Tears of Molten Wax
"I brought you some tea."
Winry looked up at Sheska's voice, focusing her eyes first on the teacup in her hand before finding the nerve to let her gaze continue to her face. Sheska's eyes were wet, and those owlishly round glasses she wore were smudged with pale white spots left behind by dried salt.
"I made it with peppermint, the way you like it." Her voice was tentative, unable to hide the quiver underneath as she offered a shaky smile.
There were still tears left, and Winry tried to choke them back as she reached for the teacup. "Thank you." She sipped it slowly, wincing a bit at the liquid's heat, and looked back up at her. "It's good. Sit down? Please?" Winry turned her head away quickly and shut her eyes, biting her lip in an effort to stop the tears. She hated the way her voice cracked.
Winry heard the footsteps, the creaking of the wood as Sheska lowered herself to the deck floor. The feel of her friend's hand, rubbing her back in slow, soothing motions, was welcome.
"They'll find him. He's okay. Al is there, and Missus Curtis said he was back as he was and Ed has to be around somewhere," Sheska said. "He probably ran off to do something else and he'll come back and everything will be--"
"Stop it!" Winry glared at her, choking back a sob. "Just stop it! Nothing will be the same again! Nothing will ever be the same again! Even if they find him, even if he comes back, they're never coming back." Sheska's face blurred in her vision.
"But they are coming back. Missus Curtis said she was bringing--"
"Stop it." All she could manage was a pathetic little whimper, staring down into the teacup. "It won't be to stay."
Sheska lay her head on Winry's shoulder, rubbing her back. "What is it?" she asked after a long silence. "That isn't what really has you upset."
Winry bit back a moan, sniffling. "I..." Her voice cracked and she looked up at the sky, at the clouds, at the sun, trying to bring herself under control.
The sun.
A quiet keening sound escaped from her throat when something deep inside her chest erupted again, raw and tearing apart. Sheska took the cup from her and Winry found herself in a tight hug.
"I'm afraid they won't find him," Winry whispered in Sheska's ear, clinging to her, balling her hands into fists around her top. "I think he flew too close to the sun. That stupid idiot. Why did he..." Speech escaped her then, with the last syllable dissolving into a pained scream, quiet from the lack of strength behind it. Sheska held her tighter, petting back Winry's hair as the last barrier against the tears broke. She felt Sheska's lips brush her wet cheek, once, before resting her head against hers.
Winry was not about to release her friend anytime soon. At the moment, it felt like Sheska was the only thing between her and drowning in her worst, and most secret fear.
