Buffy's words were like knives to his chest but none hurt him as much as when she declared that she loved Ambrose. He had known it for a while but hearing it out loud was so much worse then he had thought it would be. What was left of his heart was cracking from the strain.
"Yes. I changed, Buffy. So drastically and so suddenly that I couldn't recognise myself in the mirror any more. I still can't. I just snapped one day and nothing was the same after that. I wasn't the same, I couldn't feel..." Lucius shook his head, determined that he wouldn't shed a tear despite feeling even more broken now then he had before.
He couldn't tell her why he couldn't face being Daniel or being associated with his memory. The things he had done... murder, human sacrifices, decimating the camp... Daniel would only defend himself or if he had to use offence, he'd knock them out as quickly as possible. It wasn't in him to kill unless absolutely necessary and he would never pick a fight... All that had stayed the same was how he felt about Buffy and she had chosen this Vampire over him.
