Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Severus and Remus
When: Tonight
Where: Denny's, while not the finest fair around, it's one of the only twenty-four hour restaurants open.
Rating/Warnings: Talking and stuff
Status: In progress, closed.

Severus wanted to know why he was sitting in a booth at a muggle restaurant staring at a can of E-Z Cheez and a plate of Belgian waffles - an astonishingly good combination, but only when he didn't think about the individual components.

Oh, that's right - Severus scrubbed at his scratchy, tired yes - he couldn't sleep, again.

His nightmares were back in full force again, but not that he was going to tell Lily about that - the last time ended with unexpected explosions and his fears being proven well founded, demon or no. And while staying with Merlin was surprisingly none intrusive as Severus normally would have thought, the other man did sleep more than Severus was doing at the moment.

Denny's was the only establishment open this late, and didn't question his food habits. Of course there were bars, but Severus had decided to avoid alcohol, the tequila therapy he had tried before only left him with a pounding headache that only added to the ever present fear.

Though now he had something to hope for, someone - it was hard for his sleep deprived brain to conjure the exact name of the person - but that person had a plan to get rid of this demon, and then maybe Severus could sleep again.

Until then it was processed cheese product and poorly made breakfast item.

Remus was out late. He got restless in the week before the full moon, and this demon wasn't helping. He didn't want to sleep, knowing he would only dream of horrible things. Of losing control and hurting people he cared about. So, he went out. Told Sirius not to worry and went out to wander. Four more days, and already he could feel the pull inside him. His nerves were frayed and his skin felt strange and tight.

He walked into one of those muggle restaurants that stayed open all night and was surprised to see Severus there. He walked over and sat down across from the younger man with a tired sigh. He gestured to the waitress and ordered a coffee, the rested his elbows on the table and his head in his hands.

Severus was taken aback at Remus Lupin taking the chair across from him. His first instinct was to look around for Black, where ever Lupin was Black was close behind. Adrenaline fueled his quick survey of the restaurant, the rushing in his ears more than sleep deprivation induced, but he could see no lurking shadows... So then why was Lupin here.

"What? Why?" until his heart returned to normal Severus was limited to short phrases.

He paused a moment to let the urge to rashly withdraw his wand pass before continuing - but he did keep his hands under the table, he never knew when a 'calm' talk would turn into an ambush.

"If this is about Wolfsbane... I've been busy," which was true, his lack of sleep left him barely able to complete basic functions much less devote attention to extraneous projects.

Severus scanned the restaurant again, sure if Black was going to hex him it would be for not focusing all his attention on his bestest-good friend and his friend's needs.

Remus sighed, then thanked the waitress as she brought him coffee. "I can't sleep," he muttered, taking a sip. He usually hated the stuff. "I didn't want to keep Sirius up." He barely noticed the tension in Severus.

"I came in for coffee and saw you," he said with a shrug. "And I didn't want to sit alone. I left my wand back at the flat. Any other questions?" Why yes, he was gruffer than usual. But the lack of sleep and the nearing full moon more than accounted for that.

Great, the other man didn't want to be Black's problem so he decided to come torture Severus. Severus couldn't help but feel a bit resentful towards to Universe and all that, he had been keeping his head down, not seeking out that fame and glory and power his younger self had thought important - and yet it seemed the Universe still felt he needed to be smacked down. What was sleepless night number four without adding a talk with an arch nemesis?

"Again, I ask why? We aren't exactly on speaking terms," Severus was a tad exasperated - okay, more than a little exasperated, the last thing he needed was to be the butt of some elaborate joke.

"And yet you seem to be having no trouble speaking," Remus said tersely. He drank more of his coffee and closed his eyes as if it would block out the taste...and Severus's attitude. "But if it's such a problem, and civil conversation escapes you so, you could always try not speaking. And we can sit in silence and then leave. I'm sure you'll find yourself capable of it if you try hard enough." He clenched his hand were it rested on the table, keeping his composure. He felt stretched thin and it showed. Between the lack of sleep and the nightmares he did, all tied together with the coming moon, he felt like he was breaking apart.

He continued drinking his coffee, not caring for food at the moment and only drinking it to keep awake. It was funny to miss his own version of Severus. But at least the man was capable of carrying on a conversation that wasn't filled to the brim with spite...provided nobody else was around.

"Oh, I'm sorry, did I invite you here, to sit and have a civil conversation, and now am failing to fulfill my hosting duties?" Severus was not pleased to be snarked at, he had simply been minding his own business, dealing with this hellish demon on his own (because, clearly, no one else could help him with it). Hell he had even made a concerted effort to not talk to Black or Potter (Harry) so as not to draw Lupin's holier-than-thou gaze in his direction. Severus had not hinted that he and Lupin even had a business relationship, asking why the man chose to sit across from him was a perfectly acceptable question, considering the circumstances.

Severus's frayed nerves had about enough. He had the constant worry he was going to hurt Lily - in fact, in their last meeting, she had physically been hurt, something he blamed himself for despite knowing he had no way of knowing that abandoned car would explode - those nightmares he had prevented sleep so, lucky him, it was sleepless night number four. He did not have the patience to deal with Lupin trying to push him around.

"You want silence?" Severus stood up, pulled his wallet out and dropped the appropriate bill on the table, and then turned to leave.
