The room was blissfully quiet with just the two of them in it. He looked down at the vampire's hand and then up at the man's cutting grey eyes. "Then perhaps we should both be grateful that I was named for a bringer of such luck," he said, face pulling into a sort of half smile. This man clearly saw that there was more to him almost immediately. There was no need to hide how clever or cunning he could be, nor how deeply his knowledge ran.
"Though leaving to chance seems a big risk. There have been others sniffing around, and I'd hate to go home with one of those without sense enough to look up, Master." Hermes was pretty sure they both knew that he'd run circles around anyone else who dared to buy him. If he'd pulled the right kind of details out of that poor girl's head during her terrified rambling, well, Carrick at least would seem to enjoy the prospect of the hunt. Perhaps he might even end up more kestrel than canary by the end of it.
