Title: Remember
Author: yuuo
Word Count: 484
Summary: It was their anniversary.
Remember when we vowed the vows,
And walked the walk,
Gave our hearts, made the start, it was hard.
We lived and learned, life threw curves,
There was joy, there was hurt.
Remember when.
-Alan Jackson
It was their anniversary.
Gracia put Elysia to bed early that evening, in the probaby vain hope for some privacy this year. The last few years they hadn't been so lucky, with a fussy toddler not wanting to go to bed early. This year, Elysia seemed a bit more cooperative; having been woken up early in preparation for this evening may have had something to do with that.
The evening dinner was quick to cook, thankfully, easy to prepare. Nothing to terribly fancy; Maes didn't want her stressing herself on their day like that. The table was set while dinner cooked on the stove; Gracia got out the nice candlesticks and lit the candles, turning the lights down.
There. Lovely and romantic.
She served dinner as soon as it was done. It steamed on her plate invitingly as she sat down, looking across the table at the picture she set up next to Maes's empty plate.
A picture was no substitute for the man.
Gracia sat like that for several seconds before she shoved her plate away and laid her head down on the table and cried. "It's not right without you, Maes," she sobbed, hushing her voice so not to wake Elysia. "I can't do it, I can't celebrate without you."
Maes's picture smiled back at her. Yes, you can, it seemed to say. Remember the good times.
Gracia chewed her lip, sitting up and pulling her plate back to her, trying to focus on those good times instead of the fact that he wasn't there. She remembered last year, when Elysia cried until Maes finally got up and got her out of bed, sitting her on his lap while he ate. Elysia had gotten mashed potatos on Maes's face, she remembered.
She fought back a giggle at the memory of her husband with mashed potatos all over his face with a little toddler happily making a mess on his plate with his spoon.
She remembered the first time Elysia walked. Maes had been so crestfallen when it was Gracia that Elysia first walked towards instead of him. The look on his face had been priceless.
By the time she was done flipping through memories, she was almost in hysterics with laughter. "Oh, we had some good times, didn't we, Maes?" she asked the picture.
The picture smiled at her.
She smiled back, picking at her food. "All right, Maes, you win. I'll eat. But don't think this means I don't still miss you," she told him sternly as she sat forward, starting to eat.
When she was finished, she pushed back from the table, grabbing her dishes to go wash them. She hesitated, then stepped around the table, leaning over and kissing the picture. "Go on ahead of me, darling," she told him quietly, "I'll be along when my chores are done."
Maes continued to smile at her.
