Talkative Soul
George was nervous, more than nervous, he was scared. Kris was looking for him, apparently somebody had sold him out and given her his name.
Now she wanted to talk, about everything.
He found his way back to that bar he'd spoken to the brunette in, hopefully she was there and he could talk to her. Maybe she knew something or could do something. All he knew was he didn't want to die at the hands of some crazed Slayer.
"Hey," George said once he got close to the bar. "You know that lady I spoke to before? You seen her around?"
"Here, there... A little bit of everywhere."
Interrupting the bartender before they could speak, Katherine lumbered forth to give the man a good-natured slap on the shoulder. She was in a good mood and more proactive, physically, than before. Their last meeting had involved the social disempowerment of a Slayer she knew to be trouble. Had Kris been successful in her operation, it could have been a frustratingly large obstacle to overcome. Performing a virtual late-term abortion on the crisis, had let her indirectly head it off at the pass.
And now that she had verified it was one and the same Kris, as the one from Las Vegas, the thought of being responsible for that, was something for the undead brunette to be proud of.
Maybe there was something to be said for a little social interaction, after all?
"How ya' doin'? Improving since our last convo, one hopes."
George turned his head. "If by that you mean the complete and utter destruction of one Kris Michaels reputation then yeah I'm doing much better."
He fidgeted, visibly nervous. "But she's coming for me, somebody let slip that it was me who said all those things and now she wants to meet me, straighten everything out."
"Who knows what she'll do to me if she gets her hands on me, she sounded pretty mad on the phone, like she wanted to tear me limb from limb." A slight pause. "Can she do that?"
"What do you think?"
Katherine enjoyed this part; the manipulative corrupting of shoe-horning someone into an arrangement, only to twist the proverbial knife and get them to realise just how far up Shit Creek they had drifted without a paddle in sight. Sure, she could have tried dealing with the Slayer, herself, by now, but the vampiress had plenty of other things to keep her occupied and, for once, wanted to see how much of a living hell she could dump the girl into, before doing away with her, once and for all. It was rare for her not to just force a confrontation, right from the start, but she had time.
Kris Michaels would not.
"Well, sounds like you confirmed those rumours about her, huh? Wanna' drink or is this pow-wow arranged for tonight?"
He swallowed hard, imagination running wild with vivid imagery of what could happen to him at this meeting with Kris. "Drink, I could do with a drink. Definitely."
George slumped onto a stool and nodded his head. "Yeah, I did. Everybody was glad to hear them, didn't want somebody like that around their kids. Ripped her business apart." He tapped his fingers restlessly on the bar top. "I gotta meet her in a couple hours, talk about what I've been saying." He wound up with his forehead planted against the bar.
"I'm dead, aren't I? Crazy bitch is gonna kill me."
"Probably," came her drawl of a reply. One finger held up to attract the attention of who would pour the man a drink, letting them know she would pay for it. "Pissing off a lady's like unprotected sex, buddy... Always think of the consequences."
In all of Katherine's long years of experience, she might prefer operating alone, but knew the adage about 'a woman scorned' could be absolutely correct. Guys were fairly straight forward, mentally-speaking. Or at least, the majority of them were. Even when it came down to revenge, they would tend to go for the most direct route possible. Women, on the other hand... It did not take vampirism for them to demonstrate cruelty. If a guy punched you in the face for trying to sleep with his wife, then a woman, in the same circumstances, could do an awful lot worse.
Add super-powers to the mix and it was a recipe for disaster.
"Tell you what," she volunteered, tapping fingernails on the counter, "I could come with, if y'want. It's the least I could do for you helping to take a menace off our streets, right?"
That caused George to lift his head and regard Katherine with a naive glint of hope in his eyes. "You'd do that?" His posture even straightened up a bit. "That would be great. Can't do anything to me with another person around."
Little did he know who he happened to be speaking to or the fate that might await him as soon as he stopped being useful.
"I'm supposed to meet her at the basketball courts near her place of work, said something about neutral ground or some crap like that."
Hearing her talkative companion order his favoured beverage, Katherine nodded with a casual smile at the designation of meeting place. A time and location where the Slayer would emerge, unprepared and face her for the first time since leaving Nevada. Had Katherine not presumed the girl dead and possessed a good idea of where to find her, before, then this moment would have come an awful lot sooner.
"Maybe we can put it on film. Make a show of it. Maybe even get some kinda of confession and put her out of action, for good," she suggested, turning head to take the readied glass from bartender and slide it George's way. Something dropping, unseen from her palm and fizzing in the brew. "Bottom's up."
Poison was a tremendously useful product for a professional killer. It could be used to paralyse, change mental perception or, for the most part, just make someone die.
"Take it easy," Katherine murmured with an upwards nod at George's first - and last - sip of chemically-laced alcohol. "Too much of that stuff'll kill ya'..."
George nodded his head enthusiastically. "Yeah, that would be great. Get her done for good, that sort of thing. Can't wait to see the look on her face when she realises, it'll be priceless."
He picked up his drink and didn't so much as bat an eyelash before he took a healthy sip, even managing to miss the bitter aftertaste once he was finished. "It'll be great," he confirmed with another nod of his head. "Teach that bitch a lesson."
It started slow.
His vision blurred and then his throat became to close up, making it very hard to breathe. A frantic clawing at the bar was ignored, people passing it off as a man unable to hold his alcohol. George's eyes slid to Katherine and words were mouthed but not heard as the poison worked its way through his veins, stripping cells of the oxygen they so desperately needed, making it exceedingly difficult to continue breathing.
It ended with George on the bar, foam on the corner of his mouth and eyes wide open.
"Wanna' sleep it off?" Katherine mused, angling her victim's face down. Better for all concerned, that his state was not guessed, for now. "Can't say as I blame ya'..."
George had been a tool, in all senses of the word; so wrapped up in his own hatred and paranoia, that he had required just the slightest nudge to jump off the moral deep end. And it was so stupid, the vampiress would think, as she left to head on out of the door and down the street. Didn't he knew she would have protected him? At least, until his purpose was served and time was up. But, oh... Look at that. It was.
Time to play some basketball. Preferably with a Slayer's head.
