I was broke and living on the streets in New York, german town. I learned to juggle and hustle, con the marks, that shit. Cops would break it up faster if you looked shady so I kept at it until I could get five balls in the air. Still got fucked in the end. Decided I wasn't pretty enough to sell my ass so I joined a traveling show. It's evolved since then.
What's good about the circus lifestyle?
It's always moving and changing. Like my show. I juggled, then I brought in fire, learned some shit here and there and became a geek. I didn't wake up one fucking morning planning it, it just is. And it's a place for freaks, for outcasts and people without shit else to do with themselves but make a fucking scene. Worst I get here is a 'fuck you Roddy'. On the street, people really try and fuck you up. Fuzz mostly. Fuck them.
What are some of the drawbacks?
Tourists. I hate fucking marks, always some asshole kid or college frat boy trying to heckle me and piss me off. Then you got the people who join to flash their tits or 'live on the edge'. The edge is eating out of garbage cans and sleeping in a fucking gutter with crackheads not knowing if you rolled over on a fucking dirty needle, not traveling with the circus.
Do you think the general population looks at you differently because of your profession?
Fuck. You think they looked at me any different before I was a geek?
Are there ever physical altercations? Is 'carnie justice' real?
Ask Ophelia. I hear someone got real fucking put out with her and crammed carrion in her trailer. You don't fuck with other performers, especially the freaks. We've got the least to lose and we're rabid.
What are your ambitions outside of the circus?
Drink, fuck, shrivel up in an alley and OD on dope. Hand to mouth, one day at a fucking time. I wouldn't be shit outside this.
Was there anything that was shocking or hard to get used to when you started?
Sure. Schedule mostly. Didn't have a 9 to 5 job before. Then I had to get used to the divas and the drama queens and tough guys, but you do.
What has been most difficult for you?
Coming up with my own shit. Shock's old. People do this shit on video now and worse, you got the net, got those sick movies. People are harder to shake. I eat a lightbulb and someone says it's fake, I do a razor and they've seen a fucking magic kit for it. For the record, I don't fucking shill and I don't fucking do magic tricks. When I take a bite out of something, it's sharp.
You live in close quarters with many different people. What are the inherent conflicts most often about?
Who's fucking who and who they were fucking before and how they're still butt-fucking-hurt about it. The relationships are a fucking joke, and cause of how it is, you say one thing and it's everywhere in an hour, even if it isn't what you originally said. You never know who you can trust to run their mouth.
What about relationships - What's your approach to romance on the road?
I don't do them. One night stands or I fuck in the carnival. I've been around, people know I don't give a sshit. It's sex. It's one person giving another a hand, or two or three giving each other a hand, but whatever it is, I don't let it get personal. Last thing you want, that shit starts fucking wars.
