It gets better could have been trite, but hearing that from another normal human who had been here so long did make Mona feel a little better. It didn't feel like empty sentiment. It felt like real compassion and common ground and understanding, and Mona so badly wanted all those things. So the smile she gave to Nadine then was grateful and genuine, even if it was still wavering.
"That sounds like a really good idea," Mona agreed with a big nod, climbing into the back of the taxi. She wanted to ask Nadine more questions right away, but she was very aware of the taxi driver who would hear them. She couldn't ask anything weird in front of some poor taxi driver just trying to get through his shift.
So she sat, hands pressed together between her knees as she tried not to fidget with them nervously. She didn't know where they were going, but she was willing to follow Nadine. She was ready to follow Nadine anywhere at this point, pancakes or other.
