WHO: Morgana and Arthur because she always has to be first :-P
WHERE: Sitting room of Arthur and Gwen's little house thingy
WHAT: Talking. Hugging? Awkward hugging! Be excited!
WHEN: Backdated to sometime after Arthur and Gwen's loveyness
STATUS: Closed/Incomplete
Ratings: TBD

Morgana wasn't quite certain about this so-called "universal truth" that Jane Austen spoke of. The words had brought a sardonic snort from the young woman at first, but as she continued to read the story, a small smile of amusment had managed to plant itself on her lips. She wasn't very sure about the truth behind the words but she could appreciate the humor. It was quite a sarcastic little phrase. And the main female of the story was quite a sassy little thing. Morgana found that she liked her. She liked Jane as well. She reminded Morgana of Gwen.

She'd bought the book on a lark, at one of the shops in the village. She'd always been one who enjoyed reading and that hadn't changed when she'd been thrust into the 21st century. Of course, sadly like many other things since going to the future, the amount of her reading had been lessened for being interested in other things. But it'd never been forgotten. In this era, she found that she had more time for it. Much more time for a lot of other things, she thought as she thought about her recent conversation with Gwen.

Morgana was sitting in the parlour, stockinged feet tucked under her, careful not to crease the dress that Merlin had altered for her.

She was waiting for Arthur to finish to talking to Gwen. Although he hadn't told her that was why their talk had been post-poned but she'd managed to figure out as much from her own conversation through the network with Gwen. She really hoped that the resolved the situation and that Arthur didn't make things worse. She had faith in her brother, whether he liked to believe it was something different, but she knew how he could be. It did help knowing that Gwen, ever loyal and wonderful Gwen, wouldn't leave him no matter what he ended up saying. Which would give him enough time to fix things if he did ... make them worse that is.

Though she wasn't so sure that he would. He'd grown a lot here. They all had. It was sad to see that their own personal growth had lead them to growing seperate, but Morgana was comforted by the fact that they would all fix that. She wouldn't allow it to be any other way.

The fact that Arthur had insisted that he still wanted to talk to her after speaking with Gwen, showed her that she (and Gwen) weren't the only ones who wanted to fix things. Hopefully, Merlin ended up feeling the same way. However, Morgana had a feeling that he would. None of them had changed that much. And Merlin was just as loyal as Gwen.

Attention moving back more fully away from the thoughts on people she cared about and back to the book, Morgana concentrated on Pride and Prejudice as she waited for Arthur.

It wasn't regret he was feeling, when he pulled himself away from Guinevere to find where Morgana had situated herself. He did wish to speak with Morgana. That wasn't the trouble. With another, gentler, kiss to Gwen's cheek, he left her. His shoes had been worn flat by Arthur the night before and didn't have that annoying click to their step that he'd never associated with anyone but women before. Arthur supposed he should be thankful the fashion wasn't as ridiculous as it could be, though why men took up the habit of wearing stockings still eluded comprehension.

He had been settling here. There was less adjustment needed to fit in with the average citizen unlike the older city, and carrying a sword no longer earned you odd looks and sarcastic whispers.

Morgana was, unsurprisingly, lounging in the next room over a book held casually in one hand and a look of deep concentration about her. Arthur slid into the room behind her, reaching for the book which he nabbed in a flash and flipped the cover back into place to find the title.

Morgana reared up quickly. She'd been just reading how Darcy was snubbing Elizabeth, when the book had been snatched from her hands. She barely stared at her empty hands for a second before turning around quickly in the direction the book had gone. Up and over her head. So she looked up, twisting in the overstuffed chair and glared at Arthur. "Give it back." She demanded.

Had she just thought a second ago that she wanted to see him and had been feeling as if she'd missed him. How wrong she had been. She must have been delusional ... feeling sympathetic for the childish idiot. It was just Gwen and Merlin that she missed. Arthur ... Arthur she'd pummel if he didn't give her book back to her.

Morgana prepared herself to grab it from him or to hop off the chair and sock him one, before taking it back, if he didn't listen to her direct order.

"Here." Arthur had been nice about it. His thumb was still marking the last page Morgana had been on, but if she was going to be like this about it, she could find her own way back to her page without his help. He tossed the book onto her lap and gripped the back of her chair with his freed hands.

"If you knew you were going to be busy, why did you agree to talk?"

Morgana glared at him for a moment, just for good measure, before calming herself, easily enough and saying, "Thank you, Arthur." She was irritated at him for loosing her page but she wasn't going to push the point. At the moment. Maybe later if he started being a pillock.

Placing the book onto the small table by the chair, she looked back up at him. "Did you expect me to sit and twiddle my thumbs until you decided to come here?" She arched her brow slightly. "I was just passing the time. The book can wait." She just didn't appreciate how he chose to have her make it wait. "I do want to talk to you." She said seriously, before a small smile quirked her mouth. "How did your previous talk go?" It was on the tip of her tongue to state Gwen's name. Because she was Morgana and she was pushy. And asking such a direct question, name and all would put the situation on the spot. However, she didn't want to put any unease into this conversation, yet. Not when it had barely started. So she left it, just the tiniest bit of open ended. To someone else it might not have been clear what she meant. But to Arthur, who ... well, he knew her as well as she knew him, didn't he?

Arthur smiled in a blithe manner to hide just how hard he was laughing at her. It didn't work entirely well, but it was forgivable. "You're welcome, Morgana."

He leaned forward, rocking her chair just an inch off its back legs before settling it again with an arched brow. Though, he never could quite get that disbelieving reach Gaius could. Had he expected her to sit there and twiddle her thumbs? Obviously not, even Merlin wasn't daft enough to believe Morgana could sit around idly for too long a period of time.

"You mean Guinevere hasn't managed to tell you yet." He doubted Guinevere had even thought to tell her yet, let alone found sense to type a reaction. "It went fine. Would I have come out here otherwise?"

It showed just how considerate that Morgana could be that she didn't just throw the book at his head. He was laughing at her. The brat.

Morgana gave him a Look that she didn't think needed an answer. In fact, she didn't think his casual comment deserved an answer. Instead she waited for him to continue. When she'd asked about the talk, she'd been expect a bit more than just 'fine'. Yes, she knew with whom she was dealing with but giving just a tiny bit more information wouldn't have killed him. At his question, Morgana considered him for a moment. "You would have came back." She said. As if that was that. "If I hadn't gone after you first, you would have came back. Though I admit you wouldn't have been in the mood to steal my book."

Arthur thought Morgana should have found that enough. She already knew. She was more than capable of reading between the lines of things he'd said and his actions thus far.

Having him say it out loud was not only redundant but irritating.
"Things were said and you can be reasonably assured that Gwen isn't going to come running and crying to you in the near future."

Things were said. Despite herself, she couldn't help smile. Even though she wanted to roll her eyes. Yes, she knew. Yes, she'd figured it out. "Good." Was all she said. Because he knew and she didn't have to say, that she would have been skewering him with her words if Gwen had come crying to her.

"Do you plan on looming over me throughout this conversation or are you going to sit down?"

"I don't loom." He wasn't looming. His father loomed, Geoffrey loomed, Arthur did not loom, he hovered in a faintly attractive manner.

This time Morgana did roll her eyes. "Fine, Arthur. You don't loom." She said, "My mistake. Allow me to correct myself. Do you plan on pestering my chair through out this entire conversation or are you going to sit down?"

Arthur shook her chair once out of petulance before throwing himself with very little grace or dignity onto another chair. He gestured expansively and scowled.

"Now that I'm sitting, what would you care to talk about."

"Why must you insist in acting like a brat? This is why you think that I comparing you to spoilt wine." She gave him another look for that one. Not as irritated and disbelieving as the first. More 'you're my little brother and one day I'm going to find out why you're so ... weird'. Because it was her duty, for her own piece of mind at least -- when he made it more difficult to just ignore his mods, to figure it out. Morgana had thousands of working theories. "Believe it or not, I wanted to spend some time with you." Why? She was starting to forget when he was scowling with all the indignation of a four year old at her. It was irritating.

"And I wanted to know if Merlin answered you." She added after a moment. After both their annoyed, snappish comments.

"If you're going to act like I want to destroy your sanity, I'm not about to disappoint you." Arthur leaned back in the chair and stretched his legs out far in front of him. Morgana might want to spend time with him, and that was fine with Arthur, but she didn't have to act so damn put upon about it.

"He did." Though Arthur continued to wonder if Merlin was hiding things from him even then. He already was a hypocritical fool. Pressuring Merlin further would only backfire in a brilliantly dismal way.

"It would take a lot more than you at your most determined to destroy my sanity." The words were light and the situation remained light because she refused to let it be anything it. Her tone was tart. The 'oh, please you wish' dripping from every syllable. "You give yourself too much credit, Arthur. I said you were a brat. Not responsible for my possible, but highly unlikely, future of graying hairs." In a more serious situation, she would have admited that any gray hair that ever had would be from seeing him dying. A situation so serious could only occur when she was at alone, with her own thoughts. Because she'd never tell that to Arthur. Or Gwen. Or Merlin. It would be in those moments alone she would comfort herself that she would less likely have to worry about gray hairs here if they stayed forever. Not because of her own vanity but because she wasn't constantly plagued with dreams of him drowning, being cut up, and thousands of other scenarios.

"And?" She wanted to stress the word, but she didn't. Instead she gave him a slightly arched look. She wanted to know if she had to worry about pummeling them both over the head to get them to properly talk to each other. Yes, she knew if the conversation had gone badly, Arthur would be sulking. However, other than having the sense to fall for Gwen and consider Merlin and Lancelot friends ... Arthur could be quiet obtuse over certain things. She would decide for herself if her meddling was needed or not.

"And, he gave his reasons, though they were hardly worth the trouble he put up to hide them from me." Arthur decided against bringing up his continued suspicions. Morgana didn't need to know them, because Arthur wasn't entirely sure they were well-founded. When it came to Merlin, everything was more complicated. Times came when he wondered why he even bothered hanging on to his concerns when Merlin didn't seem to appreciate them at all.

Pulling information from Arthur was likely more difficult than pulling feathers off of those winged creatures that made it their duty to attack Camelot on a bi-weekly basis. It would seem this was something that she would have to approach Merlin about. He was getting that look about him that said that he would likely start sulking if she pressed. Or, rather, in correction ... he would sulk some more. "Maybe to you." She said. "Whatever it is, could be something important to him and he wasn't ready or didn't feel the need to share it. Maybe he just wants some privacy , to keep his thoughts to himself. Whatever it is, I'm sure if he needed to, Merlin would tell you." Morgana knew that she was threading into unsteady grown with that. However, there wasn't anything more to say if she didn't know what Arthur, himself, was leaving out. And Morgana believed that. If Merlin felt that it was something pressing, the other man would share. Arthur needed to trust that. If it had something to do with Arthur, it was very likely that it was something too private for Merlin to share. Morgana worried-and wondered-if Merlin still held a flame for Gwen. That certainly wasn't something to share. Merlin was too noble and too good of a friend to let that come between his and Arthur, and his and Gwen's friendship. However, Morgana didn't think that was it.

"Morgana, did you forget he thought people were going to try and burn him alive? I know you believe I keep too much to myself, but even if I do, I don't explode about them publicly and without any justification."

Arthur could explode, had done so before, but never in a way that made people want to immediately reassure him he wasn't about to die. He didn't function that way. No sane person should. Living day to day with one eye over your shoulder was the worst kind of paranoia and Arthur had lived with it since his childhood and seen how it twisted people into something hard and unfeeling.

"I can't remember him being this frustratingly closed-mouthed when we were at home. In fact, I can't remember a time when he would shut up for more than a few minutes. What happened?"

Arthur asked the last question more to himself than Morgana and stood in a jerking rush of motion that set him off to pace without pause.

She hadn't forgotten. Morgana frowned slightly, wondering just what was going on in Merlin's head. She imagined that he was upset over something. What exactly, she wasn't sure. It had startled her, Merlin's outburst. She had thought about the dangers of this time but she hadn't realized the fear affected him. He'd managed to keep his secret under Uther's nose. She didn't know why he felt that he couldn't in this time. Why he worried that they couldn't protect him. She couldn't help but feel that it was something else. Or even that there was something more upsetting Merlin. She didn't say as much to Arthur because it would only frustrate him more. Because why else wouldn't he have told either herself or Gwen if he didn't wnat to share it with Arthur. In fact, Gwen would have been the perfect candidate. Merlin was closer to her and surely he knew that Gwen would keep his secrets. However, although Gwen didn't say as much, Morgana had the feeling that she knew just as much as they did. Which, in her case was a bit less than Arthur but still, was nothing.

Morgana watched as he paced. Not having an answer and not liking that fact. Arthur had a point. Which had her worrying. More for both him and Merlin. She doubted he would be she needed to at least try to get the other man to talk to her. For her own peace of mind and for as much of Arthur's as she could.

She hesitated before coming to a decision. Pushing to her feet, she came behind him putting a gentle yet firm hand on his shoulders. Morgana didn't give herself a chance to hesitate again as she walked in front of him, just a bit, before sliding her arms around him and wrapping them tightly. Yes, she was hugging him. The last time they'd hugged was when Arthur was seeking to comfort her after a horrific nightmare had found her pounding at his door. She was perfectly capable of returning the favor. She didn't say it enough, but she loved him. He was her brother in all the ways that mattered. Morgana hated seeing himself this upset. Usually she was pushing him the next step to do what he had to do, but in this case, he'd done the next step on his own and it hadn't ended very well. She didn't know in which direction to push him in this instance but she was capable of being their for him.

"I don't understand him. I don't-" Arthur spun on his heels, fists clenching and head bowed. How did Merlin manage to get under his skin and stay there? He was like an illness, or a defect, something you should have been able to get rid of but you can't and then it begins to define who you are, and no one had done that before.

It shamed him to admit how much Merlin meant to him, and how little he told him anything, while asking for everything in return. There were moments, small ones, that Arthur let himself wonder what would happen if he opened himself to Merlin more than he had. Would they even be dancing around one another like they were doing now.

He never saw Morgana stand, but he couldn't ignore her when she touched his shoulder. His spine straightened in reaction. Here was another one of his many failings presenting itself before him. Morgana knew him longest and in many ways best, but for all the secrets they kept from one another, they were as good as strangers. She was his sister in all but blood, but she knew less about him now than Guinevere did. And Guinevere had disliked him the longest of everyone.

"What are you doing?" he asked, arms hanging uselessly at his side as she hugged him tight. His cheek grazed the top of her head, resting there for a brief second or so, long enough for her to feel it, but not long enough to make something of it. When it became obvious she wasn't going to let go, he slowly wound his arms around her shoulder and pulled her in close, unable to make sense of really anything.

It had been on the tip of her tongue to say 'returning the favor'. However, that was the wrong thing to say. It wasn't that Morgana never said the wrong thing. She did. However, she more often than not said the right thing. Usually when she wasn't supposed to, sometimes when she was, but there it was. With Arthur she tended to have that luck. However, that tended to involve telling him what to do, which tended to be very obvious to her. Never really about what she was feeling. They didn't go into that. Her family didn't touch that, unless they were at the brink. At times not even then. Nevertheless, right now the right thing seemed appropriate. Yet Morgana wasn't quite sure what to say. Oh, she had responses but none of it pretained to the what which would lead to a why. Which she wasn't one hundred percent sure on.

"I'm hugging you, Arthur." Sarcastic but he would have noticed that it lacked some of her typical bite. "I would have thought that much would be obvious." Her breath caught slightly at the brief moment he rested his cheek on her head, however, he barely gave her enough time to point it out without making it seem as if she was pushing an issue. Morgana tightened her arms around him.

Laughter erupted at the answer he received, laughter so large it shook his shoulders and forced him to bury his face in her hair and wonder at how they managed to become this incapable at sharing any sort of emotional responsibility. He would have loved to blame it on his childhood and having a too distant and firm father, but his nursemaids had been more than kind and generous to him to make up for that deficit.

No, they were just incapable of it.

"Thank you, Morgana. I might never have known otherwise."

She gave him an irritated look but despite her best efforts she couldn't quite manage to hold on to it. He was laughing. At least he was no longer sulking or upsetting himself. Which wasn't so bad if she had to say so herself. Not to mention, she found herself smiling.

Rolling her eyes, she answered, "You're welcome, Arthur. I wouldn't have wanted you to miss it. A little clarification seemed to be in order." The amusement was very clear in her tone as she attempted to hold back her own laughter.

"Yes, I can see why you would think so."

Arthur leaned back a way, hands sliding around to grip her upper arms. She had always seemed tinier than him, but she wasn't, not by that much, and now that he was staring at her, tracing the amusement etched across her face with his eyes, he was baffled as to how he ever thought otherwise.

"This was all an ill-concealed plot to get me to hug you, wasn't it?"

She made a face at him at his first comment, before her brow rose, watching him as he watched her. She was about to ask him what exactly was he staring at when he asked his question.

"Oh, yes, Arthur. I have been sitting these past few days feeling as if my life was missing something. It occurred to me that what that something was, was a hug from you." She said sarcastically, before giving him a firm pinch to the side. If one thought about the reality of the matter-someone that wasn't a stubborn Pendragon child-they could have pointed out that the two of them could have done with a bit more hugging in their relationship. "Ill-concealed. I'll have you know that I wouldn't be capable of forming an ill-concealed plan even if I tried." She commented archly. "And you know what I'm capable of when I put my mind to it." Some would say that Morgana was quite capable of scary things even when she wasn't trying hard. But that was no matter. Maybe.

Arthur jerked and glowered at her pinch. She had brutally long nails. He let her go fully and stepped back out of her reach, folding his arms. The moment was gone for now, and Arthur was not ungrateful for that. Everything and everyone had been tense over the past few weeks, and this conversation had begun to feel like a further extension of that strange stress.

Morgana blinked slightly in surprise at the kiss on the forehead. However, she had done it all so quickly one could have thought that they imagined it, for she was smiling-albeit a bit smugly, a touch haughtily-when she answered him, "Because it gets things done." She said with a soft sniff, before smiling at him. "It's only annoying to those who aren't as skilled as I am."

Stepping away from him just a step, she looked up at him, "We should spend more time together." It wasn't a suggestion. Morgana was getting them one by one. Though to be fair, Gwen had found her first.
