Rose did not like people at her back, especially if they were strangers and even more so if they were strangers with reputations for cruelty. She wasn't fast enough to avoid Byron when he moved, and she stiffened at the feel of him behind her for an instant before shifting into her bird form. The three of them were standing so close together that she didn't try to fly away - all that would do is foul her wings. But she let herself drop in the space created by her new, smaller body, hopping a bit to get herself clear, and then spreading her wings to flutter a few feet away.
Once clear, she resumed human form, cold and polite on the surface to hide the way her heart was beating frantically from the surprise. "I am out," she said, brushing at imaginary wrinkles in her sweater, "to provide Cirque employees with any necessary medical attention, as always. I'll thank you to keep your distance," she added. "I'm not here to play games with you. I think we're done here."
