WHO: Dean & Jo.
WHAT: She's checking up on him.
WHEN: Shortly after this.
WHERE: His motel room.
RATING: TBD.
STATUS: Incomplete.

After Dean had turned her away, Jo really thought she was done. She planned on just going off and dealing with her own visions, letting Dean deal with his on his own without any interference from her. That lasted only a few days, and before she knew it, she was back on the network, contacting him again and trying to once again get him to open up to her. No, she didn't want to sit around a campfire holding hands and discussing warm and fuzzy feelings, but she just couldn't let him be by himself to deal with all of this. Try as she might not to, she cared about him, and no matter how frustrating or stubborn he was, that didn't seem like it was going to change anytime soon.

Thankful to finally get an address out of him, some kind of permission, Jo immediately headed out the door, ignoring the visions of Ellen that stilled seemed to follow her everywhere now. She made a quick stop at a diner and picked up a couple bacon cheeseburgers to take along with her, and then headed straight to the motel, or more specifically to his room, where she knocked a few times and waited for an answer.

Dean hadn't really planned on giving her the address of where he was staying but he'd had more than a little to drink when they had talked and somehow the conversation spiraled into her being on her way. Which was fantastic. Really. Because he really wanted Jo to see him this way. He was utterly fucked up at the moment and he had fully intended on hiding out in this crappy motel until whatever it was passed, but unfortunately that didn't seem like it was going to happen.

His eyes snapped away from the horror around him to the door at the sound of knock. He supposed he could just sit there and see how long it took her to leave but somehow Jo struck him as the kind to possibly try breaking down the door. And he definitely didn't have the cash to pay for that when he did finally leave. Dean took another long drink from the bottle before he set it on the table and moved to the door.

"You shouldn't have come," he said but stepped aside to let her in anyways.

"I shouldn't do a lot of things, Dean," she informed him as she entered the room. She took one glance around, didn't see anything like he was seeing of course, and then set the bag of burgers on a nearby table. "I didn't know if you had much of anything to eat, so I brought that."

Turning to look back into his face, she frowned. He was obviously drunk, but even more than that, he was obviously having a lot of trouble with this fear demon, and anyone could have seen that written all over his face. "I'm not even gonna ask how you're doing," she replied with a small shake of her head. "I wish you would've let me come here sooner."

He eyed the burgers for a moment, the combination of the alcohol running through his system and his waking nightmare making his reactions run a little behind where they should. "Thanks," he said and turned back to look at her.

The entire world seemed a little unhinged to him at the moment, things that shouldn't be there, things he had hoped to never seen again. He reached a hand slowly across the space between them and touched the side of her face gently, as though assuring himself that she was actually there. Everything around him was blood and gore and the worst of what he had seen during his time in hell, she seemed so out of place there, too clean, too good.

"Jo..." he started but lost the thought as Alastair grinning at him from the other side of the room caught his eye, the glint of light as he turned his blade in his hand. Dean dropped his hand from Jo's face and moved to sit at the table, pulling one of the burgers out.

Jo blinked back the surprise she felt when Dean placed his hand against the side of her face, though it shouldn't have been so much of a shock. She had no idea what it was he was seeing, but she knew whenever her mother would appear somewhere, the one thing that seemed to help no matter what was being around someone, anyone, who couldn't see what she was seeing. It reminded her that it was all in her head, it wasn't real, and even now when the visions seemed to be at their worst, it helped.

She could see his gaze flicking away, off to a point behind her somewhere, and she let go of a breath she didn't even know she'd been holding for his sake. She remained where she stood for just a few moments, then followed him to the table. She pulled another chair over next to his own, sitting beside him rather than just across from him or somewhere nearby. She was probably even a little too close, considering he needed a little elbow room to eat, but she wasn't taking any chances.

"They're probably greasier than any human being should eat," she stated with a wan, lopsided smile, trying desperately to keep his focus off of whatever he was seeing. "But I figured you liked them that way."

He smiled a little despite himself when she placed herself right beside him. It was kind of nice, even if he wasn't entirely convinced she was really there half the time. The whole situation was far too surreal for him, some weird waking dream.

He handed her a burger and shrugged at her remark. "Well it's not like either of us will probably live long enough to die of a heart attack," he muttered as he unwrapped the burger. Maybe it was a pretty pessimistic statement but it was the truth. The lives they all lead didn't much lend itself towards an extended lifespan.

Jo would have said something in response to that statement, something to put down his pessimism without sounding corny at the same time, but she couldn't find the words right away. After all, she was honestly surprised he'd included her in what he'd said, because in her opinion, it meant her hunting was something he'd accepted. She was so used to people trying to dissuade her from the lifestyle, Dean being near the top of the list, that it was a bit of a shock. She didn't say anything about it though. It wasn't the time or the place.

"Then eat up," she said, unwrapping her own burger. "Screw Jenny Craig, right?"

Glancing over at Dean, she frowned a little. "Look, Dean... This isn't real. Whatever you're seeing, it isn't real. It's the same thing as...when I see my mom. Just a fucked up side effect from a fucked up demon."

He took a fairly decent sized bite of the burger and chewed slowly, thinking her words over. Dean knew that, logically, that the poor bastards getting carved up mere feet in front of him really didn't exist. That Alastair wasn't really staring him down. He knew that. But he also knew it would be real again one day. Try as he might he couldn't hold any sense of hope that he would never not go back. Things just didn't work that way.

He would die and he would go back. That's how it worked.

"Goddamn demons," he muttered and offered her a weak smile.

Jo returned his weak smile with a small one of her own. She wished she could have done more for him, but offering her company to get his mind off of it was really all she could do. That didn't even solve the problem though, and she knew it.

"Well, at least we got to play naked Battleship because of it." And then some, but that didn't really need to be said out loud. "That's one good thing, right?"

He gave her the first genuine smile he'd had in days at that one. "Yeah we did," he said almost cheekily and grinned again. "I'll never look at Battleship the same again."

He idly wondered if they should possibly talk about what had happened, because it wasn't like Jo was someone he could just walk away from and never have to deal with again. But somehow the idea of talking about it seemed even more daunting than the visions that surrounded him.

There was the smile she'd been waiting for. It was impossible not to return it wholeheartedly, and even though she knew it would probably be short-lived, it was still something that seemed to be working to distract him from whatever he was seeing around him. Of course it would work, this was Dean Winchester.

"I don't think any board games will ever be the same again. When you think about it, you could make an adult version out of anything. Candyland, Yahtzee, Chutes and Ladders... We should make it our goal to ruin every childhood game there is." She grinned a little wider, not really concerned about the fact that she was suggesting they do it all over again.
