When the vampire judged there to have been enough distance put between him and his pursuer, he stopped and wheeled around. The sound of a howl nearby gave him pause. He could hear the distant sound of a river a mile or so away, but he suspected that the Alpha werewolf would be able to track him even over water. Nevertheless, it was a useful distraction. He sped towards the water then doubled back on himself, leaving a false trail.
After a few minutes run he made for the darkest patch of trees, where the forest was thickest, then glanced up at the leaf canopy. It was thick enough to hide him. Swinging himself easily up into a low branch he scaled the tree and couched on the thinnest limb he thought would bear his weight.
Let the werewolf follow him up here. With his heavier build he would snap the tree limb like a twig. Or if not, if he paused for long enough beneath the tree, Carrick could drop to the ground like the shadow he was and plunge his teeth into Russell's throat.
