Damon watched closely, as the girl's eyes travelled from the mother and son, back to him. He could see her distrust, and given her position, he couldn't blame her for it.
"They won't be harmed. I'll have her work in the kitchen, and when the boy is old enough, he'll join her," he said, telling her the truth. He always needed more house slaves, and when they behaved, they were treated appropriately.
"As for how you can trust me, you can't, other than to take my word for it. But are you really going to risk not taking the chance. You know as well as I do, that the chances of them staying together are slim."
