Summary: His roommate was becoming increasingly concerned about him.
The rumors flew,
But nobody knew how much he blamed himself.
-"Whiskey Lullaby"; Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss
His roommate was becoming increasingly concerned about him. He squandered away their meager savings on bottles of whiskey, diving down into the bottom of them until he passed out at night, sleeping at his desk more often than in his bed.
Edward didn't particularly care what Alfons thought of his habits.
During the day, he stayed the good scientist, working faithfully on the rocket fuel formula while the others constructed that monstrosity that would get them the attention of the Thule Society, hopefully. His ticket home.
But in the meantime, Edward was so painfully lonely for his brother's company. He was desperate just to talk to the other Elric boy, never mind to see that beautiful smile, feel those warm hands, strong arms as he hugged him and never let go again.
Edward stared at the glass of whiskey in his hand for a second before knocking back a swallow, an old pro at it by this time, not even wincing at the woodsmoke burn of it as it slid down his throat. "Hey, Al," he whispered.
There was no answer, so he knocked back another swallow, finishing off the glass, and poured himself another. After his second glass, there was a response.
"Hey, Brother. What took you so long?"
"I've always been perpetually late," he answered, taking another drink.
"It's no wonder Teacher kicked your ass so much," his brother scolded.
Edward smiled, sliding the glass back and forth on the desk in front of him as he listened to the voice that came from nowhere. "Always sleeping in and late to lessons, while you were always the goody two-shoes."
"I am not a goody two-shoes! Take that back!"
Edward laughed, didn't particularly care if his roommate heard, and downed another drink. "Or what? You'll come kick my ass? Please, do." He looked forlornly down into the bottle as he poured another glass. "It'd mean I didn't have to keep searching for the way home, because all I really care about is having you back."
"We'll find each other, Brother," Al's angelic voice assured him, and Edward could just picture that smile, so sweet and reassuring and promising that everything would be okay again. A broken sob escaped him and he rested his head on his arm on the desk, fighting back tears. He was a moody drunk, with hallucinations of his brother's voice, but better than a mean drunk.
"I miss you, Al," he whispered, or at least, he thought he did. He might've just passed out. He couldn't be sure until he woke up the next day, an empty glass in one hand and a mostly empty bottle in the other. His head was pounding and his mouth felt like cotton, and his stomach threatened to upset itself.
But it was worth it, for one more chance to speak to Al.
