Title: It Falls On Me
Author: yuuo
Word Count: ~2951
Summary: When Edward kissed her, it was like life came back.
01 - Air
When Edward kissed her, it was like life came back, and Riza realized she'd been drowning in the military so long, she'd forgotten how to breathe.
02 - Apples
While Riza was normally not more than mediocre in the kitchen, she made sure she got all of Trisha's recipes for apple desserts that Edward liked from Pinako and treated him as often as she could.
03 - Beginning
Marrying Edward was the beginning of a new life for her, one away from the secrets and lies of the military she left behind.
04 - Bugs
Riza spent months wondering why Edward acted so nervous around bugs, until he told her that Winry had dumped a box of them on his head as a child; what he didn't say, according to Winry, that the box had been collected by Edward to scare her with, she'd just thwarted the prank and paid it back with interest.
05 - Coffee
Edward was a coffee drinker while Riza preferred tea, but once they started dating, she made sure there was always coffee in her house for him.
06 - Dark
The military life was cold and dark, but when Edward came into her life, the sun appeared from behind the clouds and she never wanted to return to her old world.
07 - Despair
Riza had fallen into a deep depression when she'd failed to protect Roy and he'd paid for it; Edward was her only source of comfort in her grieving.
08 - Doors
He always held the doors for her, even though she was more than capable of doing it herself, often did for Roy, but he insisted that she deserved to be the one treated with such respect.
09 - Drink
Edward had gotten a taste for drinking too much whiskey over in Germany, a bad habit he still occasionally indulged in, and Riza always scolded him for it, then took care of him when the hangover hit.
10 - Duty
Their biggest argument was over Riza's duty to the military and to Roy; to Riza, it was as necessary to who she was as being Edward's wife was, but to Edward, it was an excuse to stay in a uniform that had sucked the life from her for so many years, held like a security blanket, because she simply didn't know what else to do with herself.
11 - Earth
Edward often flew out towards the sun on wings of wax with his crazy ideas; Riza's steadfast loyalty and lack of fear of saying something about his lack of planning, would always pull him back down to Earth.
12 - End
Edward had all but begged her to turn in her commission; she'd resisted until Roy himself retired and told her in an unusal bluntness for him to end her time in the military and have a safer life with her husband.
13 - Fall
She was afraid of how fast she was falling for Edward, but he always showed her she was safe with him so she could let herself free fall.
14 - Fire
Roy was fire, a spark away from an inferno that'd burn away everything, but she found that Edward was his own sort of fire, as intense as the sun itself, his passions surpassing even Roy's.
15 - Flexible
Years of physical exercise and calisthenics had left them both with an amazing flexibility, which led to all sorts of fun games in the bedroom.
16 - Flying
His smile and kisses could reverse her sense of gravity, leaving her falling straight for the sun.
17 - Food
Riza wasn't a terribly picky eater, and Edward would usually eat whatever you set in front of him, even if it'd given him food poisoning once already; fortunately for their wedding guests, Breda was a gourmet and provided all the catering for their reception.
18 - Foot
Edward frequently had foot in mouth disease, enough that Riza had learned to take his words in stride, letting him bumble around until he'd spit out an apology that was as badly worded as whatever he was apologizing for had been, but bless him, he tried.
19 - Grave
They lived in East City where Edward worked, but they'd vacation to Rizenbul to visit Al and Winry, and even though she was never outright invited, she always accompanied him to visit his mother's grave, and always stood back, giving him his privacy while offering a comforting shoulder should he need it.
20 - Green
She'd been a greenhorn in the military when his mother had died when he was a child; sometimes that age span upset her, but he'd reassure her that he didn't care, he loved her and she loved him, and ultimately, that was all that mattered.
21 - Head
The knowledge of the world was locked in his head, and sometimes when he was drinking, he'd babble out something that would confuse Riza, would confuse even his brother, but sometimes, he'd say something less convolutedly scientific, and say something about the world that made him sound old and far wiser than her.
22 - Hollow
The uniform had left all of them hollow inside, particularly Riza, who'd never been social enough to counter the effects of the secrets and lies, then Edward came along and filled in that emptiness.
23 - Honor
As the honor guards fired their shots and offered a folded flag to her, she struggled to keep from crying, blaming herself for failing to protect him; after the funeral, she offered the flag to his brother, who shook his head and told her that was hers, but their grief was shared.
24 - Hope
Roy had retired years before, and left Riza floundering for something to do with her life, so she stayed in the military out of inertia; when Edward proposed, for once, her future looked bright enough to leave the military and move on from a life devoid of hope.
25 - Light
He was her light in the dark, honest where her life was filled with lies, and she basked in his warmth, chasing away the cold and giving her a reason to get through her job, knowing that she'd return home to him when the day was over.
26 - Lost
She let Edward drive them once, and he got them hopelessly lost, sheepishly admitting that while he could find any place on foot, his sense of direction died a painful death on fire when he got behind the wheel of a car.
27 - Metal
Edward was worried at first that she'd be disgusted or upset about his scars and automail limbs, that they'd prove too cold, too heavy, or that the surgery scars would turn her off, but she smiled, assured him she loved all of him, and reverently kissed the scars where flesh met metal.
28 - New
Roy had paid for her wedding dress, insisting on giving her the best, a brand new white dress, but still informal enough to be reworn, something that pleased her practical side, and Edward had complimented Roy on his taste, then told Riza she was beautiful, which pleased her more emotional side just as much.
29 - Old
"Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue," was the saying, and for her 'something old', Edward gave her his mother's wedding ring that he'd kept before burning his home to the ground.
30 - Peace
Once Parliament took over, peace reigned over the land, so Roy and Riza neither one felt much guilt when they left the military to move on with life, and Riza found even more peace and comfort in the arms of Edward, and of course, Roy gave her grief for choosing the Fullmetal Shorty for a boyfriend; Riza threatened to shoot him before Edward could threaten to punch him.
31 - Poison
Old fears and terrors had poisoned both their lives, leaving them sick and withered; together, they managed to be a panacea to each other, breathing life back in where there'd been death before.
32 - Pretty
She flushed when he told her she was pretty; he was still seventeen, far too young for her, and despite that, she felt herself admiring his open honesty and compliments, so she simply said thank you and privately wondered what things could be like if he were older and maybe she were younger.
33 - Rain
Riza feared the rain, too many years of knowing how helpless Roy would ultimately be in it, leaving it to her to protect him all the more; she discovered that Edward was just as afraid of the rain and thunder, because it always seemed to rain when bad things happened in his life.
34 - Regret
Edward asked her once, one night as they curled up against each other in bed, if she ever regretted leaving the military and Mustang behind; she thought about that for a moment, then shook her head, telling him that she sometimes thought she should, but she couldn't quite bring herself to.
35 - Roses
Riza's favorite flowers were really a tiny white violet that couldn't be cultivated and were too small for proper bouquets, but she liked other white flowers, as well, so Edward made sure to send white roses to her office for her birthday; even though he'd sent the flowers anonymously, she knew immediately they were from him, and let herself have one of her smiles her coworkers rarely got to see.
36 - Secret
Edward complained somewhat regularly about Roy, most of which was about his short jokes, which never bothered Riza (Roy was childish in those cases, after all), but when Edward complained about his ambition being equally childish, Riza put her foot down on the issue, telling Edward the secret between Roy and herself as to why Roy was that way.
37 - Snakes
Usually when Riza came over to the Elric/Rockbell home, it was Al or Pinako that did the cooking, but Edward cooked that night, and refused to tell any of them what he'd cooked; Riza thought it tasted like chicken, but flaked like fish, but was definitely interesting, although she wasn't sure how she felt when she found out it was rattlesnake meat.
38 - Snow
It never snowed out in East City, the city having the wrong climate for it, but Central saw plenty of it, and even as an adult, Edward would go out and play, convincing his brother and sometimes Riza to come out and build a snowman with him.
39 - Solid
After the dishonorable discharges scattered she and her friends to the four winds, Riza felt like she was trying to rebuild her life on sandy shores; Edward came along and became her solid ground to build on.
40 - Spring
Spring was beautiful in Rizenbul, with the trees blooming pink and green, and Edward looked forward to visiting his hometown every year; this year, he had a special occasion to go home for: his marriage to Riza.
41 - Stable
Her relationship with Roy had always been something of a powder keg, steady, but ready to go up at the first real spark; her relationship with Edward was something altogether different, stable and strong.
42 - Strange
Despite the age and past between them, it never felt strange when he kissed her, the years and grief evaporating with his touch, with the electricity that shot down her spine, giving her goosebumps.
43 - Summer
Summer meant high temperatures and trips to the lake for a good cookout and swimming; Edward always liked the trips, despite the fact that his automail meant he couldn't swim, but Riza could, and did, in a little two piece suit that showed off more skin than he saw outside of the bedroom, and he enjoyed the chance to appreciate her.
44 - Taboo
When Edward first asked her out and she'd hesitated, he assumed it was because she was already involved and in love with Roy, but she assured him that was not the case, there was only friendship between them, and even if there ever had been anything, a relationship would be a taboo and quite likely get them drummed from the service.
45 - Ugly
She never thought of herself as being particularly pretty, not necessarily ugly, just rather average, but Edward made her feel like a beautiful woman of much younger years than her own.
46 - War
The call to war went out while Riza was still in uniform, and she was deployed down South, ripped away from her husband; Edward, and his brother, who wouldn't let him get into trouble alone, decided to tell the state to fuck off and followed her.
47 - Water
Edward was simply going through too much coffee, that high amount of caffeine was making him jittery, so Riza restricted his intake, making him drink water as an all-day drink rather than the three pots of coffee a day he'd been drinking.
48 - Welcome
Her grandfather had said that she'd cut everyone out of her life from the old days, too much hurt and too much darkness, so when Edward arrived to her doorstep with a bouquet of white carnations in hand, he worried he wouldn't be welcome even long enough to give them to her.
49 - Winter
Winter was the rainy season in the East, and rain depressed him and made her neurotic, it took all their love to keep fights from happening, her scolding him to stop wallowing in misery and him to snap at her for her frayed nerves.
50 - Wood
She had a little-known talent for wood working, never making a big deal about it until he caught her making a bird feeder to hang outside their window and attract the morning birds; once it was made, she'd catch Edward intently watching the birds eat, and decided that making it had been a good idea.
