WHO: Conner & Merlin.
WHAT: Christmas time is here! Conner goes on a hot chocolate run.
WHEN: Christmas Morning.
WHERE: Coffee shop.
RATING: PG-13.

Hot chocolate.

At the moment, nothing mattered more than hot chocolate. It was Christmas Day and Conner Kent needed some hot chocolate. It distracted him from the lack of presents and family he was sorely not surrounded by. Maybe he would buy some DVDs and junk food and veg out. It was an appealing thought.

He slipped his hands into his coat and contemplating speeding to the shop he usually got his hot chocolate fix, but he quickly decided that a brisk walk would be better to clear his mind. Glancing both ways on the street, he quickly crossed it and stepped onto the sidewalk.

Making his way into the little coffee shop, he wondered what he should have with said hot chocolate. Did they have blueberry scones? Or maybe a croisant. So many choices. He grinned and waited in line.

Merlin backed into the door of the coffee shop, readjusting the grocery bags in his arms, and stumbling into line. He'd been running around all morning getting everything they would need for Christmas. He wanted to surprise Gwen and Arthur, wanted Morgana and Lancelot to come so they'd all spend the holiday together. But right now he was cold, his nose was red, and he needed hot chocolate. Why? Because it was easily the best creation since -- ever.

Clumsy as ever, Merlin stepped on his shoe laces, and fell forward into the person in line in front of him. "Ah! Sorry, I - " He managed to catch himself enough not to spill the bags of food all over the floor, then reached forward to brush the snow off Conner's shoulders some of which had fallen from his own coat. "Sorry again -- tripped. Are you alright?"

This would make it now the second time in 24 hours that he was assaulted from behind by an English dude. At least this one was nice about it. And! On the up side, this time it wasn't his fault. "It's all good," he said as he finished brushing off the snow from his shoulders and threw the lanky guy a glance. Just to make sure he hadn't dropped everything.

"I'll make do, no vital organs were pierced or anything." He smiled, a bit, and noticed the bags. He wished he knew how to cook. Maybe he should add that to his list of Things To Do While Waiting to Return Home. "Stressful day?" he asked and motioned toward the bags of groceries.

"Oh. Okay, good." Merlin smiled awkwardly, glancing around as well to make sure he hadn't dropped anything. Nothing that he could see, and then the stranger continued. "Stress? No, not really. It's just almost everyone is closed today, and I forgot to buy things for breakfast. I got most of it though, and needed hot chocolate for the walk back."

There was plenty of time. It was early enough that he could enjoy his drink on the walk back. None of his friends were probably even awake yet, and wouldn't be for a little while. He couldn't wait to cook too. He enjoyed it, and cooking for Morgana, Arthur, Gwen, and Lancelot...He hoped it turned out okay. He'd been practicing at work all week. "I'm glad this shop is open. It has the best hot cocoa."

"Agreed," he replied with a nod and a happy little sigh as he smelled the glorious smell of the hot chocolate. "There is nothing that can't be solved with a cup of hot chocolate." He cleared his throat and wore a sheepish grin. "The English might have tea but in America we have hot chocolate."

Another customer down! A few more to go. He took a step forward. "I'm Conner," he said, by the way and made as if to shake Merlin's hand but then remembered the bags-o-plenty and offered him a small wave instead. "Nice to meet you." Who would've thought? Another hot chocolate enthusist?

"Tea?" He hadn't tried that yet. "Is it like hot chocolate?" Tea wouldn't be introduced to Britain for centuries after Camelot was gone. Merlin had been too taken with hot chocolate to bother trying anything else. He'd attempted coffee once, but it -- it wasn't a good thing. Too much energy for him, he was already pretty excitable.

"I'm Merlin." He smiled, shifting the bags again to offer a wave in return. He needed a free hand for the drink anyways. "Good to meet you too."

"Dude, seriously?" He grinned. "Your mom have a Thomas Mallory obsession?" He paused, tilting his head. "That's kind of fucking awesome." Of course, he couldn't really relate. Conner sounded the most like Kon-El. Plus, Conner had a sneaking suspicion that Clark liked initial patters. I mean. Lana Lang. Lois Lane. ....Lex Luthor.

Conner wore his infections grin, bobbed his head a little as he took in the name. "MERLIN. I like it."

He scrunched his nose, though, as he thought about tea. See, Conner doesn't always think linearly. He gets distracted easily. "Ugh. Back to the tea. Don't try it. It's like water. With food coloring and bitterness." Conner shook his head. "It's a travesty." He paused. "But if you throw some lemon and honey, sometimes it makes it better." He paused. "Or at least that's what Martha says, anyway."

"Malory? No." He didn't like that book so much. It had Morgana trying to kill Arthur, Gwen cheating with Lancelot, and the druid boy, Mordred, being the one to kill Arthur in the end. It was the first time someone just assumed he was normal though, just named after the old character. Which was nice, he almost didn't want to correct him, but Merlin was a wretched liar most of the time. "No, ah - Malory had an obsession with Arthur and I."

He laughed softly as his name was repeated with a little more emphasis. "Thanks."

Tea sounded ghastly. Lemon and honey in hot water maybe, but bitter colored water? "I see. I'll stick with hot chocolate. I can't imagine wanting to get anything else anyways." Merlin didn't mind the non-linear line of thought. He was still able to follow, being easily distracted himself.

Normally, Conner would pay attention but he was now just one person away from the barista, which meant only one person was standing in the way of him and chocolate bliss! So, for a moment, he zoned out and thought about whether he should ask for whipped cream and completely missed Merlin's bit about Mallory's obsession over he and his friend. Which he kind of felt bad about but he wasn't about to make him say it again, so he jumped in at the second bit of their conversation.

"I think that is a wicked idea," he said with an emphatic nod and a happy sigh. The only thing he needed was some good chinese or maybe a pizza. If Cassie, Bart, and Tim were here they'd probably want both. Martha probably would've made them pie. God, he hoped Martha was okay. With Jonathan gone, Conner was the only thing she had. Especially with Clark gone.

Conner's face shifted a little and he became distracted that he almost didn't notice that he was up next. It took the angry barista's sharp "NEXT!" to bring him back to reality, so he could make his order: a hot chocolate with whipped cream and cinnamon.

Merlin laughed again as the woman behind the counter snapped at Conner. He didn't mind that the other missed the comment about him and Arthur. One less person to ask him about the stories. Were they true, where was his beard, could he make brooms clean to music...Merlin liked Conner, he was funny, and shared his love for hot chocolate. Which naturally meant he was a good guy, right?

He moved forward when it was his turn and ordered the same thing minus the cinnamon. Taking his receipt, Merlin moved over to wait for his drink. In the mean time he set his bags down on the nearest table, and turned back to the brunette. "Are you doing anything for Christmas? I'm still not sure what all the traditions are, but it sounds like fun."

Merlin had bought gifts last week, and Gwen had decorated the tree. They could cook, watch the stuff that was supposed to be on tv, he'd think of other things. He still had a chess set in his room that he'd bought to play with Severus.

"Horror movie fest and pizza," he said after a few moments, "maybe even some chinese." He forced a smile. "I like Christmas. The lights. The cheer. I can get over the holiday music, but it's probably one of the few times of the year people go out of their way to be nice." Sometimes. Sometimes people are horribly rude because they're bitter. Those guys deserved coal.

"What're you up to?" he asked as he leaned against the counter and grinned. "Have a special girl you want to snuggle up to?" He paused. "Or guy. Y'know. Whatever floats your boat."

"That sounds...interesting." Horror movies didn't really seem to fit the typical practice. Weren't the movies supposed to be happy, and all about giving or whatever? Not that he was one to put down other people's traditions. "This is my first Christmas. It's kind of like the Solstice we celebrated back home. I like it too. Especially the lights, and other decorations."

His ears and cheeks flushed a faint pink at the suggestion of snuggling up with a 'special guy' and shook his head. His only romantic interests weren't very likely, and he'd kept himself too busy to really think about it since coming here. "No, I -- Not snuggling. I'm spending the day with my friends. There are a few of us here. Do you have -- someone special?"

"The lights are my favorite," he said with a soft smile. "It's kind of beautiful really." He tilted his head. "I had a friend who said once that the Christmas lights at night were a nice metaphor for the darkness. A way to shine through and show the way." He shook his head and chuckled. "Personally, I just like how they look from high up. It's like look at the sky at night. Bright twinkling lights stretched out for as far as you can see and in all sorts of colors." He chuckled. "They make me happy."

The blush was interesting. It meant he wasn't out, he did have a special someone and hadn't said anything, or he was a geek who hadn't gotten laid in ever. Either way, it was amusing. "That's nice," Conner said and brightened when they handed him his hot chocolate." The mention of someone special made him think of Tim and Cassie. He slowly shook his head, though.

"No," he said simply and took a sip of his hot chocolate. Time to savor.

That was a nice expression, he would share that with Gwen later. She would appreciate it. His eyes went a little wide at the idea of seeing them from high up. It must be amazing. The lights down here fascinated him, imagine seeing them going all the way to the horizon. "Where did you see them from? How high up? I would like to see all the lights like that."

"No one from your world is here?" Obvious sympathy found its way across his features. Spending the holiday alone wasn't acceptable. "You should come over. Have dinner with us or something for a little while at least. There will be hot chocolate."

Merlin took his cup, taking a small drink of it while waiting for Conner to agree. No really wasn't an option. He supposed the other could just promise to think about it, but Merlin wanted to make sure the option was there. "We will be in 101C, all day probably. All kinds of food, some movies, and some company."

He wasn't sure if he could talk about flying in the air. Not many people could handle that kind of thing. "High," he said simply with an amused smile.

He shook his head. "No." He paused. "I mean. There's...this guy but I don't think he's my guy." He paused cause that sounded weird. "Like someone I knew, I mean. Not like." His eyes widen. "There's really no way to make that sound any better," he said with a chuckle.

Oh, wow. That was terribly nice. "Um." He rubbed the back of his neck and blushed a little. He wasn't sure if he wanted to do that. He didn't really know him and it would be awkward. "Um. Maybe." He cleared his throat. "Thanks for the offer."

Merlin listened, more then a little confused as Conner tried to explain. Someone from his world but not? After a minute or so he figured may it was like someone from a different version of his world. Like the old man version of himself from the stories rather then himself. That made sense right? That was the best he could come up with, and even if it wasn't right he was going to assume and leave it at that. "I think I get it, don't worry. But basically, no one to share it with."

He smiled again. Maybe Arthur was right, he was a little too trusting. Merlin preferred to think of it as friendly. "You really should. If you get bored, come by okay?" He didn't like people being alone, and it seemed especially wrong on the solstice, on christmas.

Conner took another sip of his hot chocolate before he nodded slowly. "If I get bored," he said. "I'll stop by." He grinned softly. "Maybe if you're lucky, I'll show you those lights."

He motioned toward Merlin's bags. "Hopefully you don't have anything that'll go bad, right?"

Merlin brightened considerably at the idea of being brought someplace high enough to see the lights. "Great! I'll make you hot chocolate, and I'm making cookies. You can have some of those too, if you like. Or dinner, we'll have a big supper."

He glanced to the bags and shook his head. "No, nothing that will go bad. I should probably start back though. I want to have breakfast started before everyone wakes up." Merlin took another gulp of his drink, lifting the bags back up in one arm.

Conner chuckled. "How can a man resist hot chocolate?" He shrugged, though. "If I can find it in me to tear myself away from the dismemberment and decapitation and pepperoni, I'll stop by." He liked this kid. He reminded him of a less hyper Bart.

"You're a good friend," he said. "I hope they appreciate all of it."

"They do." He nodded, sure that they all appreciated what he did, even if they didn't always say so. Merlin enjoyed doing it too, seeing his friends happy. Even if things were a little strained now and then.

"Hopefully I'll see you later. If not I'm sure I'll run into you here again sometime." Merlin figured he should probably go. Glancing to the other bag still sitting on the table, to his hot chocolate, and deciding he'd attempt having it float along beside him again. (Even if it didn't work so well last time) The bag rose and hovered at his side, beneath the other bags.

Super powers. Neat. He offered him a smile and a nod. "I'll see you. Be safe." He paused. "I'm in 201A." He shrugged. "If you're ever bored or whatever." Was Conner making a new friend? Cassie would be proud. Tim would, no doubt, be suspicious. And Bart would be super excited. But chips made Bart super excited, too.

He sped up and opened the door for Merlin to make life a little easier, offered him a wave, and set out in the opposite direction to figure out what he was going to do next. After all, if he was going to do the horror movie thing, he might need movies.

"You too." Merlin would have to remember to write the number down later so he could visit Conner some other time. "I'm in 110C." Merlin was always pleased with making new friends, but it wasn't a strange thing for him. He was naturally pretty friendly.

"Thank you." He offered pleasantly, managing a little wave before setting off towards the housing buildings. So far, it was a good morning, and he did look forward to seeing Conner again. If not later today, then some other time.
