Looking at Maddy - bright, beautiful, irrepressible - Mona was just so happy to be there. Seven years older than Mona, Maddy had always been so cool in her eyes, so grown up, so much the idea of what Mona wanted to be like. But, of course, only Maddy could be Maddy. There was no one in the world like her.
It surprised her to hear that there were other humans - what would they be like? How on earth had they ended up here? Were they like her, born into a family of special people but tremendously unspecial themselves?
"I can talk to him" Mona said with a nod. "I've done enough job interviews that I'll be okay. Even if this is a very different sort of job," she added, considering that. This was not the sort of job interview she had ever prepared for.
