Entry tags:arthur pendragon, guinevere

Who: Arthur and Gwen
What: Slightly off reenactments of moments best left to script writers
When: Early evening
Where: Arthur's room

Arthur stared helplessly at the contents of the refrigerator, stomach gurgling at him as he spotted a variety of foods, hint enough that Merlin was back to his old self. The trouble was, Arthur never quite new how to prepare any of it properly. This was an especially large problem since Guinevere was coming over.

It was only made bigger by the fact that he planned on feeding her. Something.

Glowering, defeated, he tugged out a fresh loaf of brown bread from the breadbox and set it on the counter top, automatically taking the peanut butter off the shelf. This was a bad idea as far as ideas went. And how he'd come up with it wasn't any better. Casting an anxious glance at the clock, Arthur took his sweet time slathering peanut butter on the slices of bread, making sure none oozed over the edges and essentially rearranging the slices until they were perfectly even. This he garnished with freshly cut apples on two plates he was reasonably certain were clean.

All that he had left to do was fidget and wait.

She had been watching the clock the whole time and it felt as if time had slowed down. She wanted to know, needed to know right now. Biting her lip, she drummed her fingers on her knees as she glanced at the time again. Great inventions she had thought at first, something that could tell you the time like that. But when you wanted the time to go by fast it was awful.

The second it hit an hour she was out of her seat and out the door. Just before she made to knock on the door she took a moment to pat down her clothes and hair, taking a few deep breaths. She didn't want it to be obvious that she had been counting down the minutes. Glad that she looked okay, and didn't seem rushed, she knocked on his door.

Which was answered a split-second later by a semi-guilty smile and a quick grab to her wrist. Arthur pulled her through the door without so much as a by-your-leave and stood there, grasping her wrist, for the most awkward second of his life.

"Hello," he blustered admirably, dropping his hand to cup hers. He wondered how anyone ever managed this.

Gwen gasped when he dragged her in, taking a moment to find her footing again. Once she was settled, she smiled a little up at him, taking his hand when he moved it to hers.

"Hi," she said with a little grin.

"You should have come earlier," he chided with excessive condescension. Carefully, he drew her forward and kissed her forehead. Somehow, he would get through the next five minutes without sounding like a clumsy idiot.

"I made dinner for you." He stepped back and gestured behind him at the nicely set table. It didn't look half bad either, he decided, eying the candles he'd found in a drawer that were dripping wax down into their holders. They burned faster than any candle he'd ever seen and doubted their ability to keep until the meal was out.

She rolled her eyes a little when he told her that, letting him pull her closer. It seemed so natural now, the closeness and his lips touching her so gently.

"I wanted to but I was following orders," she teased.

When he said dinner, she instantly worried a little. Nothing looked as if it had been hit by fire. When he pointed at the table, she headed to it slowly, not letting go of his hand. What she saw made her grin so much annd she had to stop herself calling him an adorable little idiot.

"It's perfect," she said with a grin, turning to look at him.

Arthur rubbed the back of his neck and led her to the table only to pull out her chair for her. "It's not much," he hedged. "But it was all I had."

It was only a small lie. One he was bound to be caught at, but she was smiling at him, for him, and Arthur was willing to push that to its fullest extent.

She grinned when he pulled her chair out, thanking him and sitting. So it wasn't exactly the biggest of dinners, but something about it being Arthur who had made it made it even better.

"Really?"

She had a feeling he was lying. After all, she knew Merlin was still checking up on him and if he noticed the lack of food she had no doubt Merlin would sort that as soon as he could.

"Yes, really." Arthur kicked out his own chair and sank into it, eying Guinevere across the table. She appeared to be delighted by this, even if he did feel largely guilty there wasn't more there for them. He supposed, if they got truly hungry, there was more than enough fruit or vegetable lying about for a small feast.

"Then if you do not have anything I will buy some food for you next time I'm out."

She knew if he was lying he wouldn't let her do such a thing. But it didn't matter, because he was still trying. And that meant more to her than if he had presented her with some lavish meal that he had put no thought into.

"It's fine, Arthur. More than fine."

Arthur folded his hands and brought them to his lips as he watched her speak and poke at the food, she wasn't lying, entirely. He would know if she was simply patronizing him, she was, but she was trying to be sincere about it, and her pleasure at this particular sort of surprise was genuine. Sighing, Arthur plucked an apple slice and bit into it with a solid crunch.

"Then eat up."

She watched him as he ate the apple slice, not noticing that she was staring until he told her to eat. Smiling, she picked up one of her own apple slices, taking a bite. She still couldn't get over the fact that he had done something like this, however simple, just for her. It wasn't something she had ever expected from him.

Arthur broke his gaze first, focusing more on what he was eating than the girl across from him. He couldn't help but think she was lying to him. Just a little. This was hardly suitable dinner food. If he were her, he'd eat this now and go and find something better later. Except she was so painfully nice, he doubted she even thought of that.

She couldn't take her eyes from his as she continued to eat. He seemed to have gone to some effort, even for something so simple. And that was all that meant something to her. When she bit into the bread she was instantly hit with a taste she wasn't familiar with. Not a bad taste, but not one she had before.

"What's in this?" she asked with a small smile.

"Peanut butter." Arthur's head snapped up, searching her face for anything odd or out of the ordinary. Yes, Merlin had troubles with it, but he hadn't given thought to whether Guinevere would be allergic as well.

But she was smiling and not swelling, and she certainly didn't appear ready to faint.

"It's nice," she said as a way of explanation. "I've never tried it before."

She saw his reaction to her question and sighed, laughing a little. Reaching out, she placed her hand gently on his arm.

"Stop looking so worried."

Arthur flipped his arm and dragged it backwards until he was cupping her hand.

"Merlin decided to try it once." Arthur squeezed her hand. "And decided to nearly die from it."

Gwen's eyes fell to their hands, before dragging her eyes back to him. Raising her eyebrow, she shook her head a little. It would be Merlin.

"Well I'm not going to die," she said with a grin. "You're stuck with me for a little while longer."

"Is that a complaint? I'll just leave now then, shall I?"

"By all means, please." Arthur gestured in a gallant fashion toward the door with one hand while keeping the other captive.

Gwen raised her eyebrow at his gesture, noting that he had yet to let go of her other hand. Clearly he didn't really mean it. Or at least she hoped he didn't. But she had to play along and with a sigh, she began to stand.

"If you wish."

Arthur swiped his thumb over the back of her hand in one smooth slow stroke and tugged her back into her seat.

"That would be a no then?"

"Thank you for this, Arthur," she said, motioning to the food, or what little was left of it.

"Your welcome." The words were strange on his tongue and even stranger once aired. He busied himself by finished the sandwich, gently untangling their hands as best he could.

She let him let go so he could get back to eating, doing so herself. Brushing back hair from her face she grinned at him.

"It really is nice of you."
