WHO: Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones.
WHAT: Because they really haven't seen each other. And they need to be sure they're 'okay'. Yes, okay. And talk about Tosh, too.
WHERE: Jack & Ianto's Flat
WHEN: Evening; 5 June
RATING: TBA - I'd guess high...
STATUS: Active

Somehow, Jack hadn't seen much of Ianto since arriving. Jack was, at present, trying to figure out what the hell this place was. Which was why he spent hours upon days wandering around and trying to find out anything. Not having the Hub to return to was grating and there was only so much he could do by way of calculations between his Wrist Strap and the PDA.

Bone weary and exhausted, Jack finally found his way back to the flat. He wasn't sure how long he'd been wandering about -- but long enough that he'd been away for longer than he should have. Between his wanderings and Ianto working, they hadn't seen each other much. Which was, in Jack's estimation, a damn shame. Still reeling from seeing Toshiko's messages, Jack wasn't sure what to think. Sure, he could play the calm, cool and collected -- but he was, however, in a state of shock.

There was no way. None.

Wanting nothing more than to see Ianto, Jack opened the door to the flat and, without paying any attention to where he was going -- fell onto the couch in a boneless mass.

Off his feet. At last.

Ianto was making coffee, as was his coping mechanism. He'd come home from his job at one of the city's museums, begging off early, when he had seen that Tosh was around. It was too soon after the mess that was the mission in Switzerland. He didn't remember much of what happened in the tunnel, but the aliens pretending to be Tosh and Owen and Lisa still scared him to think about, knowing the alien had been in his head like that.

He heard the door open, and leaned against the counter with a tired sigh before finishing making two cups of coffee and taking them over to the couch. He and Jack had been busy, and he had missed the other man. Sitting next to him, he offered one of the cups of coffee, not saying anything. The silence was comfortable, not the sorts of oppressive silences that had stretched between then in the wake of Lisa or Gray. He just need this, the reaffirmation of Jack's presence, to give him some measure of peace.

The first thing Jack smelled was coffee brewing. That set a smile to his face that wouldn't easily be wiped away. He breathed in the scent of coffee, knowing before he tasted it that it would be just the way he liked it: strong enough to strip paint and still be used to jumpstart the SUV. Jack closed his eyes while he waited for the coffee, allowing himself that brief moment of rest before Ianto came in.

He shifted enough to make room for Ianto, half tempted to toss his legs over the other man's lap. As it was, however, he pulled himself into a sitting position and took the offered cup, taking a sip and damn near groaning as the liquid ran down his throat. Best damn taste in the world -- well, almost. Jack took another drink, watching Ianto closely, worried about his lover, remembering everything that had happened in Switzerland.

"How are you, Ianto?" he asked softly, realising just how often he said those same words to Ianto in the face of crisis.

As it was, Ianto was glad that Jack didn't just toss his legs over his lap. The coffee was hot, and he really didn't want to spill it. He smiled slightly to himself, seeing the way Jack enjoyed the drink. He knew how much Jack loved his coffee, and it made him feel almost happy, that he could give Jack something to make him feel a little better.

He sipped his own coffee, closing his eyes with a sigh. It was odd, finding something as simple as coffee reassuring, but he did. He set the coffee cup on the table in front of the sofa and shifted closer to Jack, just resting his head against his lover's shoulder.

"I'm fine sir," he said out of reflex, then frowned. "Actually...I'm really not. But it will pass. I'm happy that Tosh is alive, I really am, but it makes no sense. And I can't help thinking that maybe it isn't really her."

The coffee was hot and fixed to absolute perfection -- not that Jack expected anything but from Ianto. He didn't need to say anything, he knew the nearly orgasmic expression on his face spoke volumes as to how good the coffee was. Still, there was the nagging in the back of his mind, knowing full well that the coffee was only the momentary distraction from the true topic at hand.

The moment Ianto leaned in, Jack abandoned his own cup of coffee, setting it aside and draping an arm around his lover's shoulders to draw him in closer. He was about to ask for the real answer to his question when Ianto continued on without prompting. "It doesn't make any sense, other than she seems to be from a different time than the rest of us. I asked her and she said the last thing she remembered was Gwen's wedding. You know as well as I that anything is possible, but it seems like there should be a paradox building."

Jack's proximity and the physical contact helped ease some of the anxiety that had been plaguing him since Toshiko had showed up. He knew that it was ridiculous to be so bothered, having seen plenty of people show up who said they had been dead, but he couldn't help his own reactions. He had only just begun to accept that Owen and Toshiko were dead, and now seeing her again was like a punch to the gut.

"I think this entire place is like some weird paradox," Ianto said, shifting closer so that he was pressed against his lovers side in what could be considered cuddling. "There have been other people here who said they had been dead, but it's different when it's someone you know that shows up." He sighed. "I just want to get home. I worry about Gwen, alone in Cardiff. She's probably worked herself up into a state by now."

Jack, however, understood where the anxiety was coming from and was relieved that he could at least get Ianto to talk. That was the one frustrating thing about the Welsh: they tended to repress far too often. Jack had, over the years, gotten used to that fact but it didn't make talking easy.

Not that Jack was one to open up either. He liked to think he'd been getting better over the past few months, at least where Ianto was concerned. Hell, he had told him all about Michael, hadn't he? He was working on it.

"Never thought I'd say this, but I worry Gwen's about to tear into my hide after leaving again -- when I promised you lot that I wouldn't leave without written permission ever again." Jack drew Ianto in against his body, turning so that his back was against the arm rest and Ianto could crawl into his arms if he wanted that much contact. "Here I thought you'd be used to the dead coming back," Jack said, attempting levity and knowing he picked the wrong area to kid. "I suppose, though, she's not technically dead. She hasn't reached the point in her own timeline where she would be. She's as alive as either one of us -- we just know what's to happen."
