"Oh no," Laurel said, realizing she'd been misunderstood. "I meant that I'm not a fan of lawyer jokes. But being one means hearing them," she said with a shrug that she was pretty sure he couldn't see. "And trust me, I've probably heard the DA jokes," she said with a laugh.
"Though I have to say that the job stays interesting even without the jokes. What sort of law do you practice?"
She bit her lip to keep from asking if he could see the view. She'd guessed that he was blind, but maybe the sunglasses and cane were for a different reason.
"I miss it too," she confided. There was a note of wistfulness in her tone. She missed a lot of things about back home. And she was also trying not to think about how her dad was doing with her missing. The team would likely get along okay without her, but her dad had already lost Sara too many times and she worried that losing another daughter might be hard for him.
