Dear Lily:
I feel that I need to send my condolences. I know you and Sirius were friends, and rumor has it he and your husband were best friends. I know a loss like this can be hard. If there is anything I can do let me know, and I realize that an offer like this one is usually vain but as you know I have resources many do not. I will aid you in what ever way I can.
I should probably say nothing, and it is probably not appropriate to say but I am not always appropriate. I do not think that Miss Vance killed him. If you have any information or ideas about what is going on I would be interested in them. I had had a couple of lunches with him before his untimley death. I helped him get that offer at The Duke Ellington's orchestra. Well, I just helped him get on the fast track, but his prodigious talent would have gotten him that offer eventually in any case. I do have friends at the orchestra.
I just want to see justice for Sirius and railroading a little society girl who the masses will love to see convicted out of petty spite is not justice. I am sorry. All of this is quite off topic. My purpose is simply to express my condolences and offer my aid in whatever way I can. You were one of my favorites and you know that. I still care for you. Let me know if I can help you.
Sincerely,
Your friend,
Horace Slughorn.
