Derek didn't understand the expression on Alcuin's face. It was the opposite of the fear that he expected. Something closer to curiosity, but even more like awe. It was disconcerting. He had none of Scott's issues, had even less patience for them.
He cracked his neck as the bones began to shift under his skin, flexed his fingers in preparation for the claws that would pierce his skin. "Then you might want to prepare yourself," he rasped, and let the change take him over.
Though not embarrassed to shift in front of someone else, it was still disconcerting to be studied. Derek only went into the half-shift, the form that was both lupine and human and yet neither. Beneath his skin, bone and muscle shifted, while outwardly, teeth elongated, fingers became claws, ears became pointed, hair sprouted in some places while receding in others. If one looked, one could see the man beneath the wolf, but it was heavily masked.
