"I don't care!" Buffy snapped back. She felt like he understood and didn't at the same time. He knew more about this world, and she knew that. Still, she had to be strong and unbreakable. The people that didn't want this lot in life needed her to be, and so she would be, no matter who tried.
"I don't care," she continued, "because whatever you believe or don't believe about this life? I was given a job to do, and I'm going to do. I'm not going to hide away, protected because I'm some kind of special, Chosen warrior of justice or something. I'm not the one who needs protecting! I'm supposed to be saving lives a-and returning people to their families. What good am I if I just train for years and years and end up dead in some raid anyway? At least now I can say I tried. If I save one person, if I help one person, it was worth it, and nothing you can say will change my mind. No horror stories, whether they're true or not, will change my mind."
