who: Merlin | OPEN
what: skateboarding -- sort of.
when: friday afternoon
where: outside the apartments
status: open | incomplete

Merlin was relieved to be back in this version of the city. There was never any shortage of things to do in this time. The throwback to the past had been strange because places like home - it wasn't as easy to find work to do, or things to keep busy. Not to mention the clothes are better. He'd been eager to try some new form of transportation since arriving. His friends were of the impression that a motorcycle was not a good idea for him, and one try at it was enough for him to agree. Bicycle was the next best thing but when he'd got into the shop the guy working there insisted he'd be 'cooler' with a skateboard. Merlin did like the designs, and the other had shown him how he could ride the skateboard which did look fun, so he bought it.

Now Merlin was on the sidewalk outside the apartments rolling unsteadily back and forth, the knees of his jeans torn up, bits of dirt all over from the many times he'd fallen. Not that it discouraged him. He was able to make it up the sidewalk at a decent speed now, which was enough improvement to motivate him.

Robin was still getting used to the recent change. His wife had convinced him to try more 'modern' clothing, and while it was less...complicated, he had yet to figure out how it was supposed to be more comfortable. Then again, he was used to dressing in layers and zippers tended to be difficult to get used to sometimes. Still, he at least blended in now as he stepped out for a walk that day.

The change had found him wondering more, exploring the new city and...almost getting run over by several 'cars' before he realized to cross on the corners. However, the appearance of the boy on a board with wheels did raise an eyebrow and Robin watched him go by with a small smirk- strange, he seemed familiar somehow.

"Good day to you!" That same grin and a nod. "What's....that thing?" A curious question regarding the board he was rising.

Merlin had missed this modern clothing after so long with those tights and short pants. Denim and t-shirts, and gods were sneakers so much nicer then any kind of shoes he'd worn in his life (Especially with colored toe socks). The other fun thing about the clothes. You could always tell the new people from times closer to his then this one by the way they looked in the outfits. Either they were mismatched, or just looked uncomfortable in the whole thing. Robin had the latter going for him. Not to mention the greeting.

"Hello." Merlin smiled and stopped, rolling the skateboard back and forth under one foot. "It's a skating board. It is suppose to make it faster to go places, and be more fun then walking...I just haven't quite figured it out."

He'd finally managed to stay balanced on it while moving, and even figured out how to kick off so he could keep moving forward. It was when he needed to turn that he ran into a problem.

"Ah..." He made a bit of a face at the contraption- it looked like something Will Scarlet would come up with...then again, it could only be used on the unusually hard ground of this time. Shaking his head, he smiled back up at the lad.

"You don't seem all that comfortable on it." A note as he examined the boy more closely, eyes narrowing a little and remarking. "I'm sorry, but you look somehow familiar- have you met before? I'm Robin. Robin of Locksley."

"I'm sort of teaching myself. I only got it today." He shrugged slightly, sure that he would figure it out sooner or later -- or just give in and buy a bicycle instead. Either way, he would have a faster mode of transportation soon, and the best part was that - unlike the horses - he didn't need to feed or clean up after either of the other two options.

"I don't think so. I've been here a while though so you might have seen me. I'm Merlin." He was always running around doing something, it wouldn't be impossible for Robin to recognize him. It certainly couldn't be because of who he was, seeing as all the pictures he'd seen of "Merlin" were crazy old men.

"I see." Robin smirked at the young man and his device, wondering why anyone would dare try to get around in such a way. It seemed impractical to him. But, perhaps it was better not to ask.

"Merlin?" Robin thought a moment then raised a brow. "The Merlin as in King Arthur, Merlin?" He stared at the boy. Yes, certainly interesting. First Arthur, Gwen...then the wizard himself. "Funny, I always imagined you with a beard."

"Yes." He smiled and nodded. "He's still a prince actually, but yes that Merlin."

Then, of course, the obligatory remark about his lack of a beard. Strange how that was always the first thing people though about once it was established who he was. Maybe he should try growing a bit of a beard? He got a bit scruffy now and then, but it seemed like he ought to just leave it that way. "I had one for a while, or will have when I'm older apparently."

"Oh...of course. I've been told...by Gwen, I mean."

He smirked at the thought, the boy looking well..far from the old wizard he thought of Merlin to be. "Perhaps...it would certainly help to identify you better. At least...it should." He shook his head. "Well..is any of it true? I mean about..magic and the like? Not that it should seem so far fetched after all this- this whole world feels like a spell."

He probably didn't look anything like what the average person would expect 'Merlin' to be. Especially with the jeans and skateboard - those were two things you just don't mix with medieval old magicians usually. He'd try the beard, and see if it helped.

"The magic is true. I don't know about the rest. The stories I've read are -- I hope they aren't true, but they seem to take place in our future so time will tell. Assuming we ever go back to Camelot, and I'm in no rush." He quite liked it in this particular time. He did miss people from back home, but he had to admit -- this place was better in so many ways.

"Yes, they bothered Gwen as well...and Arthur, I believe- at least that's how it seemed when I spoke with them over the PDA." He frowned considering it.

"I've read stories about myself that have been...grossly exaggerated, so I'm not too sure how much these tales are really true, if that helps."

"I tried to keep it from them, but I guess they were bound to find out. Like I said, they aren't right. Morgana is not evil, and -- and I'm not old obviously." He'd faltered because he couldn't say for sure that a lot of things in the stories wouldn't become true; Arthur and Gwen were engaged, Mordred, Lancelot...

"You have stories too? What are they about, or what do you do in them?" Merlin asked, pleased to hear it wasn't just him and his friends having this problem.

"Yet." Robin winked, then quickly noted. "Sorry, I'm only kidding! I mean...I can tell you more than a thing or two about my own stories that are near utter lies..."

Yes...stories, balleds- films, even. Robin shook his head. "Some of it's true...some of it's not. Mostly they tell tales about how I robbed from the richer classes to help the poor- which is true, though the details are always wrong."

Merlin smiled awkwardly, not appreciating the joke, but realizing he really hadn't meant anything by it. He had tried to stop worrying so much about the stories because he hoped they really didn't apply to them while they were here.

"Oh! I read a story about you when I was looking for stories about us, my friends I mean." Robin Hood had sounded familiar, and he recognized the story. "So you've met Gwen and Arthur already?"

He hadn't meant any sort of offense, merely to joke about their situation and the irony of such tales.

He'd read stories of him? An eyebrow raised before he gave the wizard a small nod. "Gwen, yes...Arthur? No. At least, not face to face. I actually gave Gwen an archery lesson only a few weeks ago- she's quite the natural talent with the bow. I was surprised, pleasantly so."
