Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Topher Brink and OPEN
What: Doing science! and/or disturbing the neighbors
Where: The hall
When: Late at night, or to be precise, very early morning.

Topher couldn't sleep. He'd been thinking, see, and everyone knew how dangerous that could be. He'd drifted in and out of wakefulness over the last few hours, too tired to sleep properly. He wanted to rest, but resting led to sleeping and sleeping led to dreams, which led to a night of confusion and unfortunate implications. Which left him here, stringing up wiring at two in the morning.

He needed to fix his Chair. If you asked him why, he'd babble something about neurological connections and the recent development of wireless technology, but that really had nothing to do with anything. Truth was, his job defined him, and here in Colligo he didn't even have that. At least this let him pretend he was useful.

Walking down the hallway, he rapped on the walls, pausing every few seconds to inspect the territory. Remote wipes. He was so close, he could taste it. Just a few more tests, a few more equations and he'd be ready. Squatting on the floor, he pulled out his notebook and began to work.

Normally, Lee was one of the go to bed early and wake up at the crack of dawn sort of guys. Or go to bed late and wake up at the crack of dawn. Basically, just waking up as soon as the sun goes up. Probably sooner, since on the Galactica you didn't have the sun to alert you. But it was the first time since he'd been here that he just couldn't fall asleep. Yes, he was exhausted. Yes, he'd been up since about 5:30am. Yes, he'd even worked today when he was supposed to be off. But, still, he was not sleepy. So he'd gone for a run, late at night. Walking back in, more physically exhausted than before but not remotely tired, he found some young guy looking at things, and writing in a notebook on the floor. "You okay there?" Lee asked, quietly. Quietly, since it was so late.

Started, Topher jerked backwards, thumping his head and spilling his work all over the floor. He winced, both in pain and at the noise as papers and parts scattered across the hall. He looked up at the other man, quizzically. Attractive, hero-type, probably would have beaten him up in high school. If he'd gone to high school. "You," he breathed, "are a ninja. A tall, hall stalking ninja - that's a compliment, by the way." He straightened, but didn't bother to stand.

There were a few beats of silences as he shuffled up the things he'd dropped before he realized that he'd been asked a question. "Me? Okay?" he laughed nervously, running long fingers through his already disheveled hair. "What kind of a, I mean, of course I'm okay! Better, in fact, because I'm a genius, and geniuses are always ..." Beat. "Thank you I am fine."

"A ninja," Lee repeated, quietly, watching the man. He reminded Lee of Gaius Baltar, and he wasn't entirely sure if it was in the good way or the bad way. There was something about him, however, that was much more naive than Baltar ever would have been. A bit of innocence that Baltar was perpetually lacking. "You sure about that? Not many people roaming the hallways doing...whatever it is you're doing." Lee stood still for a few moments before asking, "What's a ninja?"

"It's science, new manfriend." Topher responded with a bit of an eyeroll. "Wiring the wireless, which sounds paradoxical, I know, but trust me, it's the way of the future." He gestured while he talked, little emphatic motions that punctuated each word with enthusiasm that only he felt. Vague warning bells went off in his head as he remembered Mag's prediction about his programming bringing about the end of days, but he ignored them. Surely nothing as beautiful as his tech could ever do something as horrible as that, and so he pushed away the bubbles of worry that were beginning to form in the pit of his stomach.

For a seconds he just stood there, consumed by his own thoughts before, "What's a ninja?" Topher's jaw dropped incredulously. "Uh, only the single greatest cultural sensation of all time! Sneaky, big swords, awesome bodysuits ... this isn't ringing any bells, is it?" Bless.

Lee raised an eyebrow. He knew what science was. Lee knew a little too much about science, if you asked him, given what science had done to his culture. "Not one in my culture, I suppose," he replied, after shaking his head a bit. No, there were no ninjas in the twelve colonies.
