Anafiel had been among the most careful and exacting masters he had ever met and so Alcuin had worried more for his heart than for his body, but he had been too young at the time to fully understand what had happened to his previous household. Scott was different. He was young, younger than himself, and vulnerable in places that his previous masters were not – and if they were, they would never have shown it. Alcuin worried for him out of both fear and affection. “I have learned that what you do not know can hurt you – and there are many things I do not know, sir,” he confessed.
