WHO: Claire Bennet, Priestly, and OPEN
WHAT: Selling white boards to the masses.
WHEN: Right after this. (Backdated to the morning following the arrival of the Gentlemen.)
WHERE: In front of the Housing Complex
RATING: TBD
STATUS: In Progress
NOTES: This scene is OPEN to anyone who wants to buy a white board or just jump in, in general!

She wasn't exploiting people. That was the common thought that kept flashing through Claire's mind as she and Priestly set up their table in front of the Housing Complex. She wasn't exploiting people. Exploitation was defined as 'the practice of taking selfish or unfair advantage of a person or situation, usually for personal gain'. Claire preferred to think of it as 'filling a need while happening to make a bit of money at the same time'. A splitting of hairs, perhaps, but it definitely worked for her. Besides, they'd paid $3 a piece for the white boards and were only charging $5. That was only a two dollar profit, to be split evenly, and all of the money was going to eventually go back to the city in some way anyway, right?

Eventually, she decided, if she kept telling herself such things, she would come to truly believe them.

For all of her uncertainty, though, she was going through with the plan. A sign was made that advertised the white boards as being cheap and readily available right out the front doors of where they were all living. Even as they were setting up, they'd managed to sell a handful to various townspeople who had wandered past. And she meant what she'd told Priestly. If a kid needed one, she'd hand it over without a single cent exchanging hands.

Casting a smile at the man beside her, Claire took a seat in one of the available chairs they'd brought out so they weren't on their feet all day. With her own whiteboard in hand, she scribbled out a note to him and held it up between them so he could read it.

Okay. I think we're ready to official "open".

Priestly agreed that they weren't exploiting people. If they were exploiting people, they'd be charging at least $10 a pop for the boards, and he wouldn't be so willing to hand over boards to little ones, either.

He plopped down in the chair beside Claire before looking over to read her note. Smiling, Priestly gave her a nod before picking up another white board and scribbling out a note. If we keep going at this rate, we're gonna have to get some more in about an hour. That wouldn't be a bad thing or anything, just a fact.

The guy who owned the supply store said he had plenty he could sell us. Claire write a reply back, smiling as she showed him the reply. It really had been a smooth business transaction. Granted she'd promised a bit of advertising in the video store for the guy's shop, but she didn't mind offering it. His prices were decent enough and he wasn't quite as braindead as most of the locals. Then again, she hadn't bothered asking him any specific questions that tended to get idiotic responses, either.

Turning a brilliant smile to a couple as they approached and bought two boards (complete with markers), she waited until they'd left before handing the cash over to Priestly for safekeeping and returning her attention to the white board in front of her. There wasn't much else to do besides 'talk' to each other and wait for more customers. It wasn't like they could haul a tv outside and start watching a film.

Well, they could, but Claire didn't think that'd look all that professional and she wanted to come across as at least someone mature about this. Or as mature as the two of them were capable of coming across.

So what are your plans for your part of the $? she wrote this time, giving him a curious glance as she showed him the question.

Smiling, Priestly gave her another nod at her first message. He then quickly stuffed the money Claire had handed to him into a bag, then shifted in his seat somewhat so he could stick it back under himself. Yeah, he was sitting on the money bag. But who could blame him? There was no sound, so it'd be easy for someone to sneak up from a direction they weren't looking and gank the money if they weren't paying attention, but how could no sound stop him from being able to notice someone, literally, pulling the money right out from under him?

Her next question made him smile just a touch more. Quickly, in that messy handwriting of his, he scribbled out I was thinking I'd take you to dinner.

Claire's smile was a sweet one as she read his reply, her already good mood seeming to lighten even more. She knew that some people might question what she saw in Priestly, given his rather unorthodox look. After all, he had a mohawk that changed colors depending on what he felt like doing with it that day, and wore shirts that couldn't be politically correct even if they wanted to. She, meanwhile, looked like the stereotypical 'All American Girl' with blond hair and tan skin and clothing that, while not exactly off the pages of Abercrombie & Fitch, weren't too far removed. But those people obviously had never taken the time to get to know him, or her, and when he made comments like that one she found herself wondering just why others couldn't look at him and see what she did.

Of course, as touched as she was by the comment - her reaction making that much obvious to anyone with eyes - she couldn't help but teasing a bit as she replied, Even I can't eat that much money's worth in food.

Leaving a space she wrote beneath it, Aside from that though, there's nothing you want to buy?

After reading her messages, Priestly smiled and scooted his chair over a couple inches, so that there was only a small space between them. The fact that she hadn't said no to him taking her out to dinner was a good thing, in his mind. It meant that she didn't mind this whole... dating prospect. Because that was quite obviously an official date and everything.

But, in response to the question she wrote down he just shrugged before jotting down a quick. Dunno yet. But I could just pick some ritzy joint. Or take you out a few times. He really hadn't put much thought into what he wanted to get with the money they were going to earn by doing this. He'd probably need to get some new hair gel soon, and he couldn't help wondering if this place had a tattoo shop. Priestly wouldn't mind getting some new ink.

Claire certainly didn't mind the prospect of dating him in an official capacity. He made her laugh, they got along, and had more in common than people might think. Yes he was a bit older but really, the age difference wasn't noticeable. Plus, spending time with him was currently one of the few perks she'd found to being stuck in this place. Dating, officially that is, was just the next logical step.

With another smile, Claire thought for a moment over his response. Her own reply was postponed for a few moments by the arrival of a handful of people. Once they'd sold the appropriate number of boards, she did a quick count of what they had left. He was right. If this kept up, they'd need more within the hour.

Once they were alone again, she got to work writing once more. No spending all your money on me. Not that she'd complain - she definitely wouldn't - but Claire felt a little guilty at the thought and didn't want to risk him resenting her later if she didn't do the same. Although she was planning on spending some of her money on him. She just had a few other things she wanted to do with it, too.

Priestly was used to chuckling at things if they amused him, whether he made a sound when he did it or not. So, when she replied to him with that, he chuckled silently and rolled his eyes. Fine. I'll spend some of it on me. Even if I don't want to. he wrote down before turning the board some so she could see it.

That smile still on his lips when, a couple seconds later, he leaned over to press a kiss to her cheek. They hadn't done anything more than that before, and the only other time he'd done that at all was after she fell off the roof. So, it was safe to say that he wasn't planning on shoving her into anything she didn't want. But, he liked her none the less. And he wanted her to know that.

Claire gave a fond shake of her head and smiled in bemusement at his clear reluctance. The kiss, even being as chaste as it was, made her stomach flip-flop ever so slightly. He made her feel special - special in a way that she didn't mind being - and when they were together Claire truly felt like she was the only one he was even noticing.

Reaching out, she took on of his hands lightly in hers and gave him a semi-coy smile. Someone approaching made her attention flicker back to their sales and she handed over a white board and took the money with her free hand. When they'd left, Claire gaze dropped briefly down to their still-joined hands before she scrawled out another message to him on her white board.

Things keep going, we might want to learn sign language. Then we can teach a class and really make some cash. She was totally joking, of course, and grinned as she showed him what she'd written so he'd know she didn't mean it, not really.

Priestly couldn't help chuckling silently at her sign. He let go of her hand then, but only so he could quickly write a note back to her. Hey, that's not such a bad idea, babe. he added a little shrug as he turned the board to show her what he had written, followed by a quick smile.

It didn't take him long to reach over to snag her hand again, this time lacing their fingers together. When another couple approached them, he quickly exchanged two boards and two markers for another ten bucks with his free hand, not wanting to let go of Claire's.

Even though it couldn't be heard Claire laughed at his response. Somehow she had a feeling he'd say something along those lines, and was glad to see she'd been right. Granted that felt a bit more like exploitation than just selling white boards, but if things kept going for too long it would make sense. And be a good way to save the masses some major medical bills from the wrist strain they'd get from all the writing. Or something. Claire could always rationalize the idea later, if it came to that.

By the time the next person approached to get a board, Claire had already scooted her chair close enough that even the small space between them was all but gone. Her head was resting lightly on his shoulder but she straightened up for the customer, made the transaction, then wrote a quick note to Priestly about something she'd been debating since she realized that no one in Colligo could so much as make a sound.

I think I'm going to try talking to my dad again.

Priestly liked how close their chairs had gotten. Just like he liked the way she let her head rest on his shoulder, or the way her eyes crinkled just a little when she laughed. No, not in a "she's aging" way, but in a way that only happened when she was genuinely amused.

Yeah, it was fair to say, Priestly was a bit smitten with her. And it wasn't a bad thing, at least not to him.

When he read her newest note a small, almost sad grin spread across his lips before he scribbled out a reply, then turned it just a little so that she could read it easier. That'd be good. You don't want to end up like me and my parents. We don't talk. Ever.

Claire's own smile mirrored his. Caring, sincere, but laced with just a smidge of sorrow. Part of her wanted to hug him, offer comfort even though he clearly wasn't asking for any. Instead she turned her attention to her own board and wrote out, That's your parents' loss. I think you're great just the way you are.

Her stomach did a small flip whens he showed him what she'd written. It was one thing to say something like that but to write it out made it seem more... real, somehow. Less able to deny it later even if she couldn't imagine ever doing such a thing.

It would appear he wasn't the only one slightly smitten, and Claire certainly wasn't complaining. As far as she was concerned, Priestly was the best thing to happen to her in a good, long while.

Reading that response made Priestly's smile grow again, and, it sounded cheezy, but it made his heart pound hard a couple times. Sure, he was twenty-six years old. But he was a twenty-six year old that wasn't too used to having a girl he was interested in even give him a second glace (unless it was shock over his appearance), let alone like him any in return.

He turned his green eyes back down to the board before quickly writing, Good. I think you're pretty great, too. And he meant it.

Once he angled the board more towards her, Priestly turned to look at her again, a soft smile on his lips. He'd been wanting to give her a kiss that wasn't on her cheek or her forehead, but he just hadn't found the right time yet. After all, pushing her was the last thing he wanted to do. And he still wasn't sure about the timing.

Considering Claire felt as though she hadn't been able to really smile - at least not for more than a few precious moments at a time - for quite some while, it was a much-welcomed change of pace when she spent happy moments like this with Priestly. Spending time with him was something that was normal, and fun, and lightened the heaviness that had plagued her for too long.

It was also the fact that he did make her so happy that she had done her best to keep him away from her family. She loved them, she did, but she didn't want the issues that plagued all of them to spill over into whatever it was that she had with him. Still, with the decision to attempt to be mature and contact her dad weighing on her, Claire knew that she couldn't keep her family and Priestly apart for long.

She wasn't going to think about such things at the moment, though. She was far too busy losing herself in his green-eyed gaze and wondering if he was ever going to kiss her, really kiss her, or if she should just make the first move herself and be done with it.

The thought created an unconscious reaction resulting in her absently licking the edge of her lower lip and scooting so close that the only way she could be closer would be to actually sit on his lap. Which would definitely get her point across but was a little too forward, even for Claire.

Priestly couldn't help it. When he caught her licking his lip like that it made him bite down gently on his own for a moment. It didn't last long though. With her being as close as she was, and looking at him that way, Priestly found himself slowly leaning closer. The grin tugged at the corners of lips a bit more for just a second before he gently pressed them against Claire's.

When their lips touched Priestly let his eyes slide closed, one hand coming up to rest gently on the back of her head. Of course, if she tried to pull away even the slightest bit Priestly would let her. But that didn't mean that he didn't enjoy it. Even this chaste made his stomach flop over. It was something he had been wanting to do, and he was pretty sure he'd finally gotten to the right time.

It felt as though time slowed to a veritable crawl as Priestly leaned ever closer until, at long last, their lips were touching. Claire's eyes also slid closed and one of her hands moved up his arm to rest on his shoulder. The thought of pulling away didn't even flicker through her mind. In fact, after a few seconds, her lips parted slightly and her tongue darted out to brush against his lips in an attempt to deepen the kiss.

Everything else, in the meantime, seemed to fade into the background until Claire forgot about it all. There was no table filled with white boards, no epidemic that had robbed them of sound. Even the worry of being seen by family, or someone who might inform her family, was nonexistent. There was nothing else that mattered to Claire than her, him, and this shared moment between them.

To say Priestly was relieved that Claire didn't pull away would be a massive understatement. Time slowed for him as well then, and if there had been any sound in the world around him he wouldn't have heard it, because all he knew in that moment was that he was there with a beautiful girl that actually liked him. She never pushed him away or called him names for dressing the way he chose to dress, and that only made him like her more.

Since the two of them had gradually become closer over the past few weeks, it had made it easier for him to deal with the fact that none of his friends from back home were here, and also easier to deal with the fact that he was in a different world entirely. And hell, even the fact that no one could hear anything didn't bother him all that much lately.

But the important thing was that here he was, kissing her, and she was letting him. He pressed his lips against Claire's just a touch harder then.

The hand that had been resting against his shoulder slid upward, to the nape of his neck, as Claire leaned closer to him. Her heart was hammering loudly - or what would have been loudly could she actually hear it - in her chest. It was nice, this feeling of being with someone and feeling as though she was the only thing in the world that mattered. And kissing him was really nice.

Perhaps that was due to the fact that they had waited and she didn't feel he was just with her for 'that'. Or perhaps it was because he was so clearly not the completely self-confident guy that he appeared to be yet had taken a chance in kissing her regardless. Whatever the reason, the kiss was special and one she wasn't likely to soon forget.

In fact it wasn't until she more sensed than saw (as her eyes were still shut) someone on the other side of the table that Claire pulled away. Even then she did so reluctantly, and slowly, giving him a smile before turning her attention to the middle-aged man and woman who stood there. The man was slightly frowning, shaking his money at them, but the woman shot her a knowing look.

Claire didn't blush as she took the money and handed over two whiteboards, but she came close.
