"Hermes," he repeated softly. Yes, the vampire thought. Of course he was called Hermes. He gave the slave a keen look. "I'm not sure if that's fitting or sacriligeous."
He glanced to the side, at a slave whose fear at seeing him was palpable. It seemed he was building something of a reputation around this place. Carrick's pale, watchful eyes fixed on the trembling figure. "Calm yourself," he ordered. "I'm not interested in purchasing you. Carrick turned his attention back to Hermes.
"Either there's a talkative parrot in here as well as the singing canary, or you have gifts beyond the obvious" Carrick suggested, his eyes raking over Hermes' body. He turned to the guard at the side of the pen. "Take this one to a side room. I'd like to take a proper look at him."
Once they were inside one of the private rooms, Carrick walked around the slave in a slow circle, inspecting him from every angle. Finally he spoke.
