Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:castiel, john constantine

Who: John Constantine, OTA (Possibly tag Castiel? Sorry for the delay!)
What: John finding his way about town
When: Backdated about a day, evening
Where: Wandering the city, towards the housing area
Warnings: Likely at least PG-13 for John's mouth. Possibly more.
NOTE: John is slightly psychic, and also probably hung over. He may be a bit surly at first- and any psychic activity in his direction might compound it. Not that I mind in the slightest! Just so you know :)

Well, this was a new one, wasn't it? John had done some seriously strange things in his life- he had been to Eden, been to Hell and back. But a new planet?

Of course, he didn't really believe it. It wasn't possible- at least, not in the strictly science-fiction sense. But... not that he would ever admit it aloud, mind, but John was seriously enjoying entertaining the idea of being the Doctor, in his mind. The idea of being on a new planet was... kind of intriguing.

And, like most things in his life right now, it wasn't prison. And that was automatically a point in its favor.

"C'mon, c'mon..." John's hand rummaged around the pocket of his trench, earning a near-blissful sound when he finally found what he was looking for. He rolled the filter of the blessed cancer stick around between his lips, removing the lint before pulling out the lighter...

That wasn't there.

"Fuck me," John muttered, looking around the street to try and find someone with a light. Yeah, yeah- he was supposed to be making his way to the bedsit. He'd get there. After he got his fix.

A man back from Hell. John Constantine would be the third Dean had met. The first Castiel had retrieved himself. The second father to the first.
Not for a moment did the angel think this in any way prepared him for meeting another. Hell was not a place meant to be survived. Humans were not meant to be equipped to return to life after that and yet both Dean and his father had returned with their minds and their compassion intact. Shaken but still themselves.

Castiel could only marvel at the resilience of humans.

He was not brilliant at reading people but he knew this John Constantine was troubled, likely more so than Dean had been. Castiel had seen Hell for himself. It had been almost enough to paralyse him and he had known he could leave.

He was most interested in the circumstance of this Constantine's return. He had heard the name before, whispers. John Constantine had gotten Heaven's attention but Castiel had never been privy to the details of his case.
This only served to make him more curious.

Castiel had no trouble finding John now he had his name. He walked up behind him, heard him swear. Castiel flicked his hand and the tip of the cigarette bloomed into firery life. "Hello John Constantine," the angel Castiel said from over his shoulder.

To his credit, John's flinch at the sudden flame in his cigarette only lasted a second. He turned on his heel, giving the man- or at least, man-shaped-being- a look over, a habit born from his recent months in prison. The man didn't look overtly threatening. Perhaps had a familiar choice of overcoat, but at least he had more style than the last snob John had met.

"That'd make you Castiel, then? Or am I just that much've a celebrity, already?" He took a long draw off of his cigarette, looking past Castiel down the street to make sure it was just the two of them; at least for now. "Nice trick, by the way." He waved his cigarette in example, tapping the ash off as he went.

"It is not a trick. My Father controls the elements, my power is of Him," Castiel said pragmatically. He pressed his hands into his coat pockets. John Constantine appear to be an average middle-ages man but he did not feel like one. Hell had left it's mark in him, a mark Castiel was not sure even John was aware of not to Castiel it was like a breath of ice rushing over his soul. He did not flinch.

"I am Castiel," he confirmed. He took another moment to simply take in the man. Castiel titled his head as he studied him. "I know you have seen Hell. What do you know of Heaven?" It was Castiel's experience many more people had seen, and so believed in, demons while few had any experience of angels. Constantine, however, had accepted him as an angel in a casual attitude that Castiel almost never encountered. Castiel strongly suspected he was not the first angel John Constantine had met.

John rolled his eyes at the response- another one of those then. At least Gabriel had been a little more down-to-Earth (pardon the pun) when John had known him. The blind devotion gag didn't sit well with John, but he wasn't really sober enough, or on good enough footing, to try and piss this Castiel off. So he held his tongue as much as he could.

Excuse John, but the question of Hell earned a bark of laughter he just couldn't hold back. "What do I know, squire? I ain't gonna be seein' it any time soon, for one. 'Much more concerned with things already makin' a move on my life- ain't interested in fightin' both fronts. S'how people lose, that is." John had plenty of experience with demons- he'd gone up against the First of the Fallen, given him a nice little zing. Enough so that John was officially a target of Hell, in literally the worst way. There was no chance he would be making it to Heaven, when he died.

Frankly, if all the angels were like the ones he'd met, he couldn't say he was all that disappointed.

"What d'you know of humans, then? Not often you hear of one of you lot walkin' 'round with the little people,"

Fighting on both fronts. Castiel lowered his head for a moment. "I do not think it is a matter of being interested," Castiel said, his tone contained, "It is merely a matter of doing what must be done." His eyes pieced John's gaze. "I do not think anyone would chose that."

He tipped his head a little. "I also do not think it is for you to know where you will spend eternity. Unless you have promised you soul to Hell there is no guarantee you will reside there. Many a human has died under that assumption and been subsequently proved wrong." It was not about reassuring, merely about correcting a misconception.

Castiel's expression became lighter and more thoughtful at the next question.
"Human's are remarkable. They suffer and they see every horror the darkness holds and still they can teach me about honour." Castiel was thinking of a specific human. "They have their flaws but my kind are not immune to those and I do not regret my decision, they are worth saving," he said his voice confident. "They are also very curious," he added. "They often say what they do not mean and do not say the thing that they do. They can be inefficient. It is sometimes difficult to follow them but I am learning."

"Aye, the First thinks he got my soul for himself, when I die. A bit of a dosh with avengin' a friend, curin' my cancer. Thought your lot would've heard that one." He took another drag from his cigarette, leaning back against the near wall. "Then again, 'way I heard it, me dyin' might bring the Three down on their head. Could score one for you. 'Last big mystery, eh?" He shrugged, honestly as nonchalant about the whole thing as he appeared; he'd given up worrying about eternity. He found it was a lot easier to put off reaching his death, if he just didn't think about it.

The spiel about humans being 'remarkable' made John's face sour, eyes cutting into Castiel's. "You ain't been on our side for long, 'ave you? I'll give you a hint- humans can deal with a lotta things, but we ain't interested in bein' your science project. F'you're here to pick me brain like 'at, you can just keep walking." He muttered something to himself about snobs, smoke wafting out of his nose with the exhale.

The First? Is he speaking of Lucifer?. "I was not privy to the specifics of your circumstances," Castiel admitted. "I was assigned elsewhere." So he had made a deal. Even so, Dean had also made one and his soul was now firmly back in his Father's grasp. "It is too soon to know your destination," was all Castiel had to say on that matter. The rest was between this man and their God.

"I think you may be mistaken. I am not keeping Heaven's score and my side consists of my Father, my sister and three humans. You are also correct in that I have only been on Earth for a short time. It had been a year since I retrieved Dean from Hell, that is where my mission began." Then he frowned. "I do not require your assistance in interacting with this world, I am more interested in your experience with mine however you are under not obligation to speak to me." Then the angel gave a tiny half smile. "You sound like Dean," he said. He found himself hoping he was not ordered away.

He was having trouble understanding some of the terms Constantine was using. "Who do you mean by the Three?"

John just rolled his eyes. Whatever let the angel keep his little worldview intact, he supposed. It wasn't any skin off his back. Most of that would be going to the First eventually, he supposed. He was more than willing to take his fate up with God, if he ever- She ever worked up the nerve to show her face.

He pulled more smoke from his cigarette, to avoid the thoughts of that loon. Really, God as a bird might explain a lot, but that didn't make it easier for John to digest.

The little flash of indignation actually caught John's interest. Maybe this Castiel had a spine after all. John seemed to listen a little more intently while he spoke, frowning in thought. "So... you defected? Or get tossed out on one'a those 'go native' missions I 'eard about? Fat lotta good it did Gabriel," He shook his head, idly wondering who this 'Dean' was, but guessing he was supposed to know, somehow.

The last question, however, made him flinch. "What d'you mean? The Three. First, Second, and Third've the Fallen. 'Triumvirate. Whatever you wanna call 'em. Right pissed the lot of 'em off, last I saw. Where do you lot go when you die, anyhow?" Despite being something of an arrogant prick, John didn't really sound like he was bragging. Frankly, thinking back on the whole ordeal made him a bit uneasy. But the guy was asking, and he was frankly a lot more comfortable with that side of the conversation, than the other.

"They were wrong," Castiel began. "They were not following my Father's path. They were trying to bring on the apocalypse. I could not let that happen. I had to try. I could not leave Dean to them. I could not leave the world to them. Most of them had no love for Father's creation, they see it only as an inconvenience now it has fallen to them. They are wrong. That is not what it is." He swallowed, his shoulders tense.

"The orders I believed were from my Father were not. I could only defy them. I must remain true to my Father. It is why I exist, to serve His will. Also, I have come to care for the humans in my charge. I do not want their world taken from under them."

He dropped his eyes, it was still difficult to talk about, to lay it all out, but he was not ashamed. He did not feel compelled to hide it.

Then Castiel's head shot up, his attention riveted. "Gabriel? You have seen my brother? Impossible. He has been lost to us for two thousand years. Where did you see him? How?"
A long pause.
"Is he safe?"

He was starting to get the impression, at least from the way the stories were clashing, that either a) they were talking about two completely separate groups of beings, or b) this guy was completely off his nut. Of course, there was always the ever-popular c) John had finally lost it... but he would have thought that would have happened in prison, not after. He took another drag from his cigarette, mulling over the information in his mind before trying to answer.

"I don't know about all this 'they' shite, squire. Never really been part of a 'they', 'less you count the human 'they'. Even then, though, s'only a courtesy title, mostly." He shrugged off the rest of the first conversation, instead intrigued by Castiel's reaction to Gabriel's name.

"What d'you mean, lost for two-? 'Was in the bloody Cambridge Club, long as I knew 'im." He winced, then, looking down to the ground. "Snob deserved what he got, an' don't think you can tell me different," Despite the slight wave of guilt he felt at the memory; trapping Gabriel as he had, cutting his heart out, making him mortal. Trading him to Lucifer for his life. It was what had to be done. It was Gabriel's fault, for getting caught, for going insane. He believed that much, at least.

"The they I refer to are my siblings. They have, many of them, strayed from the path. They have begun to put themselves first. They have lost faith in our Father. You are not a part of that group, no, though you are closer to them than most in that you have seen at least two of us. In that you have had your name spoken in Heaven."

Castiel's expression turned worried. "What do you mean he deserved what he got? What did he get? Is he safe?" It would take a lot to injure Gabriel, a power far greater than Castiel possessed. So what force had this man witnessed? How had he made Constantine angry enough to pass such a judgement on him? "I need to know what happened," he insisted.

"Made meself a real cautionary tale, ain't I? Glad t'see someone's havin' a laugh," John shook his head, blowing off the last of his cigarette and flicking the ashes aside.

He had to keep going, didn't he? God (and wasn't that the irony?) John really didn't want to get into that. "You don't want t'know, squire. I don't think we're talkin' bout the same bloke, anyhow." The Gabriel he knew was human- at least last he saw.

Seeing Castiel wasn't going to relent, he went down the highlights of the story. How a demoness (a friend of John's, although he left that off) had cut out Gabriel's heart. How they had held the heart, and used it to trade for a weapon to kill the First of the Fallen.

"Bloke's wanderin' 'round mortal, last I saw." He shrugged it off, sure that news wasn't going to be taken well.
