The Circus had seemed like a good idea when Marco had picked up the scent of festival foods and the hint of laughter and cheering in the distance. The siblings had made good on their word, they had a month to get out of their childhood home town (state was preferable) and were on the hunt for a new place. Things were tense with the Pack and the family in general – the sooner the siblings were gone the better, but it was taking a toll on their emotional state even though they were trying to ignore it. Marco was sure Aletha had to be wondering if the sacrifices were going to be worth whatever she found in him. Maybe she wasn’t, but Marco wanted to make her world bigger and brighter than it had ever been or would have been if they’d stuck with the Pack anyway. Her happiness meant more to him than he probably even knew. So instead of the next place they came to a rolling stop across the street from the circus and with a devious smirk Marco pulled into the parking area before bounding around the truck to help Aletha free of the cab with promises of a good time and full bellies of sickeningly bad food for them. It seemed like a good idea even with the sense of something like fluid electricity gliding over his skin and the hair-ruffling scent of other shifters being much closer as they made their way closer to the ticket booth. It both looked like any circus he could remember going to, but also seemed totally different. Passing through the arch of lights and entering the world separate from the outside was a type of magic all on its own – he felt light, hopeful, and ready to have simple fun for the first time in a long while. There were attractions, games, and of course food – what more could he ask for? The fact that he got to be there openly with the woman he’d had to pretend to not adore for so many years made his heart swell and push away any worries he may have had. With her hand in his; the duo went about partaking in the activities they found most interesting - for a little over an hour they were just a normal couple on a date night. That small amount of time felt like forever for Marco, but he wasn’t happy when it came to a grinding halt with the sudden appearance of someone that wanted them to follow. Management wanted them? Marco knew they hadn’t done anything wrong while they’d been on the grounds and no one knew them (that they’d seen) to have cared about their PDA. Funnier still? Marco sort of wanted to meet with the Management once they were brought up – had never in his life had a single bit of interest in the people who may run places like this, but it also felt like he was supposed to meet them. He looked to Aletha to gauge her reaction to everything, offered her his hand with a silent promise that he’d protect her (because he always would) and only when she accepted would he be willing to move forward. |
