Glimpse of a nightmare's companion
Grabbing her towel as she slowed the treadmill to a walk Juliet wiped her forehead, face, and neck before picking up the water bottle snugged in its holder on the panel of the machine. The heart rate monitor showed her pulse dropping down steadily as she walked out the lactic acid that would still be built up in her muscles.
On the screen in front of her on the wall, there was a frozen frame of a small video clip she'd watched during one part of her run. It depicted a shadowy figure that had lurched out of frame just as the camera had finally focused on the spot it had been in. The very amateur footage was enough to make the viewer seasick with the weaving and jiggling, most of it completely useless, just this shadowy glimpse at the end making it even worth the screen time.
That shadowy figure was enough to grab Juliet's attention though. It was almost identical to one she had become familiar with, more nights than she was willing to admit, in her dreams. It wasn't the only one, but it was a recurring one and she stared up at the pixilated representation as she gulped down some more water and electrolyte replacement. It was the first time she'd seen anything that came close to what she knew, and she was already working to find out who the owner of the video was.
