Title: Cold Comfort
Author: yuuo
Word Count: 3909 (roughly)
Summary: Edward is always in motion.
Original LJ Post Date: Apr 28, 2006 @ Chaotic_Library
#1- Motion
Edward is always in motion, it seems, even now when his movements are slow and tired, weak and old; Envy notices it, sees how he fidgets, tapping his pencil or his finger as he sits there on the couch in front of the fire and studies in the familiar comfort of the homunculus' company, and Envy finds it fascinating, and a comforting sign that even despite how heavily this world weighs on him, the golden child's soul is still alive, still burning, and he almost thinks that if that glow can hold up so strong to the darkness, maybe there's a chance for him, as well.
#2- Cool
Envy's hands are cool to the touch, his body temperature slightly lower than that of a human's, and Edward shivers as the practiced fingers stroke his cock, thumb flicking across the head; Envy's lips and teeth claim his with a violent intensity and Edward trembles helplessly at the sensations.
#3- Young
Envy was never that young, he decides, as Edward storms about the sitting room of the drafty old castle, alternately raging and swearing incoherently in a mixture of English and German, and rambling excitedly as he complains about his day, about the prospective sponsers he and his roommate met with that day; he was never that young, that full of life, and true to his name, he's envious of the golden boy, that his life after death would be so much richer than his own was.
#4- Last
Envy is the last of a dying age, an era that most have already forgotten; Edward knows it, and struggles to keep him alive anyway, damn near clings to him, not out of respect for the world that Envy originally came from, but because Envy is the last tie he has to his own world, the last of his family.
#5- Wrong
Edward is certain that when the clergy say 'love thy brother', this is not what they meant; what this is is a perversion, a taboo, wrong, this coupling, this blasphemous union of sinner and sin, of brothers with brothers' blood on their hands, but he doesn't care, couldn't give a damn as he captures Envy's lips sharply, thrusting into the homunculus roughly, and Envy growls, scraping his fingernails up Edward's back; Edward shivers and revels in his sin.
#6- Gentle
It's funny- gentle isn't a word that Edward would ever think could apply to Envy or anything he did, but the damn near reverent way the sin's fingers are tracing the features of his face is just that, gentle and feather-light, and it sends a shiver down his spine as he closes his eyes and parts his lips for his mate as Envy leans down and kisses him hungrily.
#7- One
Envy is possessive to the point of being neurotic, and Edward is never sure if he's amused or exasperated or both by this quirk of his mate's; inevitably, during sex, Envy demands Edward to say it, to say he is the only one allowed to touch Edward like that, that he belongs to him, in every way possible, and Edward always humors him, and he could swear Envy practically purrs when he does.
#8- Thousand
A picture is worth a thousand words but not even that many could describe the full extent of the beauty of his golden-haired mate, nothing could compare to that, to the way he moved and talked, the look, and life and fire in his eyes, even as it smoldered down to hot-glowing coals from the raging inferno it had once been, the way he keeps Envy constantly on that heady edge of passion between love and hatred, keeping him alive while he is there, dead when he has gone for the day; nothing could ever fully describe that.
#9- King
This castle perhaps was once home to a king, and now it hides a dragon, sin incarnate, and the once-hallowed halls of royalty are defiled by its presence, defiled by the way that the sin mates with the sinner; it is fitting, in Envy's eyes, for the sinner, monstrously human though he is, is a king in his own right, a beautiful Christ child fucking the fallen Daystar and granting forgiveness to even him.
#10- Learn
Edward was beginning to learn the words Envy spoke between the lines, the things said in the silence, in his glares and his insults and his ruthless mocking; there's pain behind that, a pain that Edward is all-too familiar with, a pain he's nursed along with his loneliness and his desperate desire to be good enough, to be accepted and loved, and Edward is learning to give him what the sin has craved for so long.
#11- Blur
Somedays, Edward thinks the lines between them have blurred so much that there is little difference, no space separating himself from his prodigal older brother and mate; it's comforting, and finally begins to fill in the painful gap inside him that the loss of Alphonse had left.
#12 - Wait
"Wait!" Edward protests, struggles, but Envy ignores him, shoves him facefirst to the floor and pins him there, pressing his hips against the younger man; Envy hisses that it's too late, no waiting, that Edward will learn why it's dangerous to play with poison, and Envy figures that after this he will no longer have to wait in fear for the inevitable abandonment.
#13 - Change
The hum of alchemical energy and the tingling in his skin as Envy shifted, changed as he moved against him, inside him, made Edward open his eyes, and his breath caught in his throat as warm golden eyes stared back at him, gaze intense and hungry as the sin thrust into him; Edward shivered as his blood ran cold then hot, a flash of phantom pain ripping through his chest just as Envy hit just that spot and oh god his nerves tangled up on themselves and pulled him up and over that edge, until he couldn't see, couldn't think, just feel, exist there in that forbidden realm where the lines between brother and lover were blurred and erased.
#14 - Command
Edward normally holds the power between them, though Envy would never admit to so willingly let the blond command him, but Edward has surrendered this time, given Envy complete control over him, and Envy takes merciless advantage of it, his deft fingers and warm mouth leaving Edward begging for release, whimpering and trying to thrust his hips against the sin's weight; Envy grants the alchemist's request and enters him, groaning as Edward's muscles tighten around his hard cock in response.
#15 - Hold
Envy was far too big in this form to be held, but that didn't stop Edward from trying, curled up against Envy's serpentine neck, one arm flung up against his mate's cool scales in something that resembled an embrace.
#16 - Need
Edward's entire body ached with need and his cock twitched impatiently, caught between his own body and the soft rug as Envy pinned him to the floor, holding his arms down and biting his sensitive back; when he felt Envy's hard cock enter him forcefully, he shivered in mingled relief and arousal.
#17 - Vision
The world swam and melted together around him, a myriad of color and indistinct shapes, and the tight feel of Envy thrusting into him, of the sin's hands around his throat, became distant; the sin's smile as he leaned in to capture his lips was the last thing Edward saw before his vision went black.
#18 - Attention
Everything about the way Envy acted screamed 'pay attention to me, damnit!' and Edward couldn't help but oblige him, pushing away from his desk in his study as the sin, currently in the form of a sleek black cat, lept up onto his lap and curled up, lifting his head to silently demand the alchemist pamper him; Edward chuckled as he lightly scritched under the homunculus' chin and gave his little brother a helpless look, and the younger Elric only shook his head at him with a grin as if to say 'don't look at me, I didn't bring that stray in.'
#19 - Soul
Envy lost his soul more than three centuries ago, and time had helped him to learn to live without it, but the day Edward first came to that acient castle where he'd hidden himself from a world that scorned his very existance more than even his own world had done, Envy thought that somehow, his soul had reincarnated in his younger brother, and had come home to him.
#20 - Picture
Alphonse watches unseen from around the corner as Envy stares quietly at the small collection of pictures that Alphonse managed to abscond with from the Rockbells- they're pictures of his family, of Mom and Brother and himself, and one lone one of the three of them and Hohenheim- he remains quiet, fearful of intruding upon something that does not belong to him as Edward steps up behind his mate and wraps his arms around the sin, bites his neck lightly, and says silently that there's not a single picture in existance where his family is complete.
#21 - Fool
Envy is as good at self-delusion as he is at tricking others into believing the illusions he creates, and though now too tired, too haunted by the familiar shadow of his own death to delude himself into thinking he does not crave the very things that were denied to him when that old bastard left (a family, something of my own, what that brat stole, what he's offering freely, what he's giving now), he is able to delude himself into believing that here, tangled up in their loveplay battle, that it is him that Edward wants, and only him, this brother, lover though he is as well, and not the youngest one; he fools himself into believing that the family is finally his, even though he knows it's always been Alphonse's.
#22 - Mad
It was difficult to make Alphonse angry, even Envy knew that, even though he paid little attention to the younger brother over the years; it is difficult, but Envy has managed to make him angry when Edward finally retrieves him from that abandoned castle in Munich and he tries to leave in a fit of ... of whatever petty spite (fear) it is that sends him hiding from the very thing he's wanted for years, and Envy quickly realizes, as Alphonse pins him and chastizes him for trying to abandon the middle child, the precious brother and mate, why it is that Edward had warned him to never mess with his little brother.
#23 - Child
When Envy killed him, Edward in many ways had still been a child, the traces of the maturity of adulthood only starting to show in his eyes, but when he shows up at that drafty old castle, he is ancient, perhaps as ancient as Envy himself, perhaps, somehow, even older, and it shows, in the way Envy's harsh words and attacks don't seem to bother him, in the way he patiently wears Envy's violent reaction to the reappearance of the younger son of Hohenheim down until even Envy surrenders, too damn old and tired to fight anymore; Edward is somehow older than even him when he holds out an injured hand to Envy after the sin stops attacking and offers a family.
#24 - Now
There's only the now, this moment, when they're wrapped up in each other, Envy's hands possessively around Edward's throat as the younger boy thrusts up into the sin; there's nothing outside or beyond, no time or space or existance besides right then as Envy growls furiously, rocking his hips, hands just this side of too tight, and Edward's hand tightens on Envy's cock, tightening and stroking almost erratically- there's nothing beyond this moment when the two are one.
#25 - Shadow
Envy is a shadow in his mind, the evil that is left in the absence of light, and Edward is the rebirth of the light that was lost when Envy had died the first time; he had never heard of light that embraced the shadows, tangling and coiling with him the way the light from the fire made their shadows dance and jump against the wall as they made furious love on the heated stone floor.
#26 - Goodbye
Edward had stopped visiting abruptly, without warning, and as he curled up tightly in the back corner of the cold chapel in the castle's innermost wing, Envy knew that Edward had gone home, without even saying goodbye to his dying brother and mate.
#27 - Hide
Envy's content to hide from the outside world, his reappearance in Amestris and his presence in the Elric household unknown to the few family friends that occasionally visited; he has the last few tattered remains of the family he'd been denied for years, a little brother and a mate, and that is all he gives a damn about.
#28 - Fortune
For as cruel as fate had been to himself and both of his brothers, Alphonse can't help but think he's the luckiest boy in existance as he watches his two older brothers argue, engaged in a verbal sort of loveplay; he's the luckiest boy in the world with the best two older brothers, even if they had a particularly strange way of showing their affections.
#29 - Safe
It is the only time that Envy demands control, and forces Edward to do something he pointedly doesn't want to do, when he pulls the alchemist down to the floor with him, forcing Edward to straddle him, holds the false hand to his shoulder and presses his own hand to the alchemist's chest in a mimickry of Edward's death at the sin's hand; Edward must learn that he is safe here.
#30 - Ghost
Sometimes, Envy can see his father's ghost in Edward, when the alchemist looks into the fire in the evening, flexing his automail hand as if it somehow hurts, and it unnerves him, and other times, Edward is his own ghost, a boy long dead brought back to life- correctly, this time- and Envy lashes out in fear of it, grabs Edward roughly and practically drags the boy out of his chair and into his lap, kissing him to draw blood from his lips; neither notices when Alphonse makes a loud protest of disgust then leaves the rooms, leaving the two elder brothers to their foreplay.
#31 - Book
"No," Edward growls stubbornly, not looking over the edge of his book, huddled back in his seat tightly, pointedly even, and Envy hisses childishly and tries to grab Edward's hair to pull his gaze up to his and demand again that Edward cater to his whims; Edward whaps his hand with the book before he can and tells him to harrass Alphonse for awhile, he'll let Envy indulge his insatiable appetite for his mate later, goddamnit.
#32 - Eye
Edward can't bring himself to look Envy in the eye when it accidentally slips what had sent him to first find the sin back in Munich, now years ago; the second loss of their father, the panicked running from an enamored roommate who things had gone too far with for Edward's comfort, given the eerie resemblence between said roommate and Edward's younger brother back home, and all Envy can think is that it's ironic, that Edward ran from the arms of one brother's shadow to the arms of the other's.
#33 - Never
Both Envy and Edward took after their father, far more than either ever cared for, much less would admit to, but one way that Edward was different, was that Envy had never seen Edward break a promise or abandon a loved one; even despite that, it was difficult after three hundred years of self-conditioning to completely trust that.
#34 - Sing
Envy had never been sung to as a child, by either parent- both had awful voices, and only one had any interest in being a parent anyway- so he couldn't fully understand why music was constantly played in the background in his new home with his brothers; their mother had been in love with music, and they'd grown up with it so much a part of their life they couldn't imagine having a house of their own without music in it.
#35 - Sudden
Everything with Envy was sudden, his interruption of the companionable silence the younger brothers shared in the evening, his form changing, his rare moments where the walls were down were there and gone almost before either brother could see them; even in sex, Envy was always abrupt, instigating foreplay without warning, deciding as he licked the sensitive underside of Edward's cock that he was too impatient to continue that and would straighten and enter the alchemist forcefully, driving him up against the wall, regardless of what Edward might have to say about it.
#36 - Stop
"Why'd you stop?" Envy grumbles, but Edward doesn't answer, staring horrified out the window just past Envy's shoulder, and a quick turn of investigation shows that Hawkeye has dropped by for an unexpected visit of the Elric brothers and has seen more than she probably wanted.
#37 - Time
"Hurry up, it's almost time," Edward orders and Envy protests; Edward snaps "you're going, get over it, Al'd want both... both of his brothers there," and his voice wavers and trails off as he finishes, turning away to continue fighting with the tie of his black suit.
#38 - Wash
It's like rebirth, like being made clean with Baptismal water, like being burned to rise from ashes like the pheonix of old legends, as Edward takes the sin, his words and actions a blasphemous paradox of gentle and rough, curses falling from lips as teeth bruise and cut pale skin on Envy's neck and shoulders.
#39 - Torn
Envy opens his eyes at the abrupt sound of paper tearing, looks over at Edward to find the blond ripping apart notes and flinging them into the fire; his eyes are lost and frustrated, angry and pained as he hits the mantle with his false limb's fist before storming back to the couch and flopping down sullenly, and Envy wonders how many months of research towards getting home Edward has just burned.
#40 - History
History had a habit of repeating itself, that much Envy knew- after all, he'd lived to see three centuries of it, and it was all the same, with just new faces and names attached to the stories that would be passed down, but somehow, he'd forgotten it, since being given a new home, had figured somehow, for some reason, that he wouldn't be left behind this time, and he should've known better; both of the brothers were still human, still very much mortal, and he, no matter how much he looked it, was not human at all.
#41 - Power
Envy remembers the prayer he once learned when he was still alive, still a young child- Dante had a fascination with religion and the mystical besides her interest in the far more logical science of alchemy, and some part of him is amused that it comes to mind whenever Edward has him pinned beneath him; he bites Edward's jaw before rolling his head back, breath hitching as Edward's cock teased that spot and the friction of their bodies rubs and heats his own aching cock, and he thinks for thine is the power, and the amen is whispered aloud as he comes with a violent shudder.
#42 - Bother
Alphonse normally knows better than to bother his two older brothers when they're anywhere together unsupervised- god only knows what they're doing, after all, and as much as he'll pick on Edward for it, he really doesn't want to be subjected to seeing his brothers snog each other senseless, but Edward's supposed to be doing dishes, and last he saw, Envy was asleep in cat form on top of the icebox, so it couldn't possibly be that bad; unfortunately for him, it is, as Envy's interrupted Edward's chores (he's sure Edward protests an excuse to leave housework for someone else) and has the alchemist pinned against the wall, hand tangled in his hair and lips and teeth violently claiming Edward's mouth, and Alphonse decides they're both hopeless.
#43 - God
Envy has seen God, or what passes for one, that hellish Gate that he was forcibly ripped from centuries ago, and he knows that God is cold, emotionless, like ice; Edward is golden, a sun that burned all those that got too near, and Envy believes that his fiery young mate is above god, better than a god, and he belongs to him; only he is allowed to touch God like that and live.
#44 - Wall
The wall, Edward mused with some measure of humor past the hazy fog over his thoughts that was induced by Envy's teeth and fingers and oh god that mouth, was Envy's favorite place to take the alchemist, when he managed to wrestle the top from him, and Edward really doesn't mind, tangling his fingers in Envy's hair as the sin's mouth and tongue tease the head of his cock, his hips thrusting in response to the stimulation.
#45 - Naked
There is nothing so beautiful as Edward naked, except perhaps Edward naked and pinned beneath Envy, face and neck flushed and breath nothing but ragged gasps and whispered curses and Envy's name a mantra as the sin takes him, owns him, possesses him, the bedsprings beginning to creak and whine from so much abuse.
#46 - Drive
Edward's driving skills are deplorable, Alphonse thinks, and it really doesn't help matters that Envy is sitting in the backseat, leaning forward to lightly slide his fingers up the back of Edward's neck, almost completely distracting him from the road; Alphonse's poor brother is bright red and occasionally smacking back at Envy's hand, but the sin just smirks and grabs his hair tightly, and finally Alphonse can't take it and he reaches back and smacks Envy's arm, snapping at him to knock it off before he makes Brother drive off the road and get them all killed.
#47 - Harm
The term 'harm' was subjective when it came to Envy and Edward, and what most would term too violent to be anything but displays of hatred was in fact a sort of affection between them; the bites and scratches and bruises were simply a part of things for them, the inflicting and recieving of the injuries enjoyed by both parties almost as much as the actual sex, and after it was done, Envy would lick the blood from the marks on Edward's body like a wolf licking its mate's wounds.
#48 - Precious
There is precious little that can make Edward smile for even a second, there in Munich- even Envy rarely sees the expression on his mate's face, but there's always a brief second, before Edward opens the door to the castle where Envy is hiding, when he smiles, just a little.
#49 - Hunger
Edward hungers for him, aches to taste him, touch him, fuck him, and Envy isn't complaining as Edward shoves him facefirst onto the bed, grabs his hair tightly and bites down on his shoulder; Envy growls and pushes his hips back up against Edward impatiently and Edward gladly indulges the sin, entering him as he pins Envy's arms to the bed.
#50 - Believe
Edward didn't believe in miracles, he believed in his own strength, his own capabilities, and the abilities of those who supported him, and it was by his own strength that he would put his family back together; he'd get himself and his mate and older brother home to the youngest.
