WHO: Wesley Wyndam-Pryce and Winifred Burkle.
WHAT: Wes has been kind of a jerk.
WHEN: Evening.
WHERE: Their flat.
RATING: TBD.
STATUS: In progress.

Wes had been avoiding Fred for days. Keeping to himself, or spending his time in a bar, and distant when he was around her. It was like it had been after Connor or after Fred had died so that Illyria could exist. His fears were simple, and though he knew they weren't real...just an illusion, he couldn't stand to look at her when all he saw was blue hair and a hardened shell. Not the woman he loved. But that was the problem. He knew it was fake. Watchers could tell. And he hated the weakness that allowed this demon to manipulate him. Perhaps this was the real fear. Succumbing to simple, human weakness.

Finally though, it faded away. Maybe he hadn't been entertaining enough for the demon. Maybe it had moved on to someone more exciting. Wesley didn't particularly care. He just wanted to go home. He wanted to see Fred again and really see her. He walked into the flat and saw Fred, giving her a small, sheepish smile. "I've been something of a prat lately," he said, by way of greeting.

There was a book open in Fred's lap but it was the last thing on her mind. She chewed on a fingernail, staring absently across the room as her mind battled with heavier thoughts. It had been a rough week of no sleep and absence. Whatever was affecting her seemed to be affecting Wesley as well. At least that was what she hoped it was.

Pulling her mind back to the book took some work. Just as she managed, she heard the door open and her head shot up, feeling a sense of relief when she saw it was Wesley. She didn't stand up at first to greet him, unsure.

But when she saw that smile, the book dropped to the floor and she crossed to him in long strides, throwing her arms around his neck and hugged him tightly. "It's all right," she murmured.

Wesley hugged Fred tightly, glad that he was seeing her after so long seeing only Illyria. He just held her for a long moment, breathing in the sent of her hair and letting it calm him down. He had missed her so much. Even though she'd been right there, it had felt like she was gone...and it had hurt more than he could ever say.

"I couldn't look at you," he said softly, "without seeing her. I knew it wasn't real...that it was all in my head...but it didn't change what I saw. It felt like losing you again. I'm sorry, Fred. I'm so sorry."

She gripped his shirt, inhaling deeply and closing her eyes. The space between them had been miserable and she'd had her suspicions what was causing it. But her own fear had kept her from doing what she usually would have done and ask. Drawing back, she took his face in her hands and looked up at him, heart breaking.

"No," she said quietly, shaking her head. "Wesley, I can't imagine what you went through with..." Fred trailed off, unable to complete the thought out loud. "To have this demon make you relive it...it's all right. I'm here and I'm not going anywhere." She drew in a deep breath.

"Illyria will never find us here." The words were spoken for her reassurance as much as his, trying to put her own fears to rest. "Never."

"I hated it," he admitted. "Every day felt like dragging myself over broken glass just to keep going. And she was...always there...but I couldn't ask her to go, because it was all I had left of you, even though it killed me to look at her...it was you, but not enough to fool myself. And she offered...to look like you, but it felt wrong to give in to that lie, even if all I wanted was to see your face."

He sighed heavily. "But you're here now," he said softly, voice full of awe as he looked at her, "and I won't lose you like that again. Even reliving it...knowing it was really you and not her kept me from breaking. And now that's over. And we've made it through. And Illyria will never be here...you'll never become here. Not if I can help it."

He leaned down and kissed her, feeling peace for the first time in days. "I want you with me forever," he said softly.

God, she wanted to hate this place. For bringing that demon here to make them experence and relive their greatest fears, for making him hurt. But she couldn't. It was because of Colligo that they had a second chance at their relationship, together and whole. It didn't stop her from being angry on his behalf.

She rose up on her toes to kiss his forehead, a reassuring gesture to add to the words. "Between the two of us, we won't let it happen," she said softly, resolute, chin held high. Fred tilted her head up to meet him as he came in closer, closing her eyes as their lips met, one hand resting against the back of his neck.

"I want to be with you forever. I spent too long deciding what I wanted. Now that I have you, I don't want to let you go."

Wesley couldn't hate this place, even with the pain of the past days, because Fred was here. She was alive and whole and in love with him and that meant everything to him. He would rather be here with her, with all the hardships, than back home without her.

"We won't," he agreed, tracing his fingers along her cheek and down her jaw, as if memorising her features. He loved her, more than he knew how to say, and kissing her was like coming home. He sighed, just resting his forehead against hers and savouring the moment. This was real. This was everything.

"Then don't," he said softly, taking her hand in his, "don't let me go. Stay with me...be with me...for as long as we have." He took a step back and looked at her, words coming without thought or planning. "Marry me, Fred."

Her breath hitched in her throat, eyes going wide. Had he just said what she thought he had? There was no mistaking those three words for others, was there? The one word answer was stuck on the tip of her tongue as she tried to reply to him. Finally a smile broke, a wide, happy smile.

"Yes. Yes!" she shouted and dropped his hand to throw her arms around his neck again, this time in joy instead of sympathy. Since the time of their arrival, through what ordeals Wesley had gone through and knowing the future she had narrowly avoided, the spontaneous decision was an absolute.

The fear demon could just wander off and haunt someone else now. She was too happy to give him the time of day.
