She let his hand slide through her fingers, brows creasing as he stepped suddenly back. Breathing heavily, she remained where she was, watching him warily, her hands pressed flush against her body where moments ago his palms had drawn from her. The wind around them slowed to a keening wail and then, with a final, gusting sigh, extinguished around their ankles.
His apology caused her to still, and when he lifted his gaze back to her she was filled with a wave of relief to find them devoid of the blazing cruelty they had hosted just moments before. She had thought, not for the first time, that perhaps he was right, and that the Djinn she had known so many years ago really was no more. It would have been so easy for him to have followed through with her offer if that were true.
She was overcome by the solace that came with knowing, with finality, that this was not the case.
Pushing away from the trailer, she took a step toward him, slipping into his space with the tense uncertainty of a wild doe. She glanced between his eyes, wordlessly scrutinizing him, then moved to close the distance between them, pressing her forehead against his chest with a deflating sigh. "Careless Djinn."
