Another Slap
Her foot falls made soft echoes as the short heels of her shoes made contact to the high gloss light colored floor of the hall way. The research center was relatively quiet at this time of day during the lunch hour. Kathleen had a light lunch in her office while she caught up on some reading of an online medical journal, when she received a call from the receptionist that she had a visitor. She had no appointments and did not expect any visitors today, especially someone from the Cook County Sheriff's office.
The heavy glass sliding double doors automatically opened as she triggered the senor upon her approach. She had already spotted the man in the Deputy Sheriff's uniform sitting in one of the chairs of the reception room. The doctor in her long white coat with maroon blouse and light gray skirt passed through security doors. She nodded and smile at the receptionist who was on the phone as she came to the counter and then walked directly to the Deputy.
The law enforcement officer came up on his feet holding a clip board and a large vanilla envelop. "Doctor Kathleen J. Forbes?" He asked with a serious tone and straight face looking down from his 6 foot 3 inch frame.
"How can I help you, Deputy?" she asked.
"I'm here to serve you papers from the Cook County Court," he said while he handed her the vanilla envelop.
"Huh?" She stood confused as she held the envelop, wondering what she had done.
"Doctor Forbes, I need your signature showing you received the court documents." He presented the clip board with a form for her signature and a pen. The Deputy had done this many times and had his routine down. Those he served papers to before had pretty much the same expression that the doctor had on her face now. The faster he could get this done, the quicker he could move on to the next person.
She signed. The Deputy quickly noted the time and date, and then thanked her and wished her a good day. Was he joking? She thought as he turned to walk away toward the elevators.
Kathleen unclasped the envelop where she stood, and then pulled out the thin stack of legal papers from the court. She read her name and then that of the persons suing her. They were the parents of Nina Taylor and they were suing her and St. Joseph Hospital for medical malpractice. The doctor shook her head in disbelief. She had done everything she could to revive Nina, but the poor girl had lost too much blood from the punctured wounds on her neck. A vampire had been the cause of her death, not her. Just the same, Kathleen felt like she had been slapped again by the mother when she informed the parents of Nina's passing that early morning.
Someone or some law firm convinced the Taylor's they had a case.
