The Rift has probably always existed in Cardiff, but it wasn't until the creation by Queen Victoria of the Torchwood Institute that anyone was able to monitor it. Ten years before the Institute was created, an attempt by an alien race called the Gelth to use the Rift to invade and take over the planet, was stopped by a gas explosion, which seems to have temporarily closed it.
Its slow reactivation came to the attention of the Institute, who constructed Torchwood Three as a monitoring station at some point between 1879 and 1883, although they had no way of controlling it until the manipulator was constructed in 1913.
Dateline Present Day: The Rift has been quiet and apart from a box that no one can remember anything about, life at Torchwood Three is relatively uneventful.
Unfortunately, it proves to be the calm before the storm. Just when everyone's thoughts begin to turn hopefully towards holidays, weddings, or just a little time to do nothing at all, activity around the Rift threatens to destroy all their plans and dump rather more on their doorstep than any of them could have anticipated.
Based on Torchwood canon up to the series 2 episode Adam but set in present day.
