"Hey, Topher?" she said immediately, with a teasing smile. "Never start a search engine." It was a little stilted, but better than she had been on Serenity. Over all, she was much better than before. She would never be whole, but all the pieces were taped back together and the cracks were smaller than they had been. It was as close as she would ever get.
"The war was before me," she elaborated, "but Captain and Zoe used to tell us about it. I didn't fight back then." The way she said it, made it clear that she had fought. More than she might have liked. "I'm smarter than you," she said after a moment. It wasn't bragging, or insulting. Just a simple statement of fact. Like saying the sky was blue. "I'm smarter than most people. I can't help it. And it's not all right. I know things that...I shouldn't. And there are things that I should that I can't find. It's like a jigsaw puzzle that got broke apart and they replaced some of the pieces with bits of another puzzle. I think...sometimes...I almost understand it."
"We're not whole," she agreed, reaching over and touching the side of Topher's face, "but we don't need to be. There's no judging. And sometimes we keep each other together when we're breaking." She meant all of them.
