If smiling was going to alarm Ned, then he was going to be alarmed a lot. Death wasn't the type not to smile. She was really very cheerful, for the anthropomorphic personification of death. But what most people forgot was that she was more than that. She was the personification of life and death. You couldn't have one without the other. Birth was as much a part of her as death was. The latter just happened to be her title.
"I've told you, Neddles," she said with a smile, "you can call me Didi." She paused a moment, and took a bite of pie and ice cream, smiling blissfully. "Fantastic" she said. "So, have you considered my offer?"
