Alice hadn't though about the consequences of going outside during such a huge storm. She rarely thought about the consequences of anything she did, so committed was she to living in the moment. With her forgetfulness, sometimes it felt like the moment was all she had. She hadn't meant to displease her mistress, and again she had because she hadn't stopped to think.
Laura's next question surprised her somewhat. She hadn't thought she had a right to want anything out of their relationship, and so she was quiet for a moment longer as she thought about it.
"I want to make you smile," she eventually answered, assuming it was s stupid thing to say to such a deep question but wanting to be honest nonetheless. "I'm not always easy to be around, and beyond my singing, I don't have a lot that makes me worth the headache. So, if I can make you happy and make you smile some of the time, that's enough for me."
