Who: Martha Jones and OPEN
Where: On the steps outside the clinic
When: Wednesday, in the early afternoon
Warnings: None.

Martha was bored. That was no surprise, it seemed like she was perpetually bored here in Colligo. It wasn't what she did. In fact, life on this strange city-planet seemed to actually be pretty exciting. The problem lay entirely with her, and she knew it. She'd developed a routine: wake up, go to the clinic, lunch with Christine, bed. Steady job, good friend. A few years ago, that would've been satisfying, exactly what she dreamed of. Nowadays it just made her want to bang her head repeatedly against the wall.

Absently, she rolled the broken pen she was holding between her fingers, ignoring the ink that spilled out onto her hand. This was all the Doctor's fault, she thought with a grin. If he hadn't offered her that one trip, if she hadn't been so stupid as to say yes. She cursed that beautiful, brilliant year in every alien language she knew. Which, admittedly, wasn't many, but it's the thought that counts. Because now that she was settled, with a proper home for the fist time in months, she felt nothing so much as trapped. She itched to go explore, and every nerve in her body shouted at her to run, run, run. But she knew she wouldn't get far. Still, she wasn't sure how much longer she could bear it. She should be getting back inside, she knew, but somehow she wasn't quite ready to abandon her hope that that something, anything would happen.

Brooke's shift finished early Wednesday, and so she decided to wander through the city a little, to get to know the place some more.

Oddly enough, the longer she stayed here the more confused she was getting. But that had very little to do with the city, it had a lot more to do with the amount of time she was spending with Lucas.

She sighed, and then shook herself. No, she wasn't going to mope today, or think about Lucas in that way. She needed a distraction, something to take her mind off it all.

She noticed the woman sitting on the steps and smiled at her. "Hi," she said.

She got mixed responses from saying 'hi' to strangers here - her first week in New York she'd done it automatically but got weird looks in return so she'd stopped. But really, it was second nature to her having grown up in a small town.

"Bloody hell,"she cursed, though she did it with a smile. "You scared the crap out of me. Not used to seeing people around, I guess." She picked up her pen, which she'd dropped. "Anyway, hello!" She waved. "I'm Martha." She gave the other girl a quick once-over. She didn't look to be dying of some horrible disease or bleeding out every orifice, so she supposed it was fine to talk to her as a friend instead of as a patient. Or she so she hoped anyway. Just in case, she crossed her fingers behind her back. Either way, it didn't matter. Anything was better than staring at the wall for a few more brilliantly dull hours.

Brooke smiled as she slowed to a stop. She seemed nice, and she felt a l

"Hey," she said. "I'm Brooke. Sorry I scared you."

"Your accent, you're from England, right?" she guessed. She hadn't run into anyone who didn't seem like an American.

"That obvious?" Martha deadpanned, before succumbing to a smile. "Good ol' London town." She had thought she was starting losing her accent after spending all this time here in town, but now that she thought about it, she suspected it was just as noticeable. "You're an American, right? Sorry, I'm rubbish with accents. You could be from Candiff for all I know."

She glanced up at the other girl, frowning at the flakes of snow that were settling in Brooke's hair. "You're not cold?" she asked, feeling rather rude for not offering to go inside.

Brooke grinned. "Wow, that's cool. I've been to London, but it was a business trip. I was so busy I didn't get to see very much."

"Yeah, from North Carolina," she said.

She looked up at the snow. "It is kinda cold, but I'm all bundled up and just enjoying it. We don't get snow very much where I grew up, " she explained.

Geography, geography, geography. "North Carolina," Martha ventured, "That's in the ... south part, yeah?" She shrugged apologetically. She hadn't spent much time in the US, just a month during the Year that Never Was, though of course, now she couldn't admit to having been there at all. She'd been to North Carolina, once. Just a small town that she'd been passing through. Everyone had died.

She jerked herself away from her memories, smiling perhaps a bit too broadly to cover up her thoughts. "Yeah, the snow is brilliant, actually. I've always loved it, especially as a kid. My mum used to tell me it was powdered sugar. Now that was a disappointment."

"Yup," Brooke said, smiling.

She seemed kind of distracted. Brooke bit her lip, maybe she was missing home or something.

She smiled warmly when Martha talked about snow. "Yeah, the one time we had a really big snowfall, school was cancelled and my friend and I build a snow fort," she said.
