"This is home now," Maddy replied. "It takes in people like us, who are running from something, or the odd one out, or who just don't fit in anywhere else. It's not purely altruistic, but still...I can't find it in myself to mind too much."
She reached over and poked him in the shoulder. "Right, then. I'll leave most of that to Catherine, but if I don't hear from you for a while, I may come and hunt you down."
"I can a bit, yeah," she replied. "So if you ever did, I'd give it a go. And if those pictures exist here, I really want to see them."
She shrugged. "I probably would have ended up convincing someone to give me a job." She tapped her temple. "I didn't when I left high school, because I wanted it on my merits. But you're only young and pretty for so long, you know?"
She laughed again and patted his shoulder. "I tease because I care."
