when I was being all emo-kid," she pointed out. "Plus brought all of the stuff from the apartments to this one so we wouldn't be bored out of our minds. Who knows? He might decide to be helpful again."

Sam laughed. "Yeah, I guess that's true. I never listen to Dean, either. Especially not when I should..." he paused, thinking about exactly what that meant and wincing. Yeah, especially not when he should was right. They wouldn't be in this situation if he'd listened to Dean. Shaking that thought off, he watched as Claire let Chomper out onto the porch.

Sam chuckled a little bit when Claire shooed the dinosaur to the side and even more when he climbed into her lap. "Funny how they make such good pets," Sam said, looking inside at Squeaky, who was on the bar in his cage, looking out at them, slightly jealous of Chomper. But Sam couldn't let him out like that. He'd fly off and get into trouble.

"I guess we could try," he said softly, wondering if Gabriel would actually help him. He'd all but stalked Sam's filtered posts on the forums and seemed not to hate him as much as he'd initially made it out to be. He figured, maybe, he'd talk.

"Like you said. Worst that happens is that he says no."

"Exactly. It doesn't hurt to ask," Claire agreed. Turning a bit, she frowned at Chomper. "Stop it," she said firmly. The raptor paused in his gnawing, peering up at her with his head tilted a bit to the side. When he slowly made to put his mouth back over the arm of the chair, she cleared her throat.

"I'm still watching you," she pointed. The dinosaur stopped then, curling around a little until he was firmly wedged between her and the former chew toy. She absently rubbed the end of his snout then turned back to Sam.

"If he ever gets out of this... teething phase, it'll be too soon," she said with a shake of her head. Then she, too, glanced inside at Squeaky still stuck in his cage. "Do you want to go inside?" she asked as she looked to Sam once more. "You could let him out for a little while. It's not the same as the open skies but at least he won't be stuck in such a small area."

Sam chuckled at Chomper as he essentially stuck his tail between his legs in the best way a dinosaur could, then looked at Claire when she suggested they go inside. "Sure," he said, smiling and standing, walking over to the door and opening it for Claire. He was probably a bit old fashioned, but it was as it was.

He closed the door when they both walked through and went over to Squeaky's cage, letting him get out and stretch his wings. He immediately flew over to Chomper and landed in front of him, where they looked at each other for a few seconds and then proceeded to play.

Sam chuckled and sat in a chair. "I'm glad they get along. It'd probably be complicated if they were trying to eat each other," he laughed softly, relaxing and looking at Claire again. "I think Squeaky misses being able to fly around outside though. But the dinosaur outside flying around would probably be a bit of a beacon to us, hm?" he said quietly.

Carrying her paperwork in with her, she moved first to the desk shoved against one wall and put it on top of the ever-growing pile of more paperwork that was accumulating the more time she spent away from the video store. Running a hand through her hair at the sight, she purposefully turned away from it and crossed to the couch. Dropping down onto it, she looked to Sam.

Claire gave a small, sad sort of smile and a nod. "Yeah," she agreed, as much as she hated doing so. "Unless we can figure out a way to make him invisible or something, he should probably stay inside until this is over with." Her gaze cut to the dinosaur in question; her smile lost some of its sorrow at the sight of him doing his best to grab ahold of Chomper's tail while simultaneously trying to balance on the raptor's back. Chomper, meanwhile, was running in a small circle that at any moment looked as though it might cause him to topple right over sideways.

"But like you said," she added as she looked back to Sam, "at least they get along. And they both seem to have nearly endless supplies of energy, so they can keep each other entertained." Sometimes, she knew, you just had to find the bright side in a not so great situation.

Sam laughed - a genuine, real, actual laugh that he hadn't had since the beginning of this mess - when Chomper and Squeaky ran in circles and played. Shaking his head, he looked back at Claire and shrugged. "Yeah, he doesn't seem to mind, as long as he's got a buddy," he mused, watching now as Chomper had caught on to the fact that Squeaky was on his back. He turned his head to nip at him, only to have Squeaky take off and start flying in tiny circles over his head.

"It's like watching Sylvester and Tweetie," he mused, looking at Claire again with a small smile. "This situation would suck all the more if we didn't have them, I think..." he added with a grin.

He could tell, though, that Squeaky missed home. Not that this wasn't nice, with all of the things that Claire and Dean had asked Gabriel to bring to them, but Squeaky had gotten used to the comforts of Sam's apartment. "And hey," he looked at her. "I know it's harder because, hello, Lucifer, but...maybe they have the right idea. Make the best out of a crappy situation by enjoying company, you know?"

Sylvester and Tweetie, Claire decided, really did surmise Chomper and Squeaky. Only without the actual intention on Chomper's part to eat Squeaky. Or, at least, Claire certainly hoped so. To date, the raptor hadn't so much as tried to bite anything that was living. She just hoped it stayed that way but had a feeling that, if it hadn't happened by now, it probably wouldn't.

Casting Sam a smile, she absently tucked some of her hair behind her ear before nodding. "Definitely," she agreed. "Company helps. It'd really suck if we didn't all get along." And boy, wouldn't that be an understatement. She didn't even want to consider the possibility, honestly.

A muffled thud caused her gaze to snap back to the dinosaurs. Sure enough, Chomper was scrambling back to his feet after crashing into one of the walls. Squeaky was perched on the edge of the desk and she would have sworn was giving the raptor a victorious look. Claire giggled at the sight, only to clamp her hand over her mouth as the giggle turned into a full-out laugh when Chomper made a rather impressive leap upward and managed to grab ahold of one of Squeaky's feet. Effectively tugging him back down to ground level, the duo immediately began chasing one another in circles again.

Eyes sparkling, Claire looked back to Sam. "I bet," she said in a completely lighthearted tone, "if we videotaped this, we'd make a fortune."
