Their magic doesn't rely on the physical elements of their environment, but the metaphysical. They communicate with the dead. Friendly ghosts, poltergeists, one-legged pirates... they all show up from time to time. They are the only students who can actually have a conversation with someone from the world outside of Atlantis - although they still don't quite exist in the physical world. Talking to the dead isn't just for the pagans and goths among us. Variety is key. Not all spirits want to talk to kids with smoky eyes and black nail polish.
