Dear Editor,
In response to the letter dated 20 October 1980 from a Mr Horton Whoseberry accusing the Prophet of neglecting to mention the fact that those recently abducted happen to be Muggleborns, there are several points I would like to raise, lest the readers of the Prophet find themselves falling prey to Mr Whoseberry's attempts to undermine this good publication with his false notions of insight and wit.
It is true that those who have been abducted are Muggleborns. And regardless of what the Prophet has included or omitted in their accounts of recent events, this is a fact that the esteemed Aurors of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement are well aware of and investigating with all due diligence. If, as the so-called Death Eaters have claimed, those they have abducted are a part of a conspiracy to destroy our great society, the possibility of a much larger effort on the part of Muggleborns to undermine the Ministry is certainly one that must be considered.
But I must question just what Mr Whoseberry is attempting to accomplish with his letter. One of the reasons the Ministry has not publicized this fact itself is out of a desire to avoid generating mass hysteria against Muggleborns. Even if there is some concerted Muggleborn effort to harm our society, there is not one among us who wishes to see a blood-based witch hunt due to the actions of a few rogue witches and wizards. But perhaps that is precisely Mr Whoseberry's goal.
Of course I would offer caution to anyone who thinks to take terrorists at their word. It is still a matter under investigation. Which is yet another reason that I find Mr Whoseberry's letter to be at best ill-advised and at worst, outright dangerous. Revealing privileged information in an ongoing investigation does nothing but harm the efforts of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement.
Of course if these Death Eaters are simply attempting to generate mass hysteria with their efforts, the blood status of those kidnapped may be nothing more than a coincidence. Or more likely, they have chosen to target the most vulnerable among us as their victims.
The important thing is that the Ministry is making every effort to both find those responsible and protect all people of wizarding Britain. Which is why the Wizengamot has enacted the Domestic Precautionary Act to assist those who may not be equipped to protect themselves and I would certainly encourage all Muggleborn witches and wizards to take advantage of this valuable Ministry service.
Sincerely,
Atticus Avery
Adviser to the Minister for Magic
