A curious name, Me. Perhaps she was just being a somewhat impertinent youth- although he did not sense this was the case. Due to linguistic complexities, perhaps it was merely a name that sounded similar to a personal identifier? He suddenly wondered how it was that he could even understand all these people, and why they could understand him- a very odd circumstance, which would almost suggest a hallucinatory nature to the experience. But, the very real nature of experiences like hunger, thirst, and weariness, and the distinct effects of alcohol or Spice (which, to his relief, he kept finding a refilled container of in his room each morning, by some fortunate property of the train) did make it clear that this all was no hallucination.
"Me, hrm? A brief, but at least accurate name for any person, eh? " Another slight smile, still polite, but also somewhat entertained, as she simply helped himself to his bottle of brandy without asking. He would have offered anyway, and, it showed a self-assured confidence, a trait he approved of. "It is quite good brandy," he told her. "I am the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. Ruler of Giedi Prime and Governor of Arrakis. I expect you've never heard of either one. Time and space are vast."
He let out a snort of laughter at her question- although every Imperial was thoroughly schooled, and this included schooling in philosophy, he was certainly no devoted adherent to the dominant religious teaching of his time. Occasionally there were notions worth contemplating, and it had its uses, but lately he'd mainly found religion troublesome. It produced messiahs, and one of these had been causing him a great deal of trouble.
"Ahh, no- I prefer practicality. This is a book from my home. The only one on that shelf I was familiar with. For the most part, it is a tedious piece of work. Meant to keep people in line, and remind them of the Imperial strictures. 'Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a man's mind.' and other such commands. Of course, that one's enforced by death, where most of them are just strongly advised." He smirked, and took another drink of his brandy. "I expect you have such systems where you from as well. Useful, insofar as the balance of the power structure goes. Until faith goes too far, and starts producing fanatics."
